What This Concept Is About
In the foundational text of Yogācāra doctrine and soteriological practice, the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* (解深密經, in Xuanzang's Tang-dynasty translation), 相縛 (Sanskrit: *lakṣaṇa-bandhana*, "the binding of marks") is a pivotal concept that reveals why sentient beings suffer and how the mind becomes trapped.
To understand 相縛, one must first restore the classical connotations of "相" and "縛" — they must not be read superficially:
* What is "相" (the marks of conditioned activities, 諸行相): Here, "相" by no means refers merely to the "appearance" or "looks" seen by the eyes, but rather to **the features, marks, distinctions, and conceptual frameworks that all conditioned phenomena (一切有為法, *sarva-saṃskṛta-dharma*) present within the mind**. It includes the forms of material objects (色相, *rūpa-lakṣaṇa*), the pleasant and painful feelings of inner experience (受相, *vedanā-lakṣaṇa*), conceptual recognition of things (想相, *saṃjñā-lakṣaṇa*), the constructions of volition and emotion (行相, *saṃskāra-lakṣaṇa*), and even self-identity, KPI metrics, social evaluations — every "characteristic mark" delineated by the mind. * What is "縛" (binding): It means binding, solidifying, kidnapping. When the mind not only apprehends these marks but **mistakes them for real, unchanging entities possessing an intrinsic self-nature (自性, *svabhāva*)**, the mind is "latched onto" by these marks — this is 相縛.
In the theoretical architecture of the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, 相縛 never exists in isolation; it is tightly bound up with 麁重縛 (*dauṣṭhulya-bandhana*, "the binding of heaviness" — the latent affliction-seeds deep in body and mind, the heaviness, rigidity, and unserviceability of the physical and psychological), and together they are known as the 二縛 (the two bindings):
1. 相縛 (the lock of the cognitive dimension): On the surface level, the mind is firmly dragged along and fixed by the features and labels of various phenomena. 2. 麁重縛 (the heaviness of the physiological and subconscious dimension): Through the continued operation of 相縛, accumulated anxiety, fatigue, afflictive inertia, and a sense of loss of control gather in the depths of body and mind.
The sūtra states clearly: 相縛 is the source and precondition of 麁重縛. If the mind cannot be freed from attachment to the marks of conditioned activities (liberation from 相縛), it is absolutely impossible to be freed from that thick afflictive heaviness in the depths of body and mind (liberation from 麁重縛); and if the two bindings are not released, one cannot attain the peace of nirvāṇa (涅槃).
So how can one be released from 相縛? The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* sets out two extremely crucial mechanisms of liberation:
* Rational insight: the mark of ultimate truth (勝義諦相) and the marks of conditioned activities (諸行相) are neither one nor different Many people think that to be released from 相縛 one must completely flee from or destroy the "marks" of reality. The sūtra points out that this is by no means so. The ultimate truth (勝義諦, *paramārtha-satya*, the ultimate reality of life) and the marks of conditioned activities (the various features of the phenomenal world) are neither entirely identical nor entirely disconnected (the characteristic of "離一異性," being free from both identity and difference). If the two were completely unrelated, practitioners could not "remove" (除遣) the marks upon seeing phenomena; only by understanding that "the nature of phenomena is precisely reality" can one, in facing all kinds of marks, neither be deceived by them nor need to flee phenomena themselves — thereby removing attachment on the spot and breaking through 相縛.
* **Cultivation practice: diligent cultivation of calm-and-insight (止觀, *śamatha-vipaśyanā*) and "skillful knowing of the mind" (善知心) Being released from 相縛 cannot be achieved by merely speaking of emptiness; one must rely on the dual cultivation of concentration and wisdom (勤修止觀)**. In concrete operation, the sūtra proposes the 善知心 method of subtly contemplating the changes of the mind: * 善知心減 (skillfully knowing the mind's decrease): clearly perceiving how the defiled minds contaminated by 相縛 and 麁重 are gradually weakening and diminishing under the power of calm-and-insight; * 善知心增 (skillfully knowing the mind's increase): clearly perceiving how the pure observing power that counteracts the two bindings is gradually growing and accumulating; * 善知心出 (skillfully knowing the mind's emergence): truly knowing the process by which the mind completely crosses over 相縛 and 麁重縛, and actively guiding it toward the full liberation of the mind.
A Walkthrough in Daily Life
So that 相縛 does not remain an abstract doctrinal term, we can place the mind in the highly "symbolized" and "labeled" everyday scenes of contemporary people, and see how 相縛 occurs in an instant:
Scene One: Scrolling Late at Night and "Digital Features"
* The manifestation of the marks of conditioned activities (諸行相): You post an update on social media. Then, on the screen, a red digital notification "+1" appears, a like count of "15", and a comment saying "I feel like you haven't been yourself lately." These icons, numbers, and text characters are all "marks of conditioned activities" received by the mind. * The occurrence of 相縛: Your mind is instantly locked onto that "15" (few likes) or that "not quite yourself" evaluation. You begin to interpret this mark as "I'm not well-liked" or "I've been rejected." Your cognition is completely hijacked by this localized symbol; the mind loses its breadth and rapidly contracts and fixes itself within this "mark of being negated." * The chain reaction of 麁重縛: As 相縛 takes shape, the latent seeds of anxiety in the subconscious are activated. You feel tightness in your chest, a racing heart, restless insomnia — and the next day you are groggy and exhausted. This bodily tension and psychological heaviness is 麁重縛. * The most common place of misattribution: People often think that "the phone," "the algorithm," or "that commenter" is the culprit that binds them. In fact, the photoelectric signals on the phone screen are only "marks" — what truly kidnaps you is the mind's solidified attachment to these marks (相縛).
Scene Two: Workplace Performance Review and "Identity Labels"
* The manifestation of the marks of conditioned activities: Quarterly review results are announced; your performance is rated "B−" or "needs improvement." * The occurrence of 相縛: You do not merely see those letters; you reinforce "B−" in your mind into a fixed, substantial label — "I'm a failure," "I'm not capable." This is 相縛: taking a temporary evaluation result assembled from multiple conditions (諸行相) as an unchanging entity of self-nature. * A walkthrough with 善知心: * *Unaware state*: Locked tight by 相縛, triggering 麁重縛 (feeling extreme depression, severe bodily fatigue). * *善知心減*: If you can activate calm-and-insight contemplation at this point, you suddenly notice: "Look, my mind is again treating a performance letter as 'me'; that anxious, angry defiled mind is arising — but I am watching it, and its power is beginning to decline." * *善知心增*: At the same time, you perceive: "That cool, calm awareness in my mind that does not dance to the letter's tune is gradually strengthening." * *善知心出*: In the end, the mind completely disengages from the illusion that "a performance letter equals self-worth" — "a performance rating is just an objective feedback that changes at any time (a mark); it cannot bind my mind" — guiding the mind out of 相縛.
Why Contemporary People Need It
Contemporary society is an era in which "marks" erupt and overload as never before.
If we use modern cognitive science or the visual mechanisms of artificial intelligence as a comparison: the human brain, like AI models, is extremely skilled at "feature extraction" (Feature Extraction). To process vast streams of information rapidly, the brain continually reduces complex reality into various labels, features, and predictive models — in Buddhist terms, this is extracting the "marks of conditioned activities" (諸行相).
However, AI extracts features in order to compute, whereas the contemporary mind, after extracting features, sinks into them entirely: We take data metrics (KPIs, bank-account figures), social identities (titles, property), emotional labels (married, single, abandoned) — these "feature-marks" — as the substantial body of life itself. This leads modern people to be universally caught in a high degree of 相縛. And 相縛 inevitably brings 麁重縛 — this is the fundamental cognitive cause of the explosive growth of depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, and mental attrition in modern society.
(*Note: Although "predictive processing theory" or "pattern recognition" in contemporary cognitive science strikingly parallels 相縛 in describing how the brain is trapped by its own constructed labels, the two are fundamentally different. Science treats feature extraction as an optimization mechanism shaped by evolution, seeking relief only at the level of neurotransmitters and behavior; the 相縛 of the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, by contrast, stands at the height of the path of liberation that utterly transcends the cycle of birth-and-death, aiming — through severing attachment to the real existence of marks — to completely transform the ground of the mind (轉依, *āśraya-parāvṛtti*) and attain supreme nirvāṇa. Science explains the mechanism but cannot provide the path of liberation.*)
Understanding 相縛 gives contemporary people a crucial key to liberation: it reminds us that the inescapable heaviness deep in body and mind (麁重) does not arise without cause — its root lies in the fact that on the level of surface cognition we are latched onto by various "labels of phenomena." As long as we activate calm-and-insight contemplation in daily life — even if only catching a glimpse in an instant that "a mark is only a mark, neither real nor unreal" — one link of the chain that tightly shackles the mind will come loose.
Common Misreadings and Clarifications
To grasp this concept accurately, the misreadings most common among the general public must be clarified:
* Misreading One: The "相" in "相縛" refers to the material appearance of objects seen with the eyes, or a person's physical features. * Clarification: This is an extremely narrow reading. In the Yogācāra system, the "marks of conditioned activities" (諸行相) cover the features of all conditioned phenomena. Besides external forms, they include inner pleasant and painful feelings (受相), conceptual thought (想相), the tendencies of emotion and volition (行相), as well as linguistic symbols, social identity, and so on. Anything that is marked by the mind and possesses a boundary of features falls within the scope of "相."
* Misreading Two: Being released from "相縛" means eliminating all marks — for example, closing one's eyes and not looking, not thinking, living in seclusion. * Clarification: This is a misunderstanding of "removing the marks of conditioned activities" (除遣諸行相). The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* particularly emphasizes that "the mark of ultimate truth and the marks of conditioned activities are free from identity and difference" (勝義諦相與諸行相離一異性). Ultimate reality does not exist apart from the phenomenal world; removing the marks of conditioned activities means removing the attachment to their real existence and the grasping mind — not destroying the phenomena themselves. If one thinks that destroying the external world brings liberation, one falls into annihilationism (斷滅見, *uccheda-dṛṣṭi*). True liberation is, amid a world of proliferating marks, the mind reflecting phenomena like a mirror — passing without lingering; the marks naturally do not bind the mind.
* Misreading Three: As long as one gets a massage or relaxes the body (alleviating 麁重), the cognitive attachment (相縛) naturally comes undone. * Clarification: The sūtra clearly sets out the logical sequence of the two bindings — if 相縛 is not released, 麁重縛 absolutely cannot be released. The heaviness of body and mind (麁重) is the manifestation of subconscious affliction-seeds; its root lies in the surface mind continuously projecting marks and clinging to them, thereby "feeding" firewood to the subconscious afflictions. Merely relaxing at the level of the body or the emotions, without severing the cognitive 相縛 through calm-and-insight, means that when new triggering labels appear, the deep heaviness will surge back.
