"Great practice" (mahācaryā) is not about accomplishing one spectacular deed, nor is it about busying oneself into an ever-restless "good person." It is the bodhisattva's career of practice undertaken for the benefit of both self and others: universally cultivating the pāramitās, gathering in sentient beings through great compassion, not dwelling in marks through wisdom, and sustaining this practice continuously until sentient beings attain ultimate liberation.
The *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* (*大乘庄严经论*, T1604) places it within a complete path of liberation: taking refuge in unsurpassed bodhi and arousing the mind (发心) is the "great support" (大依); putting practice into motion for the benefit of oneself and others is the "great practice" (大行); and thereby趋向 unsurpassed bodhi is the "great fruit" (大果). Thus, great practice stands between the mind of aspiration and the fruit of buddhahood: if the vow is not actualized in action, it remains only a direction; if action is not guided by bodhicitta (菩提心, the mind of awakening), it may be only worldly merit. Great practice gives bodhicitta a body, a duration, and concrete methods.
It comprises at least several inseparable dimensions.
First, its object is vast. When the bodhisattva arouses the mind, he does not intend to help only those he likes, those with whom he has affinities, or those who share his views—he gathers in all sentient beings. The *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* calls this the "great taking" (大取). "Taking" here is not possession; it is including all sentient beings within the scope of one's vow. One's actual capacity is of course limited, but the compassionate vow cannot pre-exclude any category of living beings.
Second, its content is complete. The treatise explains great practice as "pervasively practicing the wholesome roots that are the intrinsic nature of all pāramitās" (遍行诸波罗蜜自性善根). It is not occasional giving, volunteering, or cultivating a single good deed, but the universal cultivation of the pāramitās. Giving must correspond with ethical discipline (持戒), or help may carry hidden harm; diligence must be accompanied by patience (忍辱), or enthusiasm quickly turns to resentment; meditative concentration (禅定) keeps the mind from being dragged along by circumstances; wisdom (智慧) prevents all good deeds from being bound by the mark of self, a sense of merit, and rigid views. This is not merely listing a few terms: it means that the bodhisattva's practice must gradually become an integrated, mutually corrective, jointly maturing training of one's whole life.
Third, benefiting self and benefiting others are not separated. "Benefiting self" means increasing merit and wisdom, taming afflictions, and maturing the capacity for liberation; "benefiting others" means using compassion and skillful means (方便, upāya) to help sentient beings leave suffering and increase their supramundane roots of virtue. Speaking only of self-perfection may turn practice into a refined form of self-management; speaking only of helping others while neglecting one's own greed, aversion, desire for control, and ignorance may do harm under the guise of good intentions. Great practice is not sacrificing oneself in exchange for others' happiness—it matures wisdom in the very process of benefiting beings, and uses ever-maturing wisdom to make that benefiting of others purer and more effective.
Fourth, it can bear the difficulties of the process. The *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* pairs "great patience" (大忍) with the arising of practice: when one truly begins to benefit sentient beings, one encounters misunderstanding, rejection, setbacks, toil, and failure. Patience here is not indulging harm, nor is it demanding that one exhaust oneself; it is facing difficult tasks without casually abandoning the direction of bodhi, while using discipline, wisdom, and skillful means to discern when one should persist, adjust, step back, or seek help.
Fifth, it is long-lasting and free of weariness. The great practice revealed in the *Mahāvaipulya Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra* (*大方广佛华严经*, T279) is not a single good deed but an unbroken continuity of bodhisattva practice; even when wisdom and merit are highly accomplished, one does not abandon the bodhisattva's practice. Its "greatness" refers not only to the many objects and vast undertakings, but more fundamentally to the vastness of mind, the multiplicity of methods, and the continuity in time—not abandoning sentient beings merely because results are not immediately visible.
The deepest point of great practice lies in the "although knowing… still…" pattern (虽知……而……) displayed in the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra*: although knowing that no independent, permanent agent exists among all dharmas, one still does not negate the distinctions and functions of each dharma within dependent origination; although knowing that buddha-lands are like space, one still adorns the buddha-fields; although knowing that the dharmadhātu (法界, dharma-realm) is originally unmoving, one still manifests various transformations; although knowing that all dharmas are inexpressible, one still turns the pure dharma-wheel; although manifesting entry into great parinirvāṇa, one still manifests birth in all places.
This is not a logical contradiction; it is wisdom and skillful means operating simultaneously. On the side of wisdom, one does not grasp "I am saving people" or "this is my merit" as real; on the side of skillful means, one does not use "all is empty" as an excuse to evade responsibility. Precisely because of non-attachment, action need not revolve around self-justification; precisely because of understanding dependent origination, one takes every concrete condition more seriously. Great practice is therefore not a compromise between "entering the world" (入世) and "leaving the world" (出世); it is entering the world with supramundane wisdom and completing the path of liberation through engaged action.
The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* further unfolds the different faces of this vast practice through names such as "Samantabhadra's practice" (普贤行), "Samantabhadra's path" (普贤道), "buddha-karma" (佛业), and also the practice of the net of Indra (帝网行), the practice of universal wisdom's radiant light (普智光明行), the practice of the cloud of bodies (身云行), the practice of non-defilement (不染行), the practice of universal illumination (普照行), the practice of the great vow (大愿行), the practice of manifesting bodies (分身行), and the practice of the sun of wisdom (智日行). These names cannot simply be compressed into "doing more good deeds": their common direction includes drawing near to good spiritual friends (善知识), listening to the Dharma without satiety, cultivating all-knowledge (一切智), purifying merit and wisdom, deeply entering the ocean of vows and the ocean of skillful means, and cultivating Samantabhadra's path for all future time.
Checking in Daily Life
Imagine a common scenario: you are on the subway heading home after overtime, scrolling through your phone, and you see a colleague urgently asking for help in the group chat. A project has gone wrong, and part of the cause is the colleague's own carelessness; you are already exhausted, and the last time you helped him, you received no thanks.
The first step is arousing the mind (发心). You first discern: at this moment, do I want to prove I am capable, fear being blamed by the supervisor, or genuinely wish to reduce suffering for both of us and the team? Great practice does not require the motivation to be one hundred percent pure from the start, but it requires seeing the admixture and re-anchoring the direction in the benefit of self and other. This is the entrance from the "great support" to the "great practice."
The second step is gathering in, not possessing. You do not exclude him from your compassion because he was previously ungrateful; but "gathering in sentient beings" also does not mean taking over his life. You can reply: "I can spend twenty minutes now helping you locate the problem; after that, you will need to complete the fix yourself." The vow can be vast, but the immediate commitment must be genuine and respect boundaries.
The third step is to correct one's action through the pāramitās jointly. Sharing key information and experience is the aspect of giving (布施); not lying, not concealing risks, not elevating yourself by belittling a colleague is the aspect of ethical discipline (持戒); facing repeated communication without immediately becoming angry is the aspect of patience (忍); completing the reasonable help you have promised even while tired is the aspect of diligence (精进); not being continually dragged away by group messages, anxiety, and mental arguments is the aspect of concentration (定); seeing that the problem was caused by multiple people, processes, time pressure, and other conditions jointly—without pinning any single person down as a "troublemaker"—and choosing a genuinely effective approach is the aspect of wisdom (慧).
The easiest place to mis-map is understanding the pāramitās as a few external behaviors. Replying to a message is not necessarily giving; if it is meant to control the other person, help becomes relational debt. Patience is also not silently swallowing every unreasonable demand; sometimes clearly saying "no" and pushing to correct a flawed system actually reduces long-term harm more effectively. Diligence is even less equivalent to unlimited overtime; exhausting yourself to the point of snapping at your family the next day is not necessarily benefiting self and other.
The fourth step is facing what is difficult to do. The other person may still complain, and you may not have solved the problem. Great patience is not forcing yourself to feel nothing; it is not rewriting compassion into hostility upon frustration. You can acknowledge your exhaustion, pause the conversation, ask a more suitable person to step in, and still not essentialize the other person as "someone beyond saving." This is precisely the difference between "not abandoning sentient beings" (不舍众生) and "skillful means" (善巧方便): what is not abandoned is the vow, not any single fixed method.
The fifth step is contemplating emptiness while continuing to take responsibility. You know that "the I who helps," "the he who is helped," and "the merit of this help" are all temporarily established through many conditions, with no fixed, unchanging self-nature; yet you still check whether the information is accurate, whether the promise is fulfilled, and whether the action genuinely reduces suffering. This is the "although knowing… still…" pattern at the scale of daily life: although not grasping at a real merit, one still does not give up concrete responsibility.
The sixth step is dedication (回向, pariṇāmanā) and learning. After the matter has come to a close, do not indulge in "how kind I am," nor conclude from the limited result that "all help is useless." You look back at your own greed, aversion, and the boundaries of your abilities, adjust how you communicate next time, and wish that this small root of virtue serves not only personal self-evaluation but becomes a condition for yourself and others to move toward awakening. In this way, a response in one group chat may enter the direction of great practice.
The same applies to intimate relationships and parenting. Great practice is not taking on all of your partner's emotions, nor is it controlling a child with "this is for your own good"; it requires compassion extending to the other person, wisdom seeing the causes and conditions, discipline avoiding harm, patience bearing the setbacks of growth, and skillful means choosing expression according to the other's understanding and will. Helping a person is not just stuffing the correct answer into him—it is helping him gradually acquire the capacity to leave suffering.
Why Contemporary People Need It
Contemporary life easily pushes good intentions toward two extremes: on one end, apathy born of exhaustion—the world has too many problems, nothing an individual does matters; on the other end, anxious rescue—as if all problems must be solved by me immediately. Great practice loosens both knots at once.
It counters apathy with a vast vow: limited capacity does not mean that the suffering of others may be deleted from one's mind. It counters the savior complex with the wisdom of emptiness and skillful means: sentient beings each have complex causes and conditions, and there is no omnipotent, independent "I" that can unilaterally save everyone. Thus, the bodhisattva neither retreats into numbness nor inflates into a controller; he simply discerns, as things actually are, what can be done at hand, letting the vow continue and the methods renew.
Algorithmic life especially trains people to classify quickly: worth attention or not worth attention, one of us or an enemy, useful or useless. What great practice requires—"attention and compassion extending to all sentient beings"—does not mean agreeing with all viewpoints; it means refusing to compress any person completely into a label. Algorithms can help organize information, but they cannot perform the judgment of compassion and wisdom on one's behalf; scientific research on attention, emotion, and decision-making can offer useful observations, but these studies' methods, samples, and interpretations still have boundaries, and one cannot on that basis claim that science has already proven the Buddhadharma.
Great practice also offers a view of action not centered on immediate feedback. Platforms habitually measure value by likes, shares, and quantifiable results, but the bodhisattva's practice contains much work that is invisible and cannot be counted immediately: patient listening, restraining hurtful words, long-term care, correcting one's own biases, maintaining ethical conduct when no one applauds. The "immeasurable and constant" (无量、恒常) of great practice does not demand that ordinary beings produce infinite output; it frees action from being governed solely by immediate reward.
From the perspective of the entire path of liberation, the meaning of great practice is even more fundamental. It is not a checklist of tasks for accumulating credentials before becoming a buddha; it is itself the very site where afflictions transform into wisdom, self-grasping transforms into compassionate vows, and understanding transforms into life. Bodhicitta is strengthened through practice, merit and wisdom grow through practice, and one's understanding of emptiness is tested in the practice of benefiting others without dwelling on marks. The final "great fruit" is not withdrawing from sentient beings, but accomplishing the karma that broadly benefits them.
Common Misreadings and Clarifications
One: "Great practice means doing great undertakings."
Wrong. An undertaking can be vast in scale while its motive is merely fame, power, or self-expansion; a small matter known to no one may be held by bodhicitta, pure discipline, and the wisdom of not dwelling in marks. The "greatness" of great practice is first of all the vastness of its object, vow, cultivation, time, and skillful means—not its newsworthiness.
Two: "Benefiting others means sacrificing oneself."
Wrong. The *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* explicitly says one sets forth in practice "for the benefit of self and other" (为利自他而发行). Neglecting one's own discipline, concentration, wisdom, body, and capacities makes help unsustainable and even brings dependence, resentment, and control into relationships. Attending to boundaries is not abandoning sentient beings; the real question is whether boundaries are established by wisdom or by apathy and revenge.
Three: "Great practice is just doing good deeds in the ordinary sense."
Not quite accurate. Worldly good deeds are certainly valuable, but great practice is governed by bodhicitta, cultivates all the pāramitās universally, takes sentient beings' ultimate liberation from suffering and unsurpassed bodhi as its direction, and uses the wisdom of emptiness to avoid grasping at the three (agent, object, and act). One cannot erase its place in the path of liberation merely because the outward behavior looks similar.
Four: "Since all dharmas are empty, there are no sentient beings to save, and no need to act."
This mistakes emptiness for nihilism. The key point of the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* is precisely the "although knowing… still…" pattern: although contemplating that there is no person and no self, one still teaches sentient beings without weariness; although knowing that the dharmadhātu is originally unmoving, one still manifests skillful means. What emptiness destroys is the independent, permanent, graspable self-nature—not the suffering, responsibility, and function within dependent origination. If what one calls emptiness makes a person increasingly apathetic, it has at least not yet become the wisdom within great practice.
Five: "Not resting means one may never rest."
Wrong. "Without rest" (无有休息) emphasizes that the bodhisattva's practice and compassionate vow are not abandoned and do not regress—it is not encouraging disregard for the body or working day and night. If an ordinary person loses clarity and compassion through overexertion, rest, treatment, study, and stepping back to an appropriate position may all be necessary skillful means for sustaining great practice over the long term. One cannot narrow the vow and practice spanning vast eons in the scriptures into burnout within contemporary performance culture.
Six: "As long as the wish is grand, that is great practice."
Wrong. The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* emphasizes progressing from hearing, faith, and understanding to "cultivating as taught" (如说修行). The great vow must become repeatable action: studying the true Dharma, drawing near to good spiritual friends, taming afflictions, accumulating merit and wisdom, and applying skillful means according to the differing understanding and will of sentient beings. Merely declaring love for all sentient beings while continually harming those close to you shows that vow and practice have not yet been connected.
Seven: "Samantabhadra's practice, great practice, and buddha-karma are entirely the same fixed term."
This should not be said either. The *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* directly defines "great practice" as "setting forth for the benefit of self and other" and "pervasively practicing the wholesome roots intrinsic to all pāramitās"; the eighty-fascicle *Avataṃsaka* uses "great vow, great practice," "bodhisattva practice," "Samantabhadra's path," "Samantabhadra's practice," "buddha-karma," and other terms to jointly display this vast function. They are mutually resonant and illuminating in related contexts, but one cannot mechanically equate them apart from their respective scriptural usages.
The question great practice ultimately answers is not "how great a deed can I accomplish," but: "Having understood no-self, non-dwelling, and the emptiness of nature within dependent origination, am I still willing to seriously face the suffering of one concrete sentient being? After one failed attempt at help, can I still grow in wisdom without abandoning compassion?"
The vow touches ground here, and wisdom is tested here. The vastness of great practice is precisely hidden in this continuity that neither grasps nor retreats.
