A learned friend who has spent time with these texts once put it this way: "Don't read 神通變化 as a chapter on miracles. Read it as a chapter on how awakened reality shows up for whoever is in front of it." That sentence is, I think, the key for the rest. The classical material is rich, multi-layered, and easy to flatten into either "cosmic magic show" or "Buddhist tantra spectacle." Both miss the structure. Let me walk through what the concept actually contains, then bring it into a commuter-and-coffee life, then say why this might be one of the most practical ideas in the Buddhist corpus for an age of constant digital transformation.
一、这个概念在说什么
1. 骨架:法身 (dharmakāya) 与 善權力 (skillful power)
If 神通變化 has a backbone, it is this single structural claim: the awakened reality (法身 dharmakāya) is itself without color, without form, without image — yet through 善權力 (shàn quán lì, "skillful power," a form of upāya-bala), it appears in whatever form fits whoever is asking.
《華嚴經》(Avataṃsaka Sūtra) opens the topic with a verse that you should hear twice:
「諸佛方便不思議,隨眾生心悉現前。」 "The Buddhas' skillful means are inconceivable; according to each being's mind, they appear right before them."
This is the seed. Everything else — the jewel trees, the dragon kings' treasures, Mañjuśrī putting Mount Sumeru into a mustard seed, the bodhisattva going through ordinary human life — is unfolding from this one principle. The point is not that Buddhas have a giant toolbox of magical effects. The point is that reality-as-it-is has no fixed shape, and wisdom-compassion lets it take whatever shape is needed.
If you forget this structure, the rest of the concept becomes a magic catalog. If you keep it, every later example becomes a description of how this formlessness takes form.
2. 现象层:身、境与物类的无碍变现
This is the layer most people picture first, so let's get it clear and then move on.
Cities and treasures: 《寶積經》(Mahāratnakūṭa Sūtra) describes the Tathāgata entering a city: by 神變之力 (the power of spiritual transformation), countless sandalwood trees, hundreds of vajra trees, jeweled vessels and robes appear. The text explicitly says:
「如是无量情与非情,皆是如来神通道力之所变化。」 "Such countless beings and non-beings are all transformations by the Tathāgata's penetration-power."
At a dragon-king assembly, by the power of the wish-fulfilling jewel and dragon-power, jeweled canopies, banners, fine horses, and bell-nets spring from the earth.
Spatial 神變 (transformation of space): When 文殊師利 (Mañjuśrī) enters the samādhi called "心自在一切法莊嚴三昧" (Mind-at-liberty, all-dharma-magnificence samādhi), the assembly is instantly transported into the Tuṣita Heaven; the magnificence of buddha-fields equal to the sands of the Ganges is gathered into one land; he lifts buddha-fields on a fingertip, places Mount Sumeru inside a mustard seed, draws the four great seas into a single pore — and the water-dwelling beings are not harmed. This last detail matters: the transformation is not destructive; it's an unhindered rearranging that doesn't crush whatever it lifts.
Bodily 神變: 《大集經》(Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra) states:
「能令一身作無量,而其真身無增減。」 "Can make one body become countless, yet the true body neither increases nor diminishes."
「雖為眾生現神變,然其內心無憍慢。」 "Although displaying transformation for beings, the inner mind has no pride."
These two lines together define the moral and ontological spine of the concept: the transformation is real at the phenomenal level; the underlying reality is unchanged; and the actor carries no arrogance about it.
3. 修习根据:如意通 (wish-fulfilling penetration) 与 觀行 (contemplative practice)
At the bodhisattva level, the classical term is 如意通 (rú yì tōng, "wish-fulfilling penetration") — sometimes rendered as 如意神通 or just 神通. Notice: not "wish-fulfillment" in the sense of "I get what I want." The character 如意 (literally "as one wishes") here points to spiritual maturity sufficient to bring forth whatever skillful means a situation requires, with no friction between intention and act.
《寶積經》 and 《大集經》 give the textbook example:
「能變大海以為牛跡大海不小,又變牛跡以為大海牛跡不大。」 "Can transform the great ocean into a cow's footprint, yet the ocean is not smaller; can transform a cow's footprint into the great ocean, yet the footprint is not larger."
Interconvert the four elements at world-ending time: fire becomes water, water becomes wind. 《大集經》 adds a striking claim: 除佛以外,没有人能留碍或破坏这种菩萨的如意神通 — only the Buddhas can obstruct or interfere with a bodhisattva's wish-fulfilling penetration. Not even Śakra, Brahmā, or Māra and his host.
How is this cultivated? Through 觀行 (guān xíng, contemplative practice) and 三昧 (sān mèi, samādhi). The text gives a practice lineage: - Contemplate empty space as colored — blue, yellow, white, red, crystal-like - Let the mind settle and not wander - Then: with one toe, move the great earth and its mountains, rivers, seas at will - Walk, stand, sit, lie in empty space as if on cotton fluff drifting in the wind - Enter the fire-light samādhi (火光三昧) → the body emits wonderful light - Water and fire interchanged up and down the body - Ascend to the Brahma heavens and perform all manner of 神變
So: 神變 is not a separate supernatural faculty grafted onto an ordinary person. It arises from a deepening of contemplative stability until the ordinary boundaries of body, space, and element become permeable.
4. 教化功能:大悲現神變 (great compassion displays transformation)
This is, I think, the layer that matters most for daily life.
《寶積經》 uses a recurring formula — you can hear its rhythm in the original:
「大悲現神變,令百千眾生,聞說……」
"For the sake of great compassion, displays transformation, so that hundreds of thousands of beings may hear the teaching of…"
The text then gives a kind of species-by-species curriculum of how transformation is applied:
- 梵眾 (Brahmā beings) → hear the teaching of 慈 (lovingkindness) - 天眾 (devas) → hear the teaching of 四攝 (the four means of gathering: generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, shared identity) - 龍眾 (nagas) → hear the teaching of 捨瞋 (abandoning anger) - 夜叉 (yakṣas) → hear the teaching of 捨損 (abandoning harm) - 修羅 (asuras) → hear the teaching of 忍 (forbearance) - 迦樓羅 (garuḍas) → hear the teaching of 和合 (harmony) - 乾闥婆 (gandharvas) → hear praise of the Tathāgata - 摩睺羅伽 (mahoragas) → hear refutation of outside paths - 鬼神 (spirits) → hear praise of the Buddha's qualities
Each category of being receives a teaching calibrated to its temperament. This is not condescension. It is the precision of a master physician who knows which medicine fits which condition.
The same principle extends to the most famous scenes of a Buddha's life. 《寶積經》 makes a startling claim: the bodhisattva abides in the undefiled samādhi (住無垢定) and does not actually leave it (實不起此定) — yet, to dispel beings' doubts, he *displays* entering the womb, experiencing desire, going forth, ascetic practice, subduing Māra, awakening, parinirvāṇa, raising stūpas. All of these dramatic scenes are called "菩薩變化所為" — "the bodhisattva's transformations." The life story of the Buddha is itself a skillful display, not a biography in our modern sense.
《華嚴經》 adds that this display continues everywhere: in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, in the Tuṣita Heaven, in the homes of Brahmins and Kṣatriyas, among the serpent spirits and the highest non-form heavens. The lifespan varies from eighty years to inconceivable kalpas. The body varies from a span wide to filling the cosmos with crossed legs. The unchanging refrain: 「隨眾生心皆示現」 — "according to each being's mind, displays right before them."
A parallel, famous formulation from outside the provided material — but cited because it is so central to East Asian Buddhist imagination — comes from 《妙法蓮華經·觀世音菩薩普門品》(Lotus Sūtra, "Universal Gate of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva" chapter):
「應以何身得度者,即現何身而為說法。」 "For whatever body a being needs to be saved, [the bodhisattva] manifests in that body to teach the dharma."
Same principle, slightly different classical context.
5. 十種變化 (Ten Transformations) — the formal taxonomy
《華嚴經》 gives 神通變化 its most systematic classification. This is a ten-branch structure that must be kept intact, because it deliberately refuses to reduce 神變 to physical phenomena:
1. 一切眾生變化 — transformation of *beings themselves* 2. 一切身變化 — transformation of *bodies* 3. 一切刹變化 — transformation of *lands* 4. 一切供養變化 — transformation of *offerings* 5. 一切音聲變化 — transformation of *sounds* 6. 一切行願變化 — transformation of *vows and practices* 7. 一切教化調伏眾生變化 — transformation of *teaching and taming beings* 8. 一切成正覺變化 — transformation of *becoming perfectly awakened* 9. 一切說法變化 — transformation of *teaching the dharma* 10. 一切加持變化 — transformation of *empowerment/blessing*
Note what this list does. Only #2 and #3 are physical/spatial transformations of the kind most people imagine. #1 is the *being* being changed — transformation aimed at the recipient. #5 is auditory. #6 is intentional, behavioral. #7, #8, #9 are about awakening, teaching, and verbal communication. #10 is relational — empowerment blessing another. The structure moves outward from bodily phenomena to inward awakening to verbal to relational. It is not a list of magic tricks; it is a complete taxonomy of skillful display, where verbal and relational 神變 are explicitly counted as 神變.
6. 最大神變 (the greatest 神變) — when language does the impossible
This is the deepest layer of the concept, and the one most easily missed. The 商主天子 (a merchant-prince deva) asks whether there is something *more* awe-inspiring than physical transformation. The Buddha's answer:
「空無相願不可言說,而說於空無相無願,是名神變。」 "Emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness are inexpressible; yet to *speak of* emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness — this is called 神變."
The greatest 神變 is not turning the ocean into a footprint. The greatest 神變 is using words to point at what cannot be spoken.
The text then gives a cascade of examples of 最大神變:
- In 無我 (no-self), to speak of 我 (self) for the sake of those who need that scaffolding - In 眼空 (empty eye) and 色空 (empty form), to speak of their emptiness *without falling into the conception of emptiness* - The "pure" form of each of the six pāramitās is itself a 神變: pure giving (布施清淨) when the three wheels are pure; pure conduct (持戒清淨) when it is unconditioned; pure patience (忍辱清淨) when even a刹那 (moment) of its arising is gone; pure effort (精進清淨) when body and mind are unmoved; pure concentration (禪定清淨) when inner and outer are silent; pure wisdom (智慧清淨) when all views are extinguished. - In an undifferentiated dharma, to establish many fruits - In one taste, to distinguish three vehicles - All buddhas as one buddha, yet to speak of countless buddhas - Countless beings as one being, yet to speak of countless beings
The text concludes that this kind of 神變 「出過心相,聞者不欣,一切世間所不能信」 — "exceeds the scope of mental representations; hearers do not rejoice; no worldly being can believe it." This is the hardest claim of the whole topic: that language about the unsaid is itself the greatest transformation.
7. 两个层级:第一神通變化 vs. 神通波羅蜜多
《寶積經》 also draws a sharp distinction between two levels of 神通, and this matters for not getting confused about what 神通變化 actually is:
- 第一神通變化 — the kind of transformation even 大目揵連 (Mahāmaudgalyāyana, foremost in 神通 among the disciples) could perform - 神通波羅蜜多 — the Tathāgata's unique, irreversible penetration-pāramitā
The image: even if every being in as many eastern worlds as there are grains of sand in the Ganges each achieved Maudgalyāyana-level 第一神通變化, together they could not budge something as small as a mustard-seed-hair-tip placed by the Tathāgata. Why? 「如來以得第一波羅蜜神通波羅蜜多故」 — "Because the Tathāgata has attained the first pāramitā, the penetration-pāramitā."
The point: phenomenal 神通 is a power — it can be matched by enough people with the same power. 通波羅蜜多 is a quality of awakened reality itself — it cannot be matched because it is not in the same category. This is why 《華嚴經》 can say the great-being marks (大人相) on the Tathāgata's feet "continuously display all buddhas' and bodhisattvas' inexhaustible dharma-ocean of merit and 神通變化... without interruption through all future eons." Phenomenal 神通 happens at moments; awakened 神通 is constant.
8. 概念之间的关系 (Conceptual neighbors)
A quick map of the conceptual neighborhood so the term doesn't float: - 神通 (penetration power) is the *capacity*; 變化 (transformation) is its *manifestation*. 神通變化 names them as a unit. - 三昧 (samādhi) and 觀行 (contemplation) are the cultivation conditions. - 方便 (upāya), 善權 (skillful means), 大悲 (great compassion) give 神變 its *direction* — without these it would just be occult arts (法術). - 示現 (manifestation) emphasizes that the phenomenon appears *while the underlying reality is unmoved and unaugmented*. - 法身 (dharmakāya) is the formless ground that allows 神變 to happen without the actor being changed. - 神變 connects to 說法 (dharma-teaching), 六度 (six pāramitās), 調伏 (taming), 成正覺 (becoming awakened), and 加持 (empowerment) — not just to physical miracles.
二、生活里的走查
Now let me walk several ordinary scenes against the layers above. I'll be strict: each scene must map onto the classical structure, and I'll point out where the popular intuition drifts off.
场景一:通勤与刷手机 — 算法在替你做「随众生心悉现前」
Same subway car. Same commute. But the people around you are not in the same world. The college student is reading math. The new father is scrolling baby names. The night-shift worker is half-asleep. The trader is checking indices. Your phone, meanwhile, is showing *you* a feed shaped by years of accumulated preference — that one is a poor cousin of 善權力 / 隨眾生心悉現前. The structure is the same: an invisible power arranges what appears according to the receiver's mind.
Where it diverges from classical 神變: - The classical motivation is 大悲 (great compassion) and 調伏 (taming, leading to freedom). The algorithm's motivation is engagement, which inflames rather than liberates. - The classical condition is 無憍慢 (no pride). The algorithm tends to cultivate pride ("look at my niche taste"), which is the opposite. - The classical 最大神變 is to point at the unsaid. The algorithm specializes in never letting you reach the unsaid — there's always another swipe.
Walking it: notice when the phone shows you something. Notice that it knew what to show. Notice that this "knowing what to show" is structurally 善權力 — and ask, *for what end?* If the end is your rest and clarity, the digital layer is doing a small fragment of 神變. If the end is your dependency, it is 善權力 hijacked. The classical distinction still works.
场景二:加班 — 一天中的人际 神變
You have a meeting at 9 AM where you need to be calm and authoritative. At 10 AM, an anxious client needs soothing. At noon, an honest peer deserves truthful feedback. At 2 PM, a senior needs deference. You are the same person. Each time you become a slightly different mode.
This is 大悲現神變 at the office scale. Different beings (the senior, the peer, the anxious client) each receive the teaching that fits their condition. The classical mapping gives almost a one-to-one: - Anxious client → 四攝 (the four engagements: give presence, speak kindly, act for their benefit, share identity) - Senior → and your mode toward them may involve 捨損 (the yakṣa-mode: "don't harm this person by being too clever") - Peer → and here you might practice 最大神變: naming what cannot be said ("I think we both know this isn't working") in a way that conveys the unsayable without collapsing into gossip
Classical condition to test yourself against: 「雖現神變,內心無憍慢」 — "Although displaying transformation for beings, the inner mind has no pride." - The transformation that comes with the prideful thought "I'm so good at office politics" has failed the test. - The transformation that exhausts you because no part of you held still has failed the 法身 test — you have no unmoved center across the masks. - The transformation that genuinely serves each person, that you can put down at 6 PM without residue, that doesn't cost you the inner stillness — this is closest to the classical 神變.
The deepest layer: after a hard day of transformations, can you sit quietly and find the part of you that didn't move? That part is the 真身無增減 — the true body that neither grew nor shrank through all the changes.
场景三:亲密关系 — 一天面对好几个「众生」
You come home tired. Your partner is also tired. Add a child needing help with homework, a parent calling about their medication, a friend texting about a crisis. You are now facing 五 six beings categories in one evening.
Mapping the classical list directly: - 梵眾-mode partner (relaxed, open) → 慈 (lovingkindness presence) - 龍眾-mode partner (snappy, defensive) → 捨瞋 (gently releasing the room's anger without escalation) - 修羅-mode child (competitive, frustrated with homework) → 忍 (the patient forbearance that lets them find their own way) - 鬼神-mode parent (anxious, wanting reassurance) → praise (you've lived through this before, your stability is the medicine) - 夜叉-mode friend (spiraling) → 捨損 (your words must not add harm; sometimes the 神變 is *not saying the clever thing*)
The 大悲現神變 formula: one shift in you — noticing which "being" is in front of you, then displaying the corresponding 神變 — can let a single evening teach many emotional lessons.
But the deep catch: 內心無憍慢. If your skillful modes are serving the relationship, you are doing 神變. If they are serving your self-image as a "good partner / child / friend," the pride is the leak. The transformation becomes another form of consumption.
场景四:育儿 — 最日常的 入胎 / 受欲 / 出家 / 苦行
A mother, in one afternoon: - Talks to her 3-year-old: "Teddy is sad because you went to school." - Talks to her 7-year-old: "It's okay to feel angry, but we don't hit." - Talks to her 13-year-old: "I trust you to figure this out, but I want to know what you decided."
Each is the same mother. Each speech is a different vehicle, a different 神變.
Mapping: - This is 大悲現神變 at its most ordinary and most demanding. - It is also 入胎 (entering the 3-year-old's world), 受欲 (entering the 7-year-old's world of strong feeling), 出家 (leaving the 13-year-old's world enough to let them stand), all in one day — exactly the bodhisattva's "skillful display" of the Buddha-life scenes. - It is 法身—善權 in miniature: the underlying reality of being-a-mother is formless, and skillful power lets it appear as the version needed.
Common mis-mapping to call out: parents often believe they must find *one* "authentic" voice. The classical text says: the multiple voices ARE the authenticity, provided the underlying mind has no 憍慢 (no pride in being a "good mom") and no real identification with any one vehicle. 《寶積經》 is precise about this — the bodhisattva who displays the Buddha-life scenes actually "住無垢定實不起此定" — abides in the undefiled samādhi the whole time and doesn't actually leave it. The mother who code-switches all day but at the deepest layer *knows* that none of the children she's being-mother-to is the totality of her motherhood — she has a place of stillness underneath all the versions. That place is the 真身.
场景五:言语的最大神變 — 失去亲人的朋友说「我没事」
You are with someone who has just lost a parent. They say: "I'm fine."
This is the moment of 最大神變. What is happening cannot be said. To say "I'm sorry for your loss" is the conventional 神變 (audible, social). To say nothing and just hold them is also a 神變 — sometimes the deeper one. To say something more skillful — "Tell me about her" or just "I'm here" — is closer to the 最大神變: using language to point at what is beyond language.
Structure of the 最大神變 in this moment: - The unsaid: grief, finitude, the unrepresentable texture of losing someone - The said: "I'm fine," "I'm sorry," "Tell me about her" - The 神變: the *transformation* from unsaid to said without losing either
You are not pretending to translate grief. You are offering a 神變 — a faithful container that lets the unsaid appear in a form the situation can hold. In an era saturated with words, where words are cheap and cheapened, this 神變 is what we most need and most rarely give.
三、当代人为什么需要它
Several threads:
1. We are saturated with transformations of appearance and starving for unmoved reality. Filters, deepfakes, CGI, AI-generated faces — we live inside an unprecedented density of 神變 at the visual layer. What we lack is the 法身 side: a place that has not been transformed, that holds us across all the changes. The classical concept insists these two come as a pair. Without the 法身, the transformations either exhaust us or inflate us; with it, the transformations serve something.
2. We use transformations for display, not for teaching. Instagram, LinkedIn, dating-app profiles — these are all 大悲現神變's structural opposite: 憍慢現神變 ("pride displays transformation"). The classical model says: 神變 that has 憍慢 has already broken the conditions. This is a sharp, usable diagnostic for our era's relentless optimization of self-presentation.
3. We think 神通 means power-over. The classical text insists 神通波羅蜜多 is a quality of reality itself, not a possession. This is a deep protection: it inoculates us against chasing magic, against the cult of "high-functioning" personas, against the belief that being able to perform more transformations equals being more awake. The reverse is closer: awakening shows as the ability to perform every transformation needed without either inflating or contracting.
4. The 最大神變 is the skill we most need in an age of words. Every domain — medicine, teaching, therapy, design, software, politics — is asking for the same thing: how to convey the unsaid faithfully. The classical formulation — "emptiness is inexpressible, yet to speak of emptiness is 神變" — gives a precise spiritual grammar for that work. It is also a warning: when language loses contact with the unsaid, it becomes noise; when it sacrifices the unsaid to itself, it becomes ideology; when it serves the unsaid while remaining language, it is 最大神變.
5. The 十種變化 reminds us that transformation is mostly not physical. Of the ten branches in the 《華嚴經》's list, only two are physical-spatial. The rest are auditory, intentional, relational, verbal, and awakening-related. Our era over-invests in the first two and under-develops the other eight. Re-reading the list is a quiet correction to our collective imagination of what 神通 is for.
四、常见误读与澄清
误读 1:「神通就是魔法 / 神通就是显神通。」 Translation: 種種神變 is a magic show. Clarification: The classical structure requires 大悲 (great compassion) as motivation and 無憍慢 (no pride) as the inner condition. Display without these is 法術 (occult art), not 神變. The texts repeatedly insist on this. A 神變 that flatters the performer is not a 神變.
误读 2:「神通就是心想事成 — 我想要什么就显什么。」 Translation: 神通 is wish-fulfillment for oneself. Clarification: 「随众生心悉现前」 — *the being's* mind, not the performer. The performer displays what fits the receiver. Also: 如意通 (wish-fulfilling penetration) is named for the *skill* to act for others' welfare, not for the agent's desires.
误读 3:「神通就是身体奇迹,舍利弗、目揵连那种飞来飞去。」 Translation: 神通 is physical miracle only. Clarification: The 《華嚴經》's ten transformations explicitly include 說法變化 (transformation of teaching), 加持變化 (transformation of empowerment), 音聲變化 (transformation of sound), 行願變化 (transformation of vow/practice) — none of which are physical. The 最大神變 in 《寶積經》 is explicitly verbal: using language to point at what cannot be spoken. Confining 神通 to the physical-spatial is like confining music to drumbeats.
误读 4:「菩萨神通与佛神通只是程度差别,量不同质相同。」 Translation: Bodhisattva and Buddha 神通 differ only in degree. Clarification: 《寶積經》 explicitly distinguishes 第一神通變化 (Maudgalyāyana-type, replicable in principle) from 神通波羅蜜多 (Tathāgata's penetration-pāramitā, unmovable, irreversible, not in the same category as phenomenal 神通). Even countless Maudgalyāyana-level performers cannot move a mustard-seed-hair-tip placed by the Tathāgata. The texts mark this as a difference in *kind*, not *degree*. Phenomenal 神通 is a power; 通波羅蜜多 is a quality of awakened reality.
误读 5:「神通可以脱离伦理与慈悲单独修。」 Translation: 神通 can be cultivated as a freestanding attainment. Clarification: The classical texts repeatedly tie 神變 to 大悲, 善權, and 教化調伏. Without these, the text uses a different vocabulary (法術) — i.e., 神變 that lacks compassionate direction is classified as something else entirely, not as 神變 proper. 《大集經》's formula 「雖為眾生現神變,然其內心無憍慢」 is a non-negotiable condition, not a stylistic preference.
误读 6:「既然诸佛菩萨可以随众生心悉现前,我只要信就可以。」 Translation: Since Buddhas appear according to each being's mind, all I have to do is believe. Clarification: 「随众生心悉现前」 describes what the awakened side does; on the receiving side, the classical texts insist on 信 (faith), 願 (vow), and 行 (practice) as the conditions for the appearance to be perceived and matured. The 神變 appears; the being's preparation determines whether they can meet it. This is why 《寶積經》 describes the bodhisattva displaying the Buddha-life scenes not as automatic biography but as skillful display *to dispel beings' doubts* — implying beings need a particular kind of preparation to even see what is happening.
误读 7:「大悲现神变 = 我对别人慈悲,他们就会被转化。」 Translation: Great compassion displaying transformation means my compassion automatically transforms others. Clarification: The formula is "大悲現神變,令百千眾生,聞說……" — the 神變 opens the space; the hearing of the teaching is what carries the transformation. The 神變 is a setup; the dharma heard within it does the work. Confusing the two is a common spiritual mistake: a heartfelt environment is necessary but not sufficient; specific teaching that meets the actual condition of the being is also necessary. This is why the text lists species-by-species teachings rather than just "they all heard compassion."
A last quiet note. The phrase 「照見五蘊皆空」 from 《心經》 is the most quoted Buddhist sentence in East Asian culture, but it is not about 神通變化 — it is about 五蘊 (the five aggregates). The most quoted 神通變化-related sentence in East Asian culture is, arguably, 「應以何身得度者,即現何身而為說法」 from the 《法華經·觀世音菩薩普門品》 — and it captures, in a single line, exactly the structure we have been walking through: awakened reality, formless, taking form for the being in front of it, in order to teach. If you keep that one line and the 法身—善權 structure together, you have the spine of 神通變化. Everything else — the jewel trees, the dragon kings' treasures, Mañjuśrī's mustard seed, the bodhisattva's dramatic life, and the silent 最大神變 of language pointing past itself — is what grows from that spine.
The concept is, in the end, an instruction about how awakened attention meets a world of changing beings. It is not about doing more. It is about the kind of doing that leaves both the doer and the world more spacious, and that — when it works — the world doesn't even notice has happened. The greatest 神變 is the one that looks like nothing at all.
