一缘 (Ekagrata, "心注一處" — mind abiding on one place) names a very specific state: 心识持续系属于唯一一个所缘的稳定状态. The classical source — 《涅般道大手印瑜伽法要釋》, a treatise from the Tibetan Mahāmudrā tradition — translates the Sanskrit directly as "心注一處", and unpacks it as *deep, continuous concentration of consciousness upon one object or one thought*. The动词 at its heart is 专系: not "gazing at," not "thinking about," not "merging with," but binding. The mind, like a thread held taut, is kept tied to a single object/thought and is not allowed to wander away.
This is the first thing to fix firmly: 一缘 is a *relational* state, not a *content* state. It is defined by the relationship between three structural elements, not by what the content of mind happens to be. Those three elements are:
1. 能知 (the cognizing subject) — the "knower" side, the mind that knows. 2. 所缘 (the object-of-focus, *ālambana*) — the "known" side, the specific thing held. 3. 一心紧系 (single-minded binding) — the continuous activity that ties the first to the second.
一缘 is precisely the *state in which these three are functioning correctly together*. Without 能知, there is no binding; without 所缘, there is nothing to bind to; without 一心紧系, the other two drift apart. The classical text is unusually insistent on this triad: when it gives the practical instruction, it names each element separately and gives each one its own job.
What the 所缘 can be
The text is explicit: A small ball or a piece of wood placed in front of the practitioner is given as the standard external support — something simple, present, low in narrative content. But 一缘 is not, by its definition, restricted to physical objects. A single internal念 (a phrase, an image, a question held in mind) can equally serve as 所缘.
This is why classical 一缘 is not the same as "external gaze concentration" (盯), nor the same as "internal mantra concentration" (念). It is the structure of binding itself that is named, not any particular object. Whether the object is on the tip of the nose or at the back of the mind, the practice is the same.
Three things 一缘 is *not*
This is the most easily missed part of the classical teaching, and where most contemporary readings go wrong. The text gives three negative instructions that define the practice by what it refuses to do:
The cognizing mind is not allowed to drift from its object. This sounds obvious, but it already rules out a popular misconception — that 一缘 means "letting the mind go wherever it wants." It doesn't. 一缘 is a *disciplined* state of binding; drift is the very thing being prevented.
The mind is *not* asked to perform a second-level mental operation affirming "I and this object have become one." This is a particularly subtle instruction. Many contemplative traditions (and many contemporary "nondual" framings) describe absorption as a merger of subject and object. The Mahāmudrā source text here explicitly *refuses* that framing. 一缘 does not require, and does not involve, the erasure of the knower-known distinction. 能知 remains 能知, 所缘 remains 所缘 — what changes is that the binding between them is unbroken.
Thoughts (念) are not forced to stop, not chased, not suppressed. They are "placed beyond concern," allowed to run their own course. This is the third negative. It rules out the two most common failure modes: - *Following* thoughts (engaging with each one as it appears, which is the default mode of distracted mind), and - *Suppressing* thoughts (forcing the mind blank, which produces strain and eventual rebound).
The text illustrates this with the metaphor of the shepherd letting the sheep graze The shepherd doesn't drag the sheep. The shepherd doesn't panic when the sheep wander. The shepherd stays with them — present, watchful, not chasing, not forcing. 一缘 works the same way: the mind continues to dwell in its single focus while thoughts (the sheep) move about at the periphery, unfollowed and unsuppressed.
This is why 一缘 in this text is *not* equivalent to "having no thoughts." The classical text directly says so: 念 gradually ceases on its own once the practice is stable; one does not force it. 一缘 is the *cause* of quieting, not the *result* of forcibly clearing the mind.
Where 一缘 sits in the path
A concept's meaning is half-shaped by its neighbors. Three neighbors of 一缘 in this text need to be named precisely.
In the treatise, 一缘 is listed alongside 端直其身 (straightening the body) and 坐金刚座 (sitting on the vajra seat) as the three components of "为大手印" — the full Mahāmudrā practice. The text does not present 一缘 as a stand-alone technique. It is the *mental* component of a structured whole. To practice 一缘 without the bodily posture is to practice half a method; to practice the posture without 一缘 is to practice the other half. This matters for contemporary readers because most "mindfulness" and "focus" offerings treat concentration as a freestanding skill, separable from bodily and ethical context. The classical framing refuses that separation.
After "已守一缘" (one-pointedness has been stably maintained), the practitioner goes on to observe 动 (movement) and 静 (stillness) as "不异不离" (neither identical with, nor separate from, each other). When this observing 慧 (discerning wisdom) is confirmed in the practitioner's experience, it is named 妙观察智 (wonderful observing wisdom), also called 出世之智 (world-transcending wisdom).
Crucially: the text explicitly says 一缘 is *not* the same as 妙观察智. They are sequential stages. 一缘 is the work of *gathering mind into stability* (摄念住定之事). 妙观察智 is the work of *discerning the nature of movement and stillness once stability is present* (观照动静之智). A practitioner can sit in stable 一缘 for decades and never arrive at 妙观察智 — the latter requires the further step of observing动 and 静 together. Confusing the two is one of the most common errors in how this concept is received today, where "I sat in concentration" is sometimes taken to mean "I have realized wisdom."
一缘 has no meaning apart from 能知 and 所缘. It is literally the binding-relation between them. Any reading of 一缘 that drops one of these three is reading a different concept.
A note on classical expressions
Although 《涅般道大手印瑜伽法要釋》 is the source text given here, the broader concept of 一缘 / Ekagrata / "心注一处" has famous resonances elsewhere in the canon that contemporary readers often recognize:
- 《大势至菩萨念佛圆通章》 speaks of "都摄六根,净念相继,得三摩地,斯为第一" — "gathering the six sense-faculties into one, with pure mindfulness continuous, attaining samādhi — this is foremost." This "gathering the six" is structurally the same operation as 一缘: pulling the multiple streams of sense-contact into a single binding. - 《阿弥陀经》 speaks of "一心不乱" — "one-mind, not disturbed" — over one to seven days of Amitābha-recitation. This 不乱 is the 一心紧系 of Ekagrata applied to nianfo.
These are not the same teaching as the Mahāmudrā text, but they show that "binding the mind to one place" is recognized across traditions as a foundational operation of Buddhist practice. The Mahāmudrā source simply makes the structure unusually explicit.
Let me walk the concept through some contemporary scenes — slowly, the way the classical text would have us walk through any single moment. Each scene has a 能知, a 所缘, a 一心紧系, and the ever-present question of whether the practitioner is following, suppressing, or simply binding.
