Opening Framing
The classical material on this concept comes from the *Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra* (《瑜伽師地論》, T1579), an encyclopedic Yogācāra treatise that uses 心遠離 as a fixed technical term, always paired with its counterpart 身遠離 (kāya-viveka, bodily seclusion). The pairing is not incidental: these two together form what the text calls the *perfection of seclusion* (遠離圓滿), one of the early conditions for serious practice. 心遠離 also has a defined place in the larger path — it sits in the sequence leading from solitude (空閑) through calm abiding (奢摩他, shamatha) through insight (毘鉢舍那, vipashyana) to "realization of dharmas as they truly are" (如實覺了). It is a structural member of the practice, not a mood, not an isolated technique, and not a casual synonym for "meditation."
What follows unfolds this with the precision the classical text demands, then walks through what it actually looks like in contemporary life.
一、这个概念在说什么
1.1 The Heart of the Definition: 作意 (manasikāra), Not "Thought"
The single most important word in the classical definition is 作意 (manasikāra) — and it is one of the most routinely mistranslated terms in Buddhist English. It is not "thought" (想, saṃjñā), not "mindfulness" (念, smṛti), not "volition" (思, cetanā), not "emotion" (受, vedanā). 作意 is the way attention is directed — the mode or quality of engagement that the mind brings to whatever it is meeting. In Abhidharma analysis, it is a mental factor (caitta) that accompanies every moment of consciousness; it is the *tuning* of attention.
So when the *Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra* defines 心遠離 as
捨離一切染污、無記所有作意,修習一切性善、能引義利的定地作意與定資糧加行作意
— *abandoning all defiled and indeterminate modes of attention, and cultivating all wholesome, beneficial concentration-grounded and concentration-provisioning modes of attention* — it is making a specific claim about the quality of attention, not the absence of mental activity:
- 染污作意 — attention deployed through greed, ill will, delusion, pride, jealousy, possessive love. Not merely "bad thoughts" but specific modes of attending that bind the mind to objects in afflictive ways. - 無記作意 (avyākṛta) — attention that is neither wholesome nor unwholesome in karmic valence, but is occupying the mind in a way that leads nowhere. Bare perception drifting, neutral scanning, mechanical responding, "zoning out." - 定地作意 — attention deployed in modes that belong to the ground of concentration (samādhi-bhūmika), i.e., the modes of attention that occur within or directly support meditative absorption. - 定資糧加行作意 — attention deployed in modes that *prepare for and provision* concentration: dharma study, single-tasking, ethical training, deliberate contemplation. Not yet concentration itself, but gathering the conditions that make it possible.
心遠離 is therefore not the suppression of thought, not blankness, not emotionlessness. It is a deliberate shift in the quality of attention — abandoning two specific modes (defiled and indeterminate) and actively cultivating two others (concentration-grounded and concentration-provisioning).
1.2 The Pairing with 身遠離 (kāya-viveka)
The treatise carefully distinguishes 心遠離 from its companion:
- 身遠離 (bodily seclusion) = 不與在家眾及出家眾雜住、獨一無侶 — physically not dwelling mixed with householders or renunciates, alone without companion. The external, locational aspect: a quiet place. - 心遠離 (mental seclusion) = the qualitative shift in 作意 described above. The internal, attentional aspect.
Together with 處所圓滿 (a suitable place) and 威儀圓滿 (appropriate bodily comportment), these two form the complete 遠離 (seclusion) needed for serious practice. Neither alone is sufficient. This pairing matters greatly because contemporary practice routinely collapses both into "go on a meditation retreat," as if physical isolation automatically produced mental purification. The classical text is explicit: the two are distinct, and the mental dimension is its own work, with its own technical content.
1.3 Where 心遠離 Sits in the Practice Sequence
The *Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra* explains the Buddha's teaching 「當樂空閑,勤修觀行,內心安住正奢摩他」 by mapping its clauses to stages:
- 「樂處空閑」 — *delighting in dwelling in solitude* — DISPLAYS 身遠離 (bodily seclusion). - 「於內修習九種住心」 — *internally cultivating the nine modes of mind-abiding, called 內心安住正奢摩他 (internally abiding in proper shamatha)* — DISPLAYS 心遠離 (mental seclusion). - 「善修毘鉢舍那後,如實覺了」 — *after well-cultivating vipashyana, realizing dharmas as they truly are* — the further consequence.
And the causal sequence:
由樂處空閑 → 能引發正奢摩他 → 能引發毘鉢舍那 → 如實覺了 *(From solitude → arouses shamatha → arouses vipashyana → realizes dharmas as they truly are)*
The 九種住心 (nine modes of mind-abiding) is a specific technical progression within the *Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra* for training the mind toward shamatha — typically enumerated as 內住 (internal abiding), 等住 (equal abiding), 安住 (stable abiding), 近住 (close abiding), 調順 (taming), 寂靜 (pacification), 最極寂靜 (thorough pacification), 專注一趣 (one-pointedness), and 等持 (equipoise). 心遠離 is what this whole progression looks like from the inside — the qualitative feature that runs through all nine stages. It is not "after" shamatha; it is what shamatha looks like as it is being cultivated. And it is what makes vipashyana possible.
1.4 心遠離 as One of the Five Branches of 修斷
The treatise also structures serious practice into five branches (修斷五支), of which 心遠離 is the second:
1. 身遠離 (bodily seclusion) 2. 心遠離 (mental seclusion) 3. 奢摩他品三摩地 (samādhi of the shamatha class) 4. 毘鉢舍那品三摩地 (samādhi of the vipashyana class) 5. 常委所作 (sustained, diligent practice)
Notice the structure: the first two are CONDITIONS; the next two are SAMĀDHIS that arise on the basis of those conditions; the fifth is the CONTINUOUS EFFORT that maintains them all. 心遠離 here is not itself a meditation state but the preparatory infrastructure that allows the deeper samādhis to arise.
1.5 The Bodhisattva Application: Not Physical Withdrawal
In the description of the bodhisattva's twelve aspects of abiding (菩薩住十二行相), the same pair 身遠離 / 心遠離 appears, but with a striking addition: the text goes on to say that the bodhisattva 「不捨遠離軛而與諸有情及其餘眾共住」 — *does not abandon the yoke of seclusion while dwelling together with sentient beings and others.*
This is a crucial expansion. 心遠離 here is not synonymous with physical withdrawal. The bodhisattva may dwell in the midst of others while maintaining the yoke of seclusion — meaning the qualitative shift in 作意 is preserved even in mixed company. The bodhisattva's engaged social life is not in tension with 心遠離; it is made possible BY 心遠離 when the 作意 has been genuinely transformed. This is perhaps the most contemporary-relevant aspect of the entire classical teaching, and we will return to it.
1.6 What 心遠離 is NOT — the Distinction from 遠離味
The same treatise contains a related but distinct term, 遠離味 (taste of seclusion), appearing in verses such as
於心相善知,能餐遠離味 於心相遍知,能受遠離味
— *by well knowing the features of mind, one can taste the flavor of seclusion; by thoroughly knowing the features of mind, one can receive the flavor of seclusion* — connected to dhyāna, constant diligent mindfulness, and the experience of joy free from defilement.
This is not the same concept as 心遠離. 遠離味 is the fruit or experiential flavor that arises when 心遠離 has been cultivated — the joy, the relief, the felt sense of being unburdened. 心遠離 itself is the structural shift in 作意; 遠離味 is what that shift tastes like from the inside. They are sequential, not synonymous, and the structural one (心遠離) is the more fundamental for practice. The distinction matters: beginners often chase the flavor (pleasant meditative states) while neglecting the underlying shift in attention quality.
二、生活里的走查
Now let me walk through several contemporary scenes, mapping them carefully onto the classical structure and flagging the most common mapping errors as I go.
2.1 早晨通勤 (Morning Commute)
The 作意 you bring to a 30-minute subway ride has at least four possible shapes:
- 染污: resentment about the commute, mentally composing complaints to your boss, scrolling comparison-content that triggers envy or self-pity, listening to podcasts that feed ill will. - 無記: blankly scrolling through neutral feeds, dissociating into music, staring at nothing while mind drifts. - 定資糧加行: deliberately setting the day's 作意 on the way in, listening to a dharma or ethics-oriented talk with study-quality attention, walking the last block mindfully, single-tasking on a single piece of purposeful reading. - 定地: rarer — moments where attention actually settles into sustained single-pointedness on the breath, a chosen reflection, or even a single piece of work, in a way that constitutes the actual beginning of shamatha rather than merely its provisioning.
Common mapping error: *"I'm meditating on the subway, so I'm doing 心遠離."* Not necessarily. If the 作意 underneath is still defiled (using the meditation as a way to avoid something) or merely neutral (going through the motions), the structural shift has not occurred. The form of meditation is not the same as the quality of attention.
2.2 工作场景 (Workplace)
The 作意 you bring to a task, a meeting, a colleague:
- 染污: scheming for advancement, resentment toward a coworker, image-management of self-presentation, possessive attachment to a project being "yours." - 無記: going through the motions, attending a meeting while mentally composing lunch plans, mechanical execution of tasks without genuine presence. - 定資糧加行: deliberately structuring the workday as a single-tasking discipline; reviewing intentions before meetings; preparing materials so attention can actually land; reading work-related texts with study-quality attention. - 定地: rare moments of unified attention — the engineer who forgets lunch because the problem is genuinely absorbing, the writer in flow, the surgeon mid-procedure.
The text's claim is that 心遠離 means practicing the shift AWAY from 染污 and 無記 and TOWARD 定資糧加行 and 定地 as a steady policy throughout life, not only in formal sitting. Workplace 作意 is on the same continuum as meditation 作意.
Common mapping error: treating work as "non-practice." The classical text treats all 作意 as the same field; the bodhisattva passage makes this explicit.
2.3 亲密关系 (Intimate Relationships)
The 作意 you bring to a partner, friend, parent, child:
- 染污: possessive love, the silent ledger of "what I have done for you," pride-flavored helping, jealousy-flavored attention, criticism-as-care. - 無記: distracted presence, "I'm listening" while on phone, cohabitation without actual meeting, the slow erosion of attention that long relationships are prone to. - 定資糧加行: deliberately cultivating single-pointed presence in conversation; reviewing one's habitual reactive patterns; ethical restraint in speech; the practice of putting down the phone first. - 定地: rare moments of genuine, sustained, unpossessive meeting — undistorted presence that, when it occurs, is a glimpse of what shamatha-inflected relations can be.
The bodhisattva passage is especially relevant here: 心遠離 is precisely what enables one to dwell with people without being swept into defiled or merely neutral modes of attending.
Common mapping error: *心遠離 in relationships = emotional distance or coldness.* The text says the opposite. It is the quality of attention that lets actual meeting happen, undistorted by possession or indifference. Emotional warmth that arises from 定資糧加行作意 is part of the practice, not opposed to it.
2.4 刷手机与信息消费 (Scrolling and Information Consumption)
This is the paradigm contemporary site of 無記作意:
- Most routine social media consumption is the textbook case: 無記 in karmic valence — not actively wholesome, not actively unwholesome — but fully occupying the mind in a way that preempts the cultivation of 定資糧加行, let alone 定地. It is structurally obstructive even when it is not morally bad. - Some consumption is 染污: outrage content designed to activate ill will; comparison content designed to activate envy; attention-predation content designed to activate lust or grasping. - The classical prescription is not "abandon your phone" but: shift the 作意. Read with study-quality attention. Listen with contemplation-quality attention. Engage with ethical review. Even simple reading can be 定資糧加行作意 if the quality of attention has been deliberately changed; even a phone can become a vehicle for that shift.
Common mapping error: *"Phone use is neutral, no karma involved."* The text explicitly puts 無記作意 in the same category as defiled — both are to be ABANDONED. They differ in karmic valence, but they are identical in their obstructive function: both preempt the cultivation of wholesome concentration-grounded attention.
2.5 睡眠前后 (Sleep Transitions)
The classical tradition has always treated the 作意 one falls asleep with as formative — it conditions dream content, sleep quality, and the mental state of the next morning.
- 染污/無記: falling asleep to rage-scrolling, resentful review, neutral exhaustion — these condition the night and the next day in ways the practitioner will feel without necessarily identifying the cause. - 定資糧加行: a deliberate review or contemplation practice before sleep; recollection of one's intentions and actions; ethical or mettā review; brief contemplation of a chosen theme. - 定地: rarer — falling asleep with attention genuinely settled in a single object, a kind of natural shamatha at the threshold of sleep.
2.6 The Most Common Mapping Error, Across All Scenarios
The single most common contemporary error is collapsing all four categories into a binary of "good thoughts vs. bad thoughts." This loses:
- The structural category of 無記 (indeterminate), which the text explicitly identifies as a target for abandonment *along with* defiled. Much of modern attention is 無記 and is therefore a target of practice, not a neutral baseline. - The distinction between 定資糧加行 (provisioning) and 定地 (ground itself). The text maintains that both are needed, and that practice begins with the provisioning form before arriving at the ground. - The technical nature of 作意 as the quality of attention rather than the content of thought.
A second major error is reading 心遠離 as *"going to a quiet place"* or *"silencing the mind."* The text explicitly distinguishes it from 身遠離 (which IS about place) and explicitly defines it through *positive cultivation* (修習), not suppression.
A third error is reading 心遠離 as a state rather than a sustained practice. The text places it as a *condition maintained continuously*, including "while dwelling with others." It is an orientation of 作意, not an episodic attainment.
三、当代人为什么需要它
3.1 The Information Environment Structurally Induces 無記 and 染污
Modern attention is the most heavily engineered environment in human history. Apps, platforms, content feeds, and notification systems are designed to occupy 作意 in precisely the modes the *Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra* says to abandon — 染污 (outrage, comparison, lust, envy) and 無記 (mindless scrolling, neutral scanning, the background hum of distraction). Very little of the contemporary information environment supports 定資糧加行, and almost none of it supports 定地.
Without deliberate counter-training, the default mode of contemporary attention is the very thing the classical text identifies as to-be-abandoned. 心遠離 in this context is not an exotic meditative achievement but a basic skill for remaining sane under conditions of engineered distraction.
3.2 Physical Retreats Fail Without 心遠離
Many contemporary practitioners go on meditation retreats (which constitute a temporary 身遠離) and find the experience shallow — they emerge calmer for a few days, but the underlying 作意 hasn't changed, so the old patterns quickly reassert. The text's insistence that 身遠離 and 心遠離 are distinct and both required explains exactly this phenomenon: physical solitude is a condition but not the practice itself. The work of shifting 作意 has to happen within whatever environment one is in; a quiet place alone never does the inner work.
3.3 The Bodhisattva Dimension: Dwelling Among Without Being Swept By
Most contemporary adults cannot live in physical isolation. They must work, raise children, care for parents, navigate relationships, and engage with the world. The bodhisattva passage in the *Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra* directly addresses this: 心遠離 is precisely what allows one to dwell among people — in workplaces, families, communities, networks — without the 作意 being swept into defiled or merely neutral modes. The bodhisattva's "yoke of seclusion" is internal, maintained through the discipline of attention even in mixed company.
For people who must engage the world, 心遠離 is the structural feature that makes engagement possible without being consumed by it. Without it, every human contact becomes an occasion for either 染污 (capture by the defilements) or 無記 (erosion by the neutral); with it, engagement becomes sustainable.
3.4 The Neuroscience Adjacency (with Necessary Caution)
Contemporary neuroscience has documented several phenomena relevant to this teaching: the brain's "default mode network" tends to produce self-referential, often negatively-valenced mental activity when not engaged in tasks; sustained attention is a trainable, finite resource with measurable effects on brain structure and function; contemplative practice produces measurable changes in attentional networks.
These findings are adjacent to the classical teaching — they describe what happens in the brain when 作意 is or is not deliberately trained — but they do not constitute a "scientific proof" of 心遠離. In particular, neuroscience cannot adjudicate the moral-valuational distinction between 善 / 不善 / 無記, nor the specifically Buddhist account of what constitutes a fully liberated 作意. The adjacency is useful as a contemporary illustration; the classical concept is not reducible to brain training.
3.5 The "Attention Economy" Framing
In contemporary discourse, "attention" is treated as a scarce resource extracted by platforms for profit. This framing is partial but illuminating — it makes clear that whatever the quality of one's 作意, the surrounding environment is actively competing for it. 心遠離 in such an environment requires active, continuous counter-training, not occasional retreats. The classical text, written long before the attention economy, nevertheless describes the precise structural problem it creates and the precise structural remedy it requires.
四、常见误读与澄清
误读 1: 心遠離 = "calming the mind" or "making the mind quiet"
Clarification: 心遠離 is not about reducing mental activity but about shifting the *quality* of attention from defiled and indeterminate modes to concentration-grounded and concentration-provisioning modes. A mind can be very busy in 定資糧加行作意 (e.g., engaged in ethical review, dharma study, or single-tasking on a complex problem) and still be fully in 心遠離.
误读 2: 心遠離 = 身遠離, "go to a quiet place"
Clarification: The text explicitly distinguishes the two. 身遠離 is about external location (not dwelling mixed with others); 心遠離 is about internal 作意. A person in a quiet place can be saturated with 染污作意; a person in a crowded subway can be in genuine 心遠離.
误读 3: 染污作意 = "bad thoughts"; 無記作意 = "neutral thoughts, no problem"
Clarification: Both are to be abandoned, per the text. They differ in karmic valence but are identical in their structural obstruction of concentration-grounded attention. Much contemporary attention (passive scrolling, neutral drifting, going through the motions) is 無記 and is therefore a target of practice, not a neutral baseline to be tolerated.
误读 4: 定地作意 = only formal deep meditation
Clarification: The text distinguishes 定地作意 (concentration-grounded) from 定資糧加行作意 (concentration-provisioning preparatory). Both are part of 心遠離. Most actual practice begins with the provisioning form (study, ethical training, single-tasking, deliberate review) before arriving at the concentration-grounded form. To require "deep meditation" before engaging 心遠離 is to put the cart before the horse.
误读 5: 心遠離 = emotional detachment or coldness
Clarification: The bodhisattva passage directly contradicts this. 心遠離 in relationships is precisely what enables genuine, unpossessive, undistorted *meeting* with others. It is the quality of attention that lets one be present rather than reactive. Emotional warmth that arises from 定資糧加行作意 is part of the practice, not opposed to it.
误读 6: 心遠離 is a state to be achieved and held
Clarification: The text places 心遠離 as a *condition maintained continuously*, including "while dwelling with others." It is a sustained orientation of 作意, not an episodic attainment. The deeper samādhis (奢摩他品 / 毘鉢舍那品) are the attainments that arise on the basis of 心遠離; 心遠離 itself is the underlying orientation that allows them.
误读 7: Confusing 心遠離 with 遠離味
Clarification: 心遠離 is the structural shift in 作意. 遠離味 (the taste of seclusion) is the experiential *flavor* — joy, relief, the felt sense of unburdening — that arises when the structural shift has been cultivated. They are sequential, not synonymous. Beginners often chase 遠離味 (pleasant meditative states) while neglecting 心遠離 (the underlying shift in attention quality), which is the more fundamental work.
误读 8: 心遠離 is only for monastics or solitary practitioners
Clarification: The bodhisattva passage explicitly applies 心遠離 to those who dwell "with sentient beings and others" — i.e., engaged, non-isolated practitioners. The text's framing is that 心遠離 is precisely what makes such engagement possible without being consumed by it.
结语
The classical concept of 心遠離, as laid out in the *Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra*, is a precise technical teaching about the quality of attention (作意). It distinguishes two modes to be abandoned — defiled (染污) and indeterminate (無記) — from two modes to be cultivated — concentration-grounded (定地) and concentration-provisioning (定資糧加行). It is the structural partner of 身遠離 (bodily seclusion), but distinct from it; it can be maintained in the midst of others, as the bodhisattva passage shows.
For contemporary practitioners, the teaching diagnoses a specific problem (modern attention is structurally induced into the very modes the text says to abandon) and prescribes a specific discipline (sustained training of 作意 away from those modes and toward the wholesome, concentration-supporting ones). It is not exotic, not ascetic-only, not a mood. It is the foundation for everything else in the classical sequence from shamatha through vipashyana to 如實覺了 — the inner work that lets the outer path actually take hold.
