At first hearing, 神通妙用 sounds like a synonym for "supernatural powers and their magical deployment" — a yogi's flying body, a clairvoyant's vision, a master who walks through walls. The Chan (禪, Zen) sources gathered in 圜悟克勤's *Yuanwu Foguo Chanshi Yulu* (《圓悟佛果禪師語錄》, *Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Yuanwu Keqin*) and the *Gu Zunsu Yulu* (《古尊宿語錄》, *Recorded Sayings of the Ancient Worthies*) are doing something quite different. They are pointing to a function that "does not lack a single thread" (不欠絲毫) yet cannot be sealed as either supernatural or merely natural, that is described in the most expansive metaphysical language and then immediately denied the name *神通妙用* itself.
Where does this term sit in the larger map of the Buddhist path? Briefly: in the Mahāyāna and Chan framework, awakening is conventionally spoken of in two movements. The first is 根本智 (fundamental wisdom) — the direct seeing of suchness (實相), the moment of "明心見性" (illuminating the mind, seeing the nature). The second is 後得智 (subsequent wisdom) — the spontaneous, fully engaged responsiveness that arises once that seeing has been confirmed. 神通妙用 is essentially 後得智 in motion. This is why the *Śūraṃgama Sūtra* (《楞嚴經》) lists the 二十五聖 (twenty-five perfected ones), each entering 圓通 (perfect penetration) through a different gate — hearing, smelling, the sexual impulse, the elements themselves — to demonstrate that this 妙用 has no fixed form. Once the ground is realized, every skillful function becomes the gate. 神通妙用 is the name for the function when it is happening: 不欠 (not lacking), 縱橫 (freely extending), 不滯 (not stuck), 不染 (not staining). It is the *linguistic handshake* between awakening and the world.
The single-sentence definition given in the brief is the spine of the whole teaching: *指證悟者本具圓滿而隨緣自在顯發、超越言詮分揀之妙用* — the wondrous function that, in the one who has realized, is originally complete, spontaneously manifests in response to conditions, and cuts through all conceptual discrimination. Let us unfold that spine.
一、這個概念在說什麼
1. 拆開這個詞:abhijñā 與 vikrīḍita
The Sanskrit term is composed of two halves that need to be understood separately, because the Chan usage carries them in a very specific direction.
abhijñā (from *abhi* "thoroughly, beyond" + *jñā* "to know"). In classical 經教 (scriptural teaching), this is enumerated as the 六通 (six penetrations): 天眼通 (divine eye), 天耳通 (divine ear), 他心通 (knowledge of others' minds), 宿命通 (knowledge of past lives), 神足通 (spiritual locomotion), 漏盡通 (penetration of the end of defilement). Some texts add four more to form the 十通 (ten penetrations). These are conventionally described as 修所成 — capacities refined through advanced samādhi. The *Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra* (《維摩詰所說經》, *Teaching of Vimalakīrti*) is one of the foundational texts for how Mahāyāna reframes this: the lay-bodhisattva Vimalakīrti famously demonstrates 神通 by manifesting the Lamp-Offering-Light Tathāgata's vast lion throne inside his one-room dwelling — a 神通 that is simultaneously a teaching on 方便 (skillful means) and 不二 (non-duality). The *Mahāprajñāpāramitā Śāstra* (《大智度論》) attributed to Nāgārjuna (龍樹) extensively distinguishes 神通 from 智慧, insisting that 神通 without 智慧 is incomplete, but 智慧 in action is itself 神通.
The Chan usage does not throw this scriptural meaning away, but it is no longer using *abhijñā* to refer to a list of capacities to acquire. The awakened mind is one that 通 (penetrates, unobstructedly connects with) all phenomena without obstruction — 通 is the key character. The 妙 is then added precisely because the awakened "knowing" is qualitatively different from the analytical "knowing" that ordinary language reaches for.
vikrīḍita (from *vi* "apart, fully" + *krīḍ* "to play"). The Chinese rendering is 遊戲 (play, sport, wanton freedom). The Chan texts use the explicit phrase 菩薩遊戲神通 (the bodhisattva's playful spiritual penetrations). This is not leisure in the casual sense; it is the freedom of a being who is no longer at the mercy of their own responses. The "play" is freedom from internal compulsion, even when functioning with full intensity — the way a master musician at the height of performance looks effortless precisely because the training has been completely absorbed.
When the two halves are joined into *abhijñā-vikrīḍita*, the term points to: thorough knowing (abhijñā) + spontaneous play (vikrīḍita) = the uncompelled, ungrasped responsive function of an awakened mind. This is the meaning carried by every use of 神通妙用 in the Chan sources under study.
2. 在整個解脫道中的位置:果地的大用
A common contemporary misreading is to place 神通妙用 in the 修法 (cultivation techniques) column — as if it were a meditation to practice or a level to achieve. The sources are unambiguous that it is a 果地 (fruition-ground) function. The 因 (cause, cultivation) side is described in terms of 妙悟 (wondrous awakening) and 明心見性 (illuminating the mind, seeing the nature). The 果 (fruition) side is the 妙用 that flows from that seeing. As the saying in *Yuanwu Foguo Chanshi Yulu* has it: 神通妙用百匝千重,不如息見忘機,家堂穩坐 — even a hundredfold, thousandfold expression of 神通妙用 is not as good as 息見忘機 (letting go of views, forgetting contrivance) and 家堂穩坐 (sitting steady in one's own house). The *better* is not more 妙用; the *better* is the simple, uncontrived resting of an awakened mind. This warns every reader that chasing 神通妙用 as a goal has already missed the point.
3. 七個內在的層面
Each layer below is a distinct strand in the classical teaching. The metaphors from the source texts are preserved in their original one-to-one correspondence, because compressing them into a single image would lose the very point the masters are making.
(a) 本來具足,非修所添 — originally complete, not added by cultivation
The most direct public instruction (*shàngtáng*, 上堂) is from *Gu Zunsu Yulu*:
神通妙用,不欠絲毫。通人分上,何用忉忉?泥多佛大,水長船高。
(Spiritual penetration and wondrous function does not lack a single thread. For one who has penetrated, what is the need of fussy talk? When there is more clay, the Buddha is larger; when the water rises, the boat rises higher.)
The two metaphors here are doing the work of reframing: 泥多佛大 — when more clay is added to a clay Buddha statue, the statue is bigger; 水長船高 — when the river water rises, the boat rises with it. The implication is that 妙用 is already complete in the way the height of a statue and the height of a boat are not *added to* but are functions of the conditions present. 不欠絲毫 — not lacking a single 毫 (the finest hair, here the smallest conceivable increment). The 忉忉 (excessive, fussy talking) is the discourse of those who still think something is missing; for the 通人 (one who has penetrated), there is nothing to add and therefore no need to keep talking.
(b) 根於妙悟明眼 — rooted in the wondrous awakening-eye
From the 因雪上堂 (public instruction at the first snow):
若是通達底人,神通妙用無可不可。若妙悟明眼底人,他一一知來處、一一知落處。
(If one is a person of thorough penetration, spiritual penetration and wondrous function has no 'can' or 'cannot'. If one is a person of wondrous-awakening clear eye, he knows, in each case, its coming from, and knows in each case its landing place.)
The function stands on a particular kind of seeing: 妙悟 (wondrous awakening), 明眼 (clear eye). Without 妙悟, what looks like 神通 is mechanical ability, charisma, or the ups and downs of a conditioned mind. With 妙悟明眼, every response knows its 來處 (origin — what triggered it) and its 落處 (landing place — what it produces). This is not a description of an external event; it is a description of the quality of the responding mind: nothing happens automatically, and yet nothing is hesitant.
A contemporary parallel — and a careful limitation. Cognitive science now speaks of 4E cognition (Embodied, Embedded, Enacted, Extended): knowing is not a disembodied computation but a process distributed across body, environment, action, and tools. 妙悟明眼 has a family resemblance to this. But there is a difference the sciences have not settled: 4E cognition does not yet account for a subject that reflexively knows its own source, a "knowing-of-knowing" that is itself the function. Whether such reflexive self-knowing is a feature of sufficiently complex information-processing systems, or whether it requires a different ontological category, remains an open question. The Chan teaching begins precisely where the scientific description is forced to leave off.
(c) 截斷擬議之機用 — the cut that severs deliberation
The most paradigmatic teaching moment is the dialogue between 臨濟義玄 (Linji Yixuan, founder of the Linji school) and 普化 (Puhua, a contemporary known for eccentric behavior) at a lay household's meal. It is recorded in *Gu Zunsu Yulu* and *Yuanwu Foguo Chanshi Yulu* with slight wording variations (the first source uses 對舉 with 本體如然, the second with 法爾如然 — both are interchangeable, as the section on translation variants in the source material notes):
臨濟於施主家齋次問普化:毛吞巨海,芥納須彌,為是神通妙用,本體如然? 普化不答,踏倒飯牀。臨濟云:「太麤生。」普化云:「這裏是什麼所在,說麤說細?」次日重赴齋,普化又踏倒飯牀。臨濟仍云:「得即得,太麤生。」普化乃斥:「瞎漢!佛法說什麼麤細?」臨濟乃吐舌。
(Linji, at a meal in a lay-supporter's house, asked Puhua: "A hair swallowing the great ocean, a mustard seed containing Mount Sumeru — is this the spiritual penetration and wondrous function, or the nature-of-things being so of itself?" Puhua did not answer; he kicked over the food table. Linji said, "Too coarse." Puhua said, "What kind of place is this to be talking of coarse and fine?" The next day, returning for the meal, Puhua again kicked over the food table. Linji again said, "Fine, but too coarse." Puhua rebuked, "Blind man! What is this 'coarse' or 'fine' in the Dharma?" Linji stuck out his tongue.)
The point is not the content of the question — the *hair swallowing the ocean, mustard seed containing Mount Sumeru* is a stock Chan image for the inconceivable capacity of awakened mind. The point is the form: the question presents two alternatives, 神通妙用 (function) and 本體如然 (substance as it is), and asks which side the phenomenon belongs to. Puhua's response — the kick — is the demonstration that the dichotomy itself is what needs to be cut. 圜悟's verdict in his comment on this case: the two behaved 如水入水、如金博金 (like water entering water, like gold striking gold) — a perfect fusion where the question and the answer are not separate. The 神通妙用 is the cut itself, the moment when analytical thinking — even sophisticated analytical thinking — runs out, and authentic response emerges from the body, not from the concept. Puhua does not think "the dichotomy must be deconstructed"; he kicks the table. That action is 神通妙用.
(d) 體用互攝:神通妙用與田地穩密 — substance and function mutually contain each other
This is the most architecturally sophisticated teaching in the source material, and it is unique to 圜悟克勤's framing. 田地穩密 (the field is steady and dense) is the 體 (substance) — the unmoving ground of being. 神通妙用 is the 用 (function) — the boundless responsive action that issues from that ground.
神通妙用底縱橫十字,不離田地穩密;田地穩密底坐斷十方,不離神通妙用。
(The freely extending, cross-shaped functioning of spiritual penetration does not depart from the steady field; the steady field that sits-and-cuts the ten directions does not depart from the wondrous function.)
The same passage continues: 體用何妨分不分 — substance and function may be distinguished or may not be distinguished; 見聞 (seeing-and-hearing) can serve as substance, 聲色 (sounds-and-forms) as function; sounds-and-forms can serve as substance, seeing-and-hearing as function. The pairing is not linear (ground first, function second). It is 互攝 (mutually containing): each is in each, and either may be made the entry point for a teaching.
The warning against one-sidedness is sharp:
田地穩密者,擡腳不起,探頭太過;神通妙用者,放腳不下,收身未轉。猶較些子。
(Those who have only the steady field cannot lift a foot, cannot extend a head [too frozen, too retracted]; those who have only 神通妙用 cannot set down a foot, cannot turn their body [too entangled, cannot withdraw]. Even such are still "slightly off.")
The 十字縱橫 (the cross-shaped action extending in all four directions) is the image of full responsiveness — but if it is one-sided, it is 猶較些子 (still somewhat short). The mature function is both: ground and responsiveness fused, not two halves added together.
(e) 菩薩遊戲:度生而心不喜樂 — the bodhisattva's play: accomplishing beings without the heart that rejoices
故菩薩遊戲神通,淨佛國土、成就眾生,心不喜樂。
(Therefore, when the bodhisattva plays in spiritual penetrations, purifying buddha-fields, accomplishing beings, the heart does not rejoice or delight.)
This is the 維摩詰 spirit brought into a single sentence. The bodhisattva's 神通 is the means; the 淨佛國土 (purifying the buddha-field) and 成就眾生 (accomplishing beings) are the direction; and the 心不喜樂 is the seal. 喜樂 (joy, delight) here is not joy in general — the Mahāyāna certainly values 隨喜 (appreciative joy). It is the specific delight that comes from identifying as the one who helped, who saved, who accomplished. The bodhisattva is not without warmth, but the warmth is not pinned to a self-image. 遊戲 (play) implies the freedom of a child absorbed in play, of an artist absorbed in art — the responsiveness is total, and the self-claim is absent. (This is not far from what the contemporary psychological research on flow states describes — the absorption in which the self-narrating temporarily falls away — with the difference that Chan insists this is a function available at all times, not a transient state.)
(f) 解黏去縛,全體顯露 — unsticking and unbinding, the whole body revealed
乾坤大地、草木叢林、纖洪長短,一一交羅,能作無量無邊神通妙用;然而到直截處,連一剳也不消,呈現為淨裸裸、赤灑灑、全身獨露。
(Heaven-and-earth, grasses-trees-thickets, the fine and the vast, the long and the short, all interweave and can perform measureless, boundless 神通妙用; yet at the most direct point, even a single 剳 [a pinprick of effort] is not consumed, presenting itself as pure-and-naked, red-and-bare, the whole body alone revealed.)
The carpentry metaphor is concrete: 抽釘拔楔 (pulling out nails and wedges) is the everyday act of freeing a stuck joint. The bodhisattva with realized 大受用 (great function) 更無凝滯 (no longer has any stuckness) — and so the 妙用 naturally takes the form of helping others unstick. Not heroic intervention, but the natural expression of an unbound awareness. This is 神通妙用 in its most ordinary and most powerful form: 一句話 (one sentence) that loosens the grip of a long-held view, 一個動作 (one gesture) that releases someone from a frozen identity. The "剳" (a tiny stroke of effort) is worth noting: at the most direct point, even the smallest exertion is not consumed — the function is effortless in the technical sense, not because nothing is happening but because the agent-self that would record "I am doing this" has dissolved.
(g) 不許固定封定 — it cannot be fixed or sealed
This is the most paradoxical layer, and it is the layer that catches the contemporary reader most often. The source text gives the most expansive possible description:
三百六十骨節,一一現無邊妙身;八萬四千毛端,頭頭彰寶王剎海。不是神通妙用,亦非法爾如然。
(Each of the 360 bones, one by one, manifests a boundless wondrous body; each of the 84,000 hair-tips manifests a jewel-king world-sea. This is not spiritual penetration and wondrous function, nor the nature-of-things being so of itself.)
And similarly:
盡大地撮來,如粟米粒大……非是神通妙用,亦非本體如然。遇緣即宗,隨處應機。
(Gathering the whole great earth, [making it] like a grain of millet ... this is not spiritual penetration and wondrous function, nor the substance being so of itself. Meeting conditions, it is the ancestor; responding to each, it is the mechanism.)
Why the denial? Because the moment the awakened function is sealed as "spiritual power" (神通) or as "naturalness" (法爾如然), the play has stopped. The teaching wants 遇緣即宗 (in every condition encountered, it is the origin/ancestor) and 隨處應機 (in every place, it responds to the mechanism of the moment). The function is the meeting of condition and awareness, not a substance to possess or a state to enter. The seal placed on the passage is: 千眼頓開,直下十方坐斷 — a thousand eyes open at once; immediately, the ten directions are cut-and-sat-upon. Direct, immediate, uncategorizable. This is the 落處 (where it lands).
4. 在日常應答中彰顯 — the daily response
The most striking Chan move is to apply the term 神通妙用 to a thoroughly ordinary reply. 圜悟 evaluates two answers to the same question:
年窮歲盡時如何? (What about it when the year is at its end?) 石門答:東村王老夜燒錢 (Old Man Wang in the east village burns paper money at night [the traditional 除夕 / 冬至 practice for ancestors]). 圜悟評:可謂神通妙用 (this can be called 神通妙用). 開先暹答:依舊孟春猶寒 (It's still the early spring cold). 圜悟評:田地穩密 (this is the steady field).
The two responses are not different in spiritual rank; they show the two sides of the same awakened function. The "東村王老夜燒錢" reply is 神通妙用 because it pulls the questioner out of an abstract dread of "year's end" into the vivid image of an actual life being lived — the entire 二十五世紀的儀式 (centuries-old ritual) collapsed into one concrete village scene. This is the Chan aesthetic of 活句 (living phrase) versus 死句 (dead phrase): a phrase that points beyond itself is 活; one that can be analyzed to death is 死. The 東村王老 reply is a 活句.
二、生活裡的走查
Now we walk the classical dimensions through the situations a contemporary reader actually lives. Each scene will be mapped strictly to the definitions above, and I will flag the mis-mappings that almost everyone makes on first try.
場景一:職場突發危機 — 泥多佛大,水長船高
You are a mid-level product manager. Five minutes before a routine planning meeting, you learn that the CEO will be sitting in and that a major client has just signaled they may leave. Your body floods with adrenaline; your inner voice begins narrating: "I'm not senior enough. I don't have the data. I shouldn't have been put in this."
The classical mapping is to the 本來具足 / 泥多佛大水長船高 layer. The situation itself provides the field. The water is rising — the boat rises with it. You do not need to "become a different person" or "find some extra confidence" or "tap into your higher power." The capacity to meet this meeting is not somewhere else; it is in the same meeting. The classical warning is precise: 不欠絲毫 — you do not lack a single thread. What is missing is not capacity; what is missing is the recognition that the capacity is already there.
The mis-mapping almost everyone makes: they read 神通妙用 here as "some superhuman composure to access" — a power to add to the existing self. The Chan teaching cuts this off directly. The 妙用 is the letting-go of the narrative of insufficiency, which is the *opposite* of adding anything. In a contemporary frame, this resembles a state cognitive scientists call "self-distanced reappraisal" — the moment you can see the anxious narration as narration rather than as fact — though the scientific term does not capture the depth of 不欠 (and the science itself notes that self-distancing techniques work unevenly and do not by themselves constitute transformation).
場景二:親密關係中的反覆衝突 — 截斷擬議
A couple has been arguing for years about whose family to visit for the major holiday. Each cycle: articulate arguments, pros-and-cons lists, appeal to past precedent, request mediation from friends, a temporary truce, then the cycle restarts. Both partners are intelligent, well-intentioned, exhausted.
The classical mapping is to the 截斷擬議 layer. 臨濟's question, "毛吞巨海, 芥納須彌 — is this 神通妙用 or 本體如然?" sounds like a sensible question; it has two sides, two possible answers, and so the arguing continues forever inside the dichotomy. Puhua's response — kick the table — is the 神通妙用 moment: the cut that severs the deliberation itself. In a real couple, the moment this can look like is: one partner suddenly, without logic, says, "I don't want to keep talking about this. Let's just go to your parents this year." That 抽釘拔楔 (pulling out the wedge) move is not a solution; it is the cut that frees the cycle.
The mis-mapping: treating 神通妙用 here as a "relationship technique" — a clever negotiation move, a communication hack. The Chan teaching is that the 神通妙用 is precisely not a technique. The 妙悟 that grounds it is the recognition that the conflict is being driven by a conceptual frame (the dichotomy "your family / my family" as a fixed opposition) that is itself the cause of the suffering. 普化 does not "decide" to kick the table; the kick is the response that arises when the dichotomy is seen through. The contemporary frame might call this a "paradigm shift"; Chan would say the paradigm is what fell away.
場景三:刷手機時的注意力 — 知來處,知落處
It is late. You are not doing anything in particular. You pick up the phone, open an app, scroll for forty-five minutes, and then feel a flat, vaguely irritated tiredness. The classical mapping is to the 妙悟明眼 / 知來處知落處 layer. The 明眼 — the clear eye of wondrous awakening — sees, in this single act, both 來處 (the impulse: the discomfort of the day, the wish to feel something pleasant) and 落處 (the landing: a kind of numb dissatisfaction that will repeat tomorrow). The 神通妙用, when it is present, is not "I will now stop scrolling" (that is a decision, often a fragile one). The 妙用 is the moment of seeing — 知來處知落處 — itself, in which the scrolling is no longer automatic because the chain is now visible.
The mis-mapping that almost everyone makes: equating 妙悟明眼 with "mindfulness" in the popular sense (a meta-awareness that watches thoughts from a slight distance). Mindfulness-based interventions in contemporary mental health have measurable effects on attentional control, but they are trained skills; 妙悟 is not a skill. The 明眼 is not a function you can rehearse into existence by counting breaths; it is the *functioning of awareness when the obscurations have been seen through*. The contemporary "I notice the urge to scroll" is the near-cousin, but Chan would say the recognition in 妙悟明眼 is *of the source of the urge itself* — not the urge as content, but the way the urge arises from a particular configuration of avoidance and longing.
場景四:自我成長的追求 — 不許固定封定
You have been meditating, doing retreats, reading widely, perhaps having powerful experiences in practice — moments of dissolution, of light, of equanimity. You begin to feel a quiet certainty: "I have grown. I am on the other side of something." You consider teaching, writing, sharing. The classical mapping is to the 不許固定封定 layer. The text says it directly: 三百六十骨節,一一現無邊妙身 — *not* 神通妙用. 盡大地撮來,如粟米粒大 — *not* 神通妙用. The moment the awakened function is described and felt as "mine" — as a state I have entered, a level I have reached — the play has stopped and the seal has been placed. The "千眼頓開" (thousand eyes opening) is the function of clear seeing; the next moment, the temptation to claim it as "I have seen" is itself what has to be seen through.
The mis-mapping that defines contemporary spirituality: 神通妙用 = a high state. The Chan teaching is a direct negation: even the most expansive description, if fixed, is not it. The contemporary parallel might be the difference between insight and identity-construction-around-insight — cognitive science does describe this as a known failure mode of contemplative practice, where practitioners construct a "spiritual self" around peak experiences and then defend it. Chan would say: the construction is the very thing that has to be seen through. 遇緣即宗 — in every condition encountered, the function is the *origin*; it is not a possession.
場景五:助人時不自覺的自戀 — 心不喜樂
A friend comes to you in real distress — a relationship ending, a job lost, a parent ill. You listen well, you say the right things, you accompany them through the worst of it. Afterward, you feel the warm glow of having been useful. The next time they need someone, you find yourself hoping they will remember what you did before; you feel a small sting when they seem to be turning to someone else.
The classical mapping is to the 菩薩遊戲 / 心不喜樂 layer. The 遊戲 is the spontaneous response — the listening, the words, the accompaniment. The 心不喜樂 is the seal: in the moment of helping, the heart does not invest in the image of itself as helper, does not lay claim to the gratitude that will or will not come. The 神通妙用 is the *capacity itself*; the 心不喜樂 is what protects the capacity from being claimed.
The mis-mapping: the contemporary helper often reads 神通妙用 as "powerful empathic ability" — a superior capacity to read people, give advice, hold space. Chan would say that such a capacity, if accompanied by even the slightest identification ("I am the one who understands you"), is not yet 遊戲 — it is work. The 遊戲 is a freedom that the work-form of helping does not have. 維摩詰 (Vimalakīrti) shows the layperson version of this: he is fully available, fully responsive, fully skilled — and fully without claim. The contemporary psychological research on compassion fatigue describes the burnout that comes from the helper's identity becoming too invested; Chan would say this fatigue is the predictable outcome of missing the 心不喜樂 in the 菩薩遊戲.
場景六:「我是不是開悟了」 — 息見忘機
You have a powerful experience in a long retreat — a moment of no-self, of clear seeing, of ungraspable peace. You come out into the world. The first time someone cuts you off in traffic, the peace evaporates. You notice, with some shock, that the peace was conditional. You go to a teacher, or to a book, or to your own sitting, and ask: "Was that real? Was that awakening?"
The classical mapping is to the final inversion: 神通妙用百匝千重,不如息見忘機,家堂穩坐 — even a hundredfold, thousandfold expression of 神通妙用 is not as good as letting go of views, forgetting contrivance, and sitting steady in one's own house. The "better" is not more 妙用; the "better" is the simple, uncontrived resting. The home that has been returned to is the same one that was always there; the experience was a glimpse, not an acquisition. The 神通妙用 was real; the 息見忘機 is more real, because it does not depend on a peak.
The mis-mapping: the contemporary reader almost always hears "the experience was not real" — that the high experience is being dismissed. Chan is not dismissing it. The high experience is itself 神通妙用 in a particular configuration. The mistake is making the experience *the standard*, the test, the badge. The 家堂穩坐 is the ordinary continuity in which 神通妙用 lives, not the extraordinary moment in which it is displayed. The contemporary parallel is a real finding in psychology: the people who report sustained well-being after peak experiences are not those who cling to the peak, but those who integrate it into ongoing life. The 息見忘機 is the *integration*, not the negation of the peak.
三、當代人為什麼需要它
First, against the optimization myth. The contemporary self-help and high-performance culture is built on the premise that you can always add a missing capacity: a new skill, a new habit, a new mindset, a new supplement. The Chan teaching under study is blunt: 不欠絲毫. You do not lack a thread. The 神通妙用 is the recognition of what is already complete, not the addition of something. This is counter-cultural in the deepest sense, and the contemporary reader who is exhausted by endless self-improvement may find in it not a new technique but the *end of the search* — which is, paradoxically, the beginning of the 妙用.
Second, against the fragmentation of modern self. We live in a culture of specialization, where the professional self, the family self, the inner self, the online self, the public self are kept carefully in separate folders. The 神通妙用 layer, especially as 體用互攝, points to a function that does not respect these folders. 遇緣即宗,隨處應機 — the same responsive awareness that handles a code review handles a child's nightmare handles a parent's illness handles an unexpected moment of beauty. The fragmentation is a function of the obscurations; the 妙用 is a function of the unobstructed.
Third, against the spiritual-materialism trap of our era. Contemporary spirituality is, on the whole, a marketplace of experiences: retreats promising awakening, apps promising calm, teachers promising powers. The Chan teaching is unsentimental about this: every attempt to seal the function as a state, a power, an experience is the very thing that has to be cut. 三百六十骨節,一一現無邊妙身……不是神通妙用. The teaching cannot be bought at any price because the moment it is bought, it has been lost.
Fourth, as a model for the AI era. When a sufficiently capable AI system produces a response that looks like deep understanding, the question of what 神通妙用 might mean in a non-biological substrate is worth sitting with. Chan would say, I think, that the 妙悟明眼 is not what an information-processing system can do; the 知來處知落處 is not the same as a system that can introspect on its own training distribution. A trained model can simulate the 活句, can produce the 東村王老夜燒錢 at the right prompt. Whether that is the same as 神通妙用 is a question the Chan sources cannot answer for us, but they would insist on the question being asked with the precision of the 不許固定封定: not the simulation equals the function, but neither is the simulation entirely not-it. The question is open, and the wisdom is to hold it open.
Fifth, as a counter-image to the helping-with-image-of-self model. In a culture saturated with personal branding, even the impulse to help becomes content for the brand. The 心不喜樂 of the bodhisattva's 遊戲 is a counter-image worth carrying: that there is a form of help that is fully present and fully without claim, and that the absence of claim is not coldness but a deeper warmth.
四、常見誤讀與澄清
誤讀一:神通妙用 = 神奇異能
This is the dominant contemporary misreading. The Chan sources do not deny 神通 in the classical sense — the *Śūraṃgama* lists the six or ten penetrations, the *Vimalakīrti* shows them in layperson life, the *Mahāprajñāpāramitā Śāstra* discusses them at length. But the Chan usage, especially as developed by 圜悟克勤, is about a function that is described in the most expansive metaphysical language and then denied the name. The 東村王老夜燒錢 is 神通妙用. The 息見忘機家堂穩坐 is more than 神通妙用. The teaching wants to relocate the wonder: not in what an awakened person can *do* that others cannot, but in what an awakened person's every response *is*.
誤讀二:神通妙用 = 本體自然(法爾如然)
The 臨濟/普化 case is set up precisely to cut this identification. Puhua refuses to answer whether the hair-swallowing-ocean is 神通妙用 or 本體如然 — and the refusal is the answer. The two are presented as alternatives, and both alternatives are precisely the kind of 擬議 (deliberation) that 截斷 (the cut) is needed to sever. To say "it is just the nature of things" is to lose the responsiveness; to say "it is supernatural power" is to miss the naturalness. The 妙用 lives in the not-picking.
誤讀三:神通妙用 = 神秘體驗
If a 妙悟明眼 ever does manifest in a high experience, the 妙用 is present. But the experience is not the 妙用 — the 妙用 is the functioning, not the event. The Puhua case, the 東村王老 reply, the 抽釘拔楔 of a stuck person, the 抽釘拔楔 of a stuck *self* — all are 妙用, and none of them need to feel like a peak experience. The 妙悟明眼 is not the *contents* of experience; it is the *quality of the responding* that happens in ordinary conditions.
誤讀四:神通妙用 = 田地穩密(體 = 用)
This is the misreading the 互攝 (mutual containment) teaching directly undoes. 田地穩密 is the unmoving ground; 神通妙用 is the boundless functioning. The two are not the same, but neither can be present without the other. To take only 田地穩密 is 擡腳不起, 探頭太過 — frozen, withdrawn, unable to respond. To take only 神通妙用 is 放腳不下, 收身未轉 — entangled, unable to withdraw. The mature function holds both, and holds them without making them into two things to be held. 體用何妨分不分.
誤讀五:神通妙用 = 修法
This is the misreading the 因 / 果 (cause / fruition) distinction directly undoes. 神通妙用 is a 果地 function — the operation of an awakened mind. The 因 side is 妙悟, 明心見性, the long work of seeing through the obscurations. To try to practice 神通妙用 as a cultivation technique is to look for the function of a fruit in a tree that has not yet matured. The 泥多佛大, 水長船高 is not "do more to grow more"; it is "the conditions being present, the Buddha-statue is larger, the boat is higher." The 因 is the clearing of the obscurations; the 果 is the spontaneous function that needs no cultivation. (The 圓悟 phrasing, in its own indirect way, says as much: even 百匝千重 of 神通妙用 is not as good as 息見忘機 — the naturalness, not the cultivation, is the seal.)
收束
The 臨濟/普化 case, the 東村王老夜燒錢 reply, the 三百六十骨節 passage, the 泥多佛大水長船高 image, the 抽釘拔楔 metaphor, the 體用互攝 architecture — these are not separate items to be learned. They are the various ways the Chan tradition points at a single function: the response of an awakened mind, originally complete, unsentimental, unsentimental about its own unsentimentality, and precisely for that reason capable of being of use in the world. To live from this function is to let the 神通妙用 be, in Puhua's word, the only response to the dichotomy that no longer binds — and to do so without making a project of the letting go. That is the whole teaching, in the end. Not a doctrine to acquire, but a play to enter.
