「Purchasing blessed or consecrated religious merchandise guarantees safety, luck, and spiritual protection. Furthermore, the higher the price tag or donation for the blessed item, the stronger and more effective its spiritual power will be.」

It is completely understandable to seek peace of mind, protection for loved ones, or to express reverence through tangible sacred objects. Wanting a physical reminder of blessings comes from a good intention. However, this view becomes misleading when it treats spiritual blessings as commercial transactions. In Buddhism, true protection arises from one's own ethical conduct, purification of mind, and cultivation of virtue, not from a material price tag. Treating sacred items as guaranteed shields based on monetary cost confuses outer symbols with inner practice.

According to the scriptures, spiritual progress and protection rely on genuine practice rather than reliance on external charms or commercial gain. In the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra, the Buddha explains that an advanced practitioner (Avaivartika Bodhisattva) 'does not seek worldly auspiciousness as purification' and 'does not prioritize gain or profit'【Source 5】. Furthermore, protection described in sutras, such as by Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa in the Sovereign King of Golden Light Sutra, requires the practitioner to maintain a compassionate mind, abstain from anger, and practice virtue; merely possessing items without mental cultivation holds no efficacy【Source 3】.

You can say to your friend: 'It's wonderful that you care so much about seeking peace and blessings for your life! Sacred symbols can certainly remind us to stay mindful and kind. But in Buddhist teachings, true protection doesn't depend on how much an item costs. Real blessings come from our own good intentions, virtuous actions, and peaceful mind. Rather than spending a lot of money on expensive items, cultivating a compassionate heart and practicing daily kindness brings the strongest protection of all.'
