In Buddhist cosmology, **"Four Continents" (四天下, *catur-dvīpa*)** refers to the four major landmasses situated in the ocean surrounding Mount Sumeru (须弥山). At a basic physical and cosmological level, it constitutes the foundational geographical unit of a solar-system-like world:

1. Uttarakuru in the North Pūrvavideha in the East Jambudvīpa in the South Aparagodānīya in the West

However, in the Buddhist path to liberation (*vimukti-mārga*, 解脱道), "Four Continents" is never merely an ancient geographical map or a primitive speculative astronomy. Rather, it represents a multidimensional existential and spiritual matrix—a fundamental unit of time, space, and karmic manifestation (*karma-vipāka*, 业报) where sentient beings experience reality and where Buddhas exercise their skillful means (*upāya*, 方便) to guide them toward liberation.

``` [ Mount Sumeru (须弥山) ] │ ┌───────────────────────┼───────────────────────┐ │ │ │ [ North: Uttarakuru ] [ East: Pūrvavideha ] [ West: Aparagodānīya ] (北欝單越 / 享乐无苦) (東弗婆提 / 姝胜身形) (西瞿陀尼 / 游牧牛货) │ [ South: Jambudvīpa ] (南閻浮提 / 勇健聪慧) * The Birthplace of Buddhas (诸佛兴处) ```
1. The Quadripartite Architecture and Cosmic Guardian Network
According to canonical Mahāyāna scriptures such as the *Maha-samnipāta Sūtra* (*Great Collection Sūtra*, 《大方等大集經》), each of the four continents possesses distinct physical environments, bodily forms, lifespan structures, and karmic traits.
To sustain the balance of these worlds, a comprehensive protection matrix (*paritta*, 护持体系) operates across multiple celestial tiers: * Desire-Realm Deva Kings (欲界天王): Tusita Heaven King (兜率陀天王) protects the North; Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven King (他化自在天王) protects the East; Nirmāṇarati Heaven King (化樂天王) protects the South; Yāma Heaven King (須夜摩天王) protects the West. * **The Four Heavenly Kings (*Catur-mahārāja*, 四大天王) and their Retinues:** Vaiśravaṇa (毘沙門 / 多聞天王) leads the *Yakṣa* (夜叉) spirits in the North; Dhṛtarāṣṭra (提頭賴吒 / 持國天王) leads the *Gandharva* (乾闥婆) musicians in the East; Virūḍhaka (毘樓勒叉 / 增長天王) leads the *Kumbhāṇḍa* (鳩槃茶) demons in the South; Virūpākṣa (毘樓博叉 / 廣目天王) leads the *Nāga* (龍众) dragon spirits in the West. * Cosmic Stellar Coordinates: Each continent is nourished and governed by seven specific lunar mansions (七宿), three planetary bodies (三曜), and three celestial maidens (三天童女)—totaling twenty-eight mansions, twelve planets, and twelve celestial maidens across the four quarters.
2. The Unrivaled Preeminence of Jambudvīpa (南閻浮提)
Among the four continents, our world—Jambudvīpa—is explicitly declared in the sūtras to be "the most superior" (*最為殊勝*).
At first glance, this seems paradoxical. The Northern continent, Uttarakuru, offers utopian comfort: fixed thousand-year lifespans, no disease, no private property, and effortless abundance. Yet, canonical Buddhism views Uttarakuru as a "difficult state" (*akṣaṇa*, 八难之一)—a trap of heavenly pleasure where intense material comfort lulls beings into spiritual inertia, rendering them incapable of practicing the Dharma.
In contrast, human beings in Jambudvīpa possess three rare spiritual qualities: * **Bravery and Vigorous Drive (*Yongjian*, 勇健):** The capacity to endure hardship and resolutely take decisive action. * **Keen Intelligence and Mindfulness (*Conghui*, 聰慧):** The sharpness of mind to analyze cause and effect, observe impermanence (*anitya*, 无常), and penetrate ultimate reality. * **Aptitude for Holy Life (*Fanxing Xiangying*, 梵行相應):** The inclination toward purity, restraint, and selfless compassion.
Because life in Jambudvīpa is characterized by a precise balance of suffering (*duḥkha*, 苦) and intelligence, it is uniquely designated as the "Birthplace of All Buddhas" (諸佛興處). Supreme Awakening (*Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi*, 无上正等正觉) occurs exclusively in Jambudvīpa, making human birth here more spiritually precious than rebirth in heavenly realms.
3. The Avataṁsaka Hologram: Repeating Universes and Infinite Manifestations
When the perspective expands from foundational sūtras to the *Avataṁsaka Sūtra* (*Flower Garland Sūtra*, 《華嚴經》), "Four Continents" shifts from a single localized stellar unit into a fractal, infinite cosmos.
The *Avataṁsaka Sūtra* reveals that our world system, the Saha World (娑婆世界), contains ten billion Four-Continents (百億四天下). Furthermore, every single Four-Continents unit is mirrored across the ten directions throughout infinite "Ocean of Worlds" (*lokadhātu-samudra*, 世界海).
``` [ Sahā World (娑婆世界) ] │ ┌────────────────────────────┼────────────────────────────┐ │ │ │ [ Four-Continents #1 ] [ Four-Continents #2 ] ... [ Four-Continents #10 Billion ] (10,000 Buddha Names) (10,000 Buddha Names) (10,000 Buddha Names) e.g., Śākyamuni, Vairocana e.g., Vajra, Mahā-muni e.g., Immortals, Supreme ```

Because sentient beings across these ten billion worlds differ wildly in their mental inclinations (*citta-carita*, 心行), physical shapes (*rūpa*, 身相), lifespans, and karmic seeds, the Buddha manifests ten thousand distinct names and pedagogical forms in each cardinal quadrant. * In "this" Four-Continents, the Enlightened One is called Śākyamuni, Gautama, Vairocana, or the Great Ascetic. * In the eastern Four-Continents named *Good Protection* (善護) or *Kinship Wisdom* (親慧), he is called *Vajra*, *Supreme Wisdom*, or *Cloud King*. * In the northern Four-Continents named *Lion's Voice* (師子言), he is called *Great Sage* or *Field of Merit*.

This reveals a core principle of Buddhist soteriology: **Truth is one, but pedagogical adaptation (*upāya*) is infinite.** The cosmic architecture of Four Continents serves as the canvas upon which boundless Buddhas unleash infinite skillful means to meet sentient beings exactly where they are.

To understand how the "Four Continents" operates not as an abstract cosmological chart but as an active map of human experience, let us conduct a "walkthrough" (*走查*) across four typical contemporary life scenarios. Each scenario corresponds strictly to the classical definitions of the four continents and their karmic characteristics:

``` ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ CONTEMPORARY MAPPING OF THE FOUR CONTINENTS │ ├───────────────────┬───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Northern Continent│ Algorithmic Comfort Zones & Pure Consumerism │ │ (Uttarakuru) │ (Erosion of spiritual agency through instant pleasure)│ ├───────────────────┼───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Eastern Continent │ The Identity & Aesthetics Craze │ │ (Pūrvavideha) │ (Fixation on polished avatars, status, and physical │ │ │ beauty) │ ├───────────────────┼───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Western Continent │ Materialist Transactionalism & Utility │ │ (Aparagodānīya) │ (Viewing life purely as economic trade and resource │ │ │ accumulation) │ ├───────────────────┼───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Southern Continent│ The Conscious Modern Practitioner │ │ (Jambudvīpa) │ (Leveraging existential friction, grief, and reason │ │ │ to awaken) │ └───────────────────┴───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ ```
Scenario 1: The Binge-Watching, Delivery-Fed Weekend (Northern Continent / Uttarakuru)
* The Experience: You sit on a couch in a temperature-controlled apartment. High-speed internet streams endlessly recommended shows; food arrives at your doorstep with a tap; automated smart devices manage your environment. Pain is minimized; effort is unnecessary. * Classical Mapping: This mimics Uttarakuru (北欝單越). In Uttarakuru, food grows naturally without farming, clothes hang from trees, and suffering is absent until the moment of death. * The Trap Identified: Modern tech platforms aim to convert our world into an artificial Uttarakuru. However, classical texts point out that Uttarakuru produces zero Buddhas. When friction is removed from life, the capacity for introspective inquiry (*vicāra*, 观察) and spiritual determination (*vīrya*, 精进) atrophies. The bliss of the algorithm is a spiritual dead-end.
Scenario 2: The Curated Social Media Profile & Identity Chase (Eastern Continent / Pūrvavideha)
* The Experience: Spending hours tweaking profile photos, applying filters, collecting social validation, and obsession over physical fitness, clothing brands, or personal aesthetics. * Classical Mapping: This reflects Pūrvavideha (東弗婆提), literally translated as the "Continent of Superior Bodies" (東勝身洲). In classical descriptions, inhabitants of the East are defined by extraordinary physical grace, tall stature, and immaculate appearances. * The Trap Identified: When a culture fixates entirely on visual perfection, external identity, and personal presentation, it wanders into the eastern quadrant. While aesthetic elegance is pleasant, confusing the polished avatar (*rūpa*, 色相) with liberation traps the mind in vanity and subtle anxiety over aging and impermanence.
Scenario 3: The Hyper-Rational, Transactional Careerist (Western Continent / Aparagodānīya)
* The Experience: Viewing every relationship, hobby, and interaction purely through cost-benefit analysis. Life is treated as a ledger: skills are traded for compensation, networking is done for leverage, and value is defined solely by market utility. * Classical Mapping: This corresponds to Aparagodānīya (西瞿陀尼), traditionally named the "Cattle-Trading Continent" (西牛貨洲). Its culture is characterized by trade, exchange, and quantifying value through material currency (historically symbolized by cattle, pearls, and trade goods). * The Trap Identified: A life lived strictly in the western mode reduces human existence to economic transactionalism. When kindness, contemplation, and wisdom are evaluated only by "market ROI," spiritual depth is lost.
Scenario 4: The Crisis, the Hospital Hallway, and the Moment of Awakening (Southern Continent / Jambudvīpa)
* The Experience: You receive a difficult medical diagnosis, experience a painful relationship breakdown, or face a career disruption. Instead of numbing yourself or falling into despair, you sit quietly, contemplate impermanence (*anitya*), realize the fragility of conditioned existence (*saṁskāra*, 有为法), and generate deep compassion (*karuṇā*, 悲心) for others who suffer. * Classical Mapping: This is the true essence of Jambudvīpa (南閻浮提). * Correction of Misidentification: Most people incorrectly map Jambudvīpa as simply "our dirty, painful physical planet Earth." In Buddhist insight, Jambudvīpa is defined by its *psychological conditions*: it is the space where sharp suffering meets bright intelligence. Suffering acts as the alarm clock; intelligence provides the means to awaken. Because Jambudvīpa possesses both "bravery/drive" (*勇健*) and "contemplative discernment" (*聰慧*), it is the *only* terrain where a human being can transform life's crises into Supreme Awakening.
当代人为什么需要它
Why should a 21st-century reader care about an ancient cosmological architecture of Four Continents? Beyond historical interest, this concept provides crucial remedies for modern psychological and existential afflictions:
``` ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ WHY CONTEMPORARY READERS NEED THIS PERSPECTIVE │ ├───────────────────────────────┬─────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Modern Psychological Malaise │ Remedial Insight from Four-Continents │ ├───────────────────────────────┼─────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Cognitive Localism & │ Cosmic Decentralization (10 Billion │ │ Main-Character Syndrome │ Four-Continents / Infinite Perspectives)│ ├───────────────────────────────┼─────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Convenience Trap & Comfort │ Re-evaluating Friction (Jambudvīpa's │ │ Addiction │ unique value in discomfort) │ ├───────────────────────────────┼─────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Ideological Dogmatism & │ Pedagogical Universality (10,000 Buddha │ │ Rigidity │ Names adapted to specific conditions) │ └───────────────────────────────┴─────────────────────────────────────────┘ ```

1. Overcoming "Main-Character Syndrome" and Cognitive Localism

Modern digital culture fiercely encourages cognitive localism—the delusion that one’s own immediate culture, political era, or personal viewpoint is the absolute center of the universe.

The *Avataṁsaka Sūtra's* vision of ten billion Four-Continents (百億四天下) acts as a vast cognitive antidote. It instantly shatters parochial self-importance. By revealing that our world system is merely one microscopic dot within infinite "World-Oceans" (*世界海*), it restores existential humility. It teaches us that our localized worldview is but one specific frequency among infinite expressions of life.

2. Re-evaluating Friction: Why Comfort is Not Liberation

Contemporary technological culture is built on the promise of eliminating all discomfort. We treat anxiety, inconvenience, and friction as errors to be patched out by technology.

The theory of the Four Continents delivers a profound warning through its characterization of Uttarakuru. A world of pure comfort and zero hardship leads to spiritual paralysis. Jambudvīpa teaches us that existential friction is the ultimate engine of awakening. Suffering is not an unwanted glitch; it is the very catalyst that rouses the mind from spiritual sleep. When we understand this, we stop running from life's challenges and instead utilize them as raw material for wisdom (*prajñā*, 智慧).

3. Pedagogical Fluidity in an Over-Polarized World

In a globalized yet deeply divided world, humans constantly clash over vocabulary, dogmas, and cultural symbols.

The doctrine of Ten Thousand Buddha Names (十千名號) across the Four Continents provides a masterclass in communication and empathy. The sūtras explicitly state that the Buddha assumes different names, appearances, and teaching styles across different continents because the minds, life habits, and karma of beings vary wildly.

This teaches contemporary readers that truth does not demand rigid, uniform terminology. Effective compassion requires meeting people within their unique linguistic, cultural, and psychological frameworks.

To maintain precision in studying Buddhist concepts, we must clear away several prevalent misinterpretations regarding the Four Continents:

Misunderstanding 1: "The Four Continents is just outdated, erroneous ancient flat-earth geography that science has disproven."

* Clarification: While ancient cultures mapped cosmological principles onto physical geographies, in Buddhist phenomenology (*Abhidharma* / *Yogācāra*), world-systems are not neutral physical rocks floating in dead space. Space and environment are **karmic projections (*karmādhipati-phala*, 增上果)** generated collectively by the minds of sentient beings. * The Four Continents represent four fundamental modes of embodied existence: * Uttarakuru = Passive enjoyment of pleasure. * Pūrvavideha = Fixation on physical form and expression. * Aparagodānīya = Transactional and material exchange. * Jambudvīpa = Dynamic tension between suffering, agency, and inquiry. * Comparing Buddhist cosmology to empirical astronomy misses its primary purpose: cosmology in Buddhism is a map of consciousness and karmic manifestation, designed to lead beings toward liberation.

Misunderstanding 2: "Rebirth in Uttarakuru (the Northern Continent) must be the ultimate goal since it is hassle-free and utopian."

* Clarification: Classical scriptures explicitly classify rebirth in Uttarakuru as one of the Eight Difficult States (八难) where practicing the Path is impossible. Because inhabitants experience no sickness, aging crises, or poverty until the moments right before death, they never develop renunciation (*naiṣkramya*, 出离心) or compassion. * True spiritual value in Buddhism is not measured by hedonic comfort, but by soteriological agency—the ability to wake up. In this regard, Jambudvīpa (our human world) stands supreme over both utopian human continents and heavenly deva realms.

Misunderstanding 3: "If the Buddha has ten thousand different names across different continents, it means all teachings are identical and truth is completely subjective."

* Clarification: The diversity of Buddha names (e.g., Śākyamuni here, *Vajra* or *Kinship Wisdom* elsewhere) demonstrates **skillful means (*upāya*)**, not moral or philosophical relativism. * The outer expressions, names, and pedagogical devices adapt flexibly to local conditions, but the core realization—the Four Noble Truths (*catvāri āryasatyāni*, 四谛), Dependent Origination (*pratītyasamutpāda*, 缘起), and Unexcelled Awakening—remains unshakeable and unified across all ten billion Four-Continents. Skillfulness in expression serves precisely to guide varied minds to that single, ultimate realization.
