What is This Concept Saying? (这个概念在说什么)
In the tapestry of Buddhist liberation (*mokṣa* / 解脫道), Nirvikalpa (無分別, *Non-discrimination* or *Non-conceptualization*) is not merely a peaceful state of mind; it is the ultimate doorway to reality. To understand its position in the path, one must first understand what binds us: Vikalpa (妄分別, *false discrimination*).
Our ordinary minds operate as relentless engines of projection. We split the seamless flow of experience into binary opposites: self and other, good and bad, gain and loss, pure and impure. As the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* (*大方廣佛華嚴經*) warns: “If one abides in discrimination, one destroys the eye of purity” (若住於分別,則壞清淨眼), compounding ignorance and delusion. In the *Mahā-ratnakūṭa Sūtra* (*大寶積經*), this mechanism of delusion is laid bare: sentient beings, misled by the conventional placement of names and labels, project arbitrary divisions onto that which has no intrinsic dualistic nature. This continuous mental grasping (*upādāna* / 取) is the fuel of delusion (*kleśa* / 煩惱). Thus, the scriptures declare a radical premise: “To extinguish discrimination is equivalent to exhausting all afflictions” (滅於分別即等同於盡煩惱).
What, then, is Nirvikalpa?
At its core, *Nirvikalpa* is defined as: **the essential state of mind and meditative seal (*mudrā-mukhā* / 印門) that departs from all illusory discriminations, attachment to linguistic names, and binary opposites, directly penetrating the intrinsic, pristine, and non-dual equality of all phenomena (*dharmatā* / 法性).**
The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* presents profound natural metaphors to illustrate how the Buddha’s Dharma operates seamlessly without conceptual division: * The Flame (火焰無分別): The essence of fire is singular; it burns all kinds of objects—precious sandalwood or dry trash alike—yet the flame itself makes no discrimination. * The Rain Cloud (雨滴無差別): A great cloud rains down indiscriminately upon the entire earth, giving moisture equally to vast oceans, fertile fields, or barren rocks; the raindrops themselves harbor no differentiation. * Elements and Celestial Bodies (地性、水性、風性、日照及大梵王): The natures of earth, water, wind, sunlight, and the Great Brahmā King all respond universally to all beings without entertaining thoughts of "one versus many" or holding discriminatory ideas.
Similarly, the Tathāgata (如來) abides in the "unconditioned and non-discriminative state" (*無作無分別*). When realizing supreme enlightenment, there is in truth "no dharma to be obtained" (無法可得), no conceptualization of "dharma versus non-dharma," and no deliberate mentation (*manasikāra* / 作意).
To cultivate this state, the *Mahā-ratnakūṭa Sūtra* outlines specific seals (*mudrā* / 印) and gateways of retention (*dhāraṇī-mukhā* / 總持門) for Bodhisattvas: 1. **The Seal of the Boundless (*無邊印*): Sealing all phenomena with the understanding of their boundless nature opens the Gateway to the Seal of Non-Discrimination** (*無分別印門*). 2. **The Seal of Thoughtlessness (*無念印*): Sealing all phenomena with non-clinging opens the Gateway to the Seal of True Equality in Non-Discrimination** (*實無分別平等印門*). 3. **The Gateway of Dhāraṇī (*總持門*)**: When one achieves "non-grasping and non-discrimination" (*無取無分別*) toward the six sense faculties (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind), six sense objects, the four great elements, worldly names, and even defilements like greed, anger, and ignorance, one enters the master-retention of reality.
Crucially, *Nirvikalpa* is not a drop into empty voidness. The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* emphasizes a double transcendence: "Although not relying on the path of words, one does not cling to wordlessness" (雖復不依言語道,亦復不著無言說). Furthermore, while knowing all phenomena are empty and tranquil, "one does not give rise to mental thoughts about emptiness" (不於空起心念). It transcends binary counts ("far removed from numbers" / 遠離數), reaching a non-dual horizon described as: "In non-existence, there is no duality; nor does non-duality exist" (無中有無二,無二亦復無).
Walking Through Daily Life (生活里的走查)
To see how *Vikalpa* operates—and how *Nirvikalpa* liberates—let us walk through three familiar modern scenarios.
Scenario 1: The Work Email & Performance Review
* The Event: You receive a concise email from your supervisor: *"Please step into my office at 3:00 PM."* * The Trap of Vikalpa (妄分別): Instantly, the mind’s labeling engine fires up. *Is this good or bad? Am I getting fired? Did I make a mistake on yesterday's report?* You divide the sentence into threat vs. safety, self vs. attacker. Heart rate rises, anxiety sets in. This is "falsely giving rise to discrimination where no fixed entity exists" (無有法中妄起分別). You then grasp onto these projections (*upādāna* / 取), building a narrative of ruin before walking through the door. * The Practice of Nirvikalpa (無分別行): The sensory input is simply black text on a screen—raw visual data (*rupa* / 色). Nirvikalpa does not mean becoming illiterate or failing to show up at 3:00 PM. Rather, it means experiencing the words as they are, without instantly superimposing emotional binaries of panic or defensiveness. You acknowledge the meeting time clearly (functional discernment) without clinging to imagined threat narratives ("non-grasping and non-discrimination" / 無取無分別).
Scenario 2: Social Media Scrolling
* The Event: You scroll through your feed and see a former classmate posting photos of their luxury vacation or career promotion. * The Trap of Vikalpa: The mind instantly categorizes: *Success vs. Failure, Superior vs. Inferior, Them vs. Me.* A wave of inadequacy or envy arises. You cling to the category of "I am falling behind." The scripture warns: "If you abide in discrimination, you destroy the eye of purity" (若住於分別,則壞清淨眼). * The Practice of Nirvikalpa: Recognizing that social media posts are merely transient combinations of light pixels and arbitrary signs (*世生名* / worldly names). The mind rests like the sun shining down (*日照*) or rain falling (*雨滴無差別*)—reflecting the images cleanly without generating internal hierarchies of self-worth. You see the post, know what it depicts, but refrain from weaponizing it against yourself.
Scenario 3: A Heated Argument in Intimate Relationships
* The Event: Your partner leaves the dishes in the sink again. * The Trap of Vikalpa: The dirty dishes stop being ceramic objects and become symbolic weapons: *"They don't respect me," "I am always the victim, they are the oppressor."* You map the situation into a rigid dualistic battlefield. * The Practice of Nirvikalpa: Recognizing how the mind projects "identities" and "stories" onto basic physical events. As taught in the *Mahā-ratnakūṭa Sūtra*, realizing that the intrinsic nature of these projected discriminations is ungraspable (*自性無所有、其相寂靜*) allows one to enter a quiet mind—the entry point to *Mahoraga Samādhi* (摩睺羅三昧). You address the dishes functionally, without bringing a cloud of resentment and identity-warfare into the conversation.
Where people map it wrong: Most people assume "non-discrimination" means being blind—failing to distinguish a red traffic light from a green light, or pretending dirty dishes are clean. This is a profound error. Functional cognition (knowing red means stop) is conventional clarity (*saṁvṛti-satya* / 世俗諦). *Vikalpa* is the egoic, dualistic, emotional projection superimposed upon that clarity (e.g., "Red lights always ruin *my* day because the universe hates me"). *Nirvikalpa* retains crisp operational awareness while severing the emotional drama of binary grasping.
Why Contemporary People Need It (当代人为什么需要它)
We live in an era hyper-engineered for Vikalpa.
Modern digital algorithms—from news feeds to dating apps—are literal binary architectures designed to categorize, polarize, and commodify human attention. They thrive on forcing us into immediate dualisms: *Like vs. Dislike, Swipe Left vs. Swipe Right, Us vs. Them.* The modern mind suffers from severe "cognitive exhaustion" caused by making hundreds of micro-evaluations every hour, constantly maintaining an egoic identity against an endless stream of judgment.
The Contrast with AI and Neuroscience: * AI & Algorithms: Modern Artificial Intelligence relies entirely on high-dimensional binary discrimination—sorting data into categories ($0$ or $1$, spam or non-spam). While AI can mimic human decision-making, it operates purely in the realm of hyper-vikalpa. It lacks *Prajñā* (wisdom / 般若) because it has no awareness of the empty, intrinsic nature (*dharmatā*) of the data it processes. * Neuroscience: Brain-imaging can observe how the Default Mode Network (DMN) lights up during self-referential, discriminatory thinking, and how it quietens during deep meditative states. However, neuroscience views non-discrimination merely as a neural state or a regulation of brain waves. It cannot substitute for the spiritual awakening (*bodhi*) that liberates a practitioner from the illusion of a inherent self, nor can it realize the "unconditioned" (*asampaṁskṛta* / 無為) nature of reality.
Contemporary humans need *Nirvikalpa* because it is the ultimate mental detox. It allows us to step off the hamster wheel of endless judging, labeling, and defending, restoring what the scriptures call the "Eye of Purity" (清淨眼).
Common Misreadings and Clarifications (常见误读与澄清)
Misreading 1: "Non-discrimination means turning into a zombie or an unfeeling stone."
* Clarification: Some assume *Nirvikalpa* requires suppressing all thoughts, becoming numb, or losing the ability to tell right from wrong. In reality, *Nirvikalpa* is not stupor; it is luminous, unclouded wisdom (*Prajñā*). Just as the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* uses the metaphor of fire (*火焰無分別*) and rain (*雨滴無差別*), the enlightened mind acts with immense, responsive vitality toward all beings without falling into personal attachment or aversion. It is "non-grasping and non-discrimination" (*無取無分別*), not cognitive shutdown.
Misreading 2: "Non-discrimination means total silence, rejecting all language and concepts."
* Clarification: People often think that to practice non-discrimination, one must never speak or use logic again. The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* explicitly refutes this: "Although not relying on the path of words, one does not cling to wordlessness" (雖復不依言語道,亦復不著無言說). Silence can become just another binary trap if one clings to "quietness" as superior to "speech." True non-discrimination uses language freely as a tool without being imprisoned by it.
Misreading 3: "Non-discrimination means indulging in Nihilistic Emptiness."
* Clarification: Beginners often mistake non-discrimination for a blank, nihilistic "nothingness." The scripture warns against this subtle trap: "Although knowing all phenomena are empty and tranquil, one does not give rise to mental thoughts about emptiness" (雖了知一切諸法皆是空寂,不於空起心念). Clinging to "emptiness" (*śūnyatā-grāha* / 執空) is still a form of *Vikalpa*. True *Nirvikalpa* transcends both "existence" and "non-existence," entering the non-dual reality where "in non-existence, there is no duality; nor does non-duality exist" (無中有無二,無二亦復無).
