What This Concept Is Actually Saying

空想 (*śūnyatā-saṃjñā*, literally "emptiness-perception") is one of those technical Buddhist terms that gets quietly destroyed by translation before any analysis can begin. In modern Mandarin, the word 空想 means "daydream" or "idle fancy," and that false friend has been sitting in the path of careful reading for generations. The treatise we are drawing from — 《大乘莊嚴經論》(Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, T1604) — means something very specific and very different, and not one component of that meaning maps onto "daydreaming."

In the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, 空想 is not a noun-state ("the belief that things are empty"), not a verb-action ("to imagine emptily"), and not a metaphysical proposition ("emptiness itself is empty"). It is a transformed cognitive function — the perceptual-recognizing activity itself (想, *saṃjñā*), after it has been "turned" (轉, *zhuǎn*) by the realization of emptiness (空, *śūnyatā*). The treatise's own headline gātha sets up the dynamic in one line:

「如是空想轉,變化得增上。」 "Thus, when the emptiness-perception *undergoes its turning*, transformative power is augmented."

The term doing the heavy lifting is 轉 — "turning," a verbal, dynamic marker. The treatise's own commentary makes this explicit: 「轉空想變化」 — "the transformation that comes from *the turning of* the emptiness-perception." So 空想 names the function; 空想轉 names the function undergoing this turn; what is produced on the other side is the augmentation of transformative power. Nothing is being discarded. The recognizer-perceiver is being *revolved*.

Before we go further, three things this means *out*:

1. It is not meditation on emptiness. That would be 觀空 — observation *of* emptiness as object. The treatise explicitly insists that its specific term 空想轉 not be flattened into 觀空 or any generic "observing-emptiness." 2. It is not the cessation of cognition. The perceiver (想) is being transformed and finally *mastered* (想作自在成), not abolished. 3. It is not a beginner practice. It sits among the bodhisattva-vehicle descriptions of cognitive transformation *after* emptiness-insight has been actualized.

The First Half: Two Distinct Unobstructed Powers

The treatise is unusually precise here. Rather than a single vague outcome, it specifies two distinct results of 空想轉, each grounded in a distinct reason.

Power one: 「隨欲一切得」 — 「所欲皆得,得虛空藏故」 "Whatever one intends, one obtains — because one has gained the 虛空藏 (*xūkōng zàng*, the 'space-treasury')."

This concerns inward resource. The argument runs structurally: when the perceptual function (想) is no longer bifurcated by the rigid features "this is mine / that is not mine; this is accessible / that is blocked; this is real / that is illusion," then a kind of open register is in place — an inner "treasury," 虛空藏 — out of which what is needed can be drawn when needed. There is no obstruction of *attainment*.

Power two: 「所去皆無擁」 — 「所去皆無擁,得虛空解故」 "Wherever one goes, there is no obstruction — because one has gained the 虛空解 (*xūkōng jiě*, the 'space-liberation / space-understanding')."

This concerns outward passage. The text deliberately uses a different word: not 藏 ("treasury") but 解 ("liberation" / "understanding"). The asymmetry matters. 虛空藏 opens up the inward register; 虛空解 opens up the way through. The first has to do with what comes *to* you; the second with what goes *through* you. With 虛空解, the recognizer no longer fabricates the walls between itself and what it encounters. There is no obstruction of *passage*.

The treatise deliberately keeps these separate and gives each its own reason (故). They are two outputs of the same underlying 空想轉, but they are not the same output. A careful reader does not collapse them into one.

The Second Half: A Mode of Observation Rooted in Suchness-Wisdom

A second gātha-thrust re-describes the same turn, this time as a *mode of seeing* rather than as *powers produced*:

「緣彼真如智,觀察無異相。」 "Taking *tathatā-jñāna* (真如智, suchness-wisdom) as its object, it observes without establishing differences between features."
"Being and non-being are directly seen together."
"The function of perception achieves its mastery."

Here the object of observation is no longer the situation, the project, or the obstacle; it is 真如智, wisdom that knows suchness as it is. The result is 「觀察無異相」 — an observation that does not lay down the rigid split of feature against feature. Where most cognition reflexively says "this and not that, mine and not-mine, ally and threat," the emptiness-taken perception observes without the splits having already taken over. Then comes the most arresting line: 有非有現見 — "being" and "non-being" appear in the *same direct seeing* (現見, literally "manifest seeing"), not as a logical reconciliation but as a single field in which both poles are simultaneously present.

This is the same family of seeing that 《心經》 describes in its most famous line — 「色不異空,空不異色;色即是空,空即是色」 — form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form; form is emptiness, emptiness is form. (空想 as a term does not appear in the Heart Sutra; we are only noting that the realizational mode the Sutra describes and the mode 空想 describes are coordinates of the same family, which helps the contemporary reader feel what is being pointed at without claiming they are the same word.)

The passage concludes with 「想作自在成」 — the cognitive-perceptual function, no longer fractured by rigid distinctions, exercises its own unforced capability. This is *mastery*, not *absence*: the perceiver perceiving with full ease, no longer compressed by false fixities.

How the Two Halves Sit Together

So 空想 in this treatise has two complementary faces:

(A) A transformed cognitive function from which arise two unobstructed powers — unobstructed *attainment* (grounded in 虛空藏) and unobstructed *passage* (grounded in 虛空解).

(B) A mode of observation grounded in suchness-wisdom (真如智) that does not establish differences (無異相), sees being and non-being in one direct presentment (有非有現見), and brings the cognitive function to its natural mastery (想作自在成).

The treatise treats (A) and (B) as parallel descriptions of the same turn, both articulating a quality of freedom (自在). It does not, however, explicitly equate (B)'s 想作自在成 with (A)'s two specific powers, and a careful reading leaves that hinge open rather than collapsing it.

Conceptually, 空想 belongs to the broader Mahāyāna family of expressions about what happens when an ordinary cognitive faculty is revolved by emptiness-realization. It is in the same neighborhood as the most famous expression from 《金剛經》 — 「應無所住而生其心」, "the mind should be brought forth without abiding anywhere" — which likewise names a quality of mind that has let go of fixed abidings without losing its capacity to act. These are not identical concepts (空想 is a specific term about a specific mode of perception in one treatise; 應無所住 is a specific phrase about the operational posture of the mind in another), but they are siblings — the same family of post-realization cognitive capacity.

A Walk-Through in Contemporary Life

A baseline before we begin: every modern scenario below is a *parallel* to 空想, not 空想 itself. 空想 belongs to a specific doctrinal and contemplative context (the bodhisattva's cognitive transformation within Mahāyāna soteriology). What we can do in everyday conversation is point at the *shape* of what the concept describes, in contexts where contemporary readers recognize that shape, and gently show where common intuitions either map onto it or mis-map onto it.

Scene One: The Blocked Project

Imagine a designer working on a project that has gone stale. They've tried three approaches; each one hits the same wall; they have a fourth idea still in their head but something in their perceptual apparatus has *closed* around the conclusion: "this kind of project has these kinds of solutions, and we've exhausted them." The cognitive function that classifies — "this is the kind of project this is, this is the kind of solution that works for that kind of project, this is the kind of person I am as a designer" — has tightened into a closed loop. Nothing is reaching them. There is an obstruction of *attainment*: what is needed is not coming. There is also an obstruction of *passage*: every new idea hits the same wall on the way in, because the recognizer has already drawn the boxes before the idea arrives.

This is the 想 in its raw, unturned state — the recognizer running its habitual classification scheme, often without the agent noticing.

What we are calling 空想轉 here is the structural shape of what happens *when* this recognizer is revolved. Not abandoned — note the distinction; the treatise never asks us to throw the recognizer away. Rather, the rigid classification scheme loses its grip. A different colleague, a different framing question, a different sensory input from somewhere else in life — something interrupts the rigid scheme's automatic firing. The classification does not stop; it becomes *porous*. The boxes are still drawn, but lightly enough that what was blocked passes through them.

In that moment, two things tend to happen. First, resources appear that were not visible before — old skills, overlooked angles, surprising connections — because the inner register has opened. This is the structural shape of 虛空藏: not magical manifestation, but unobstructed attainment of what is needed once the percept has been revolved. Second, the designer takes this loosened state into the client meeting. Where before the walls of "this client will object to that," "this kind of objection means this kind of answer," were already erected on entry, now the conversation moves without that armor interposing. This is the structural shape of 虛空解: unobstructed passage through what is encountered.

Where the contemporary mapping goes wrong. The temptation here is to call this "confidence," "good mood," or — more fashionable — "creative visualization." None of these is 空想. The classic text grounds the turn explicitly in 真如智 being taken as object — wisdom that knows things as they are — not in affirmation or visualization. A designer who feels more confident but is still operating out of the same old categorization scheme has not undergone 空想轉; they have just had caffeine, or a good night's sleep. The shift the treatise describes is *deeper than mood*: it is the perceptual function itself being revolved at the level of its discriminating activity, because the reference-point of cognition has shifted to the wisdom that knows suchness.

Scene Two: Meeting a Person You Had Already Filed

A different shape — this one not about a project but about a person you have known for a long time. At some point you filed them. "She is the anxious one." "He is the indirect one." "They are the reliable one." You stopped really seeing them. The classifying function — 想 in its classical sense, the recognizer that takes up features and identifies — has solidified into a fixed mask. Worse: because the mask has been on for years, you have stopped noticing that you are wearing it. The mask just *is* how you see them.

One afternoon something interrupts the file. Maybe a context so different from the usual one that the standard labels do not apply; maybe they tell you something you've never heard; maybe you yourself are simply in a different state and the rigid feature-extraction pauses. For a stretch, you observe without the rigid feature-classification laying itself down first. You see: 「觀察無異相」 — observation without the layered splits. Not because you have decided to be non-judgmental — that decision would itself be another feature-extraction — but because the recognizer has, for a moment, lost its grip.

Two things now appear at once. First, you see the person as both the one you knew and the one you are only now seeing — 「有非有現見」, being and non-being directly presented together. They are *this*, they are also *not this* — both at once, not as a logical contradiction but as a single visible field in which both poles are present. (Note: this is not "they are different from how I thought" — that would still be the old recognizer, just running updated data. This is the moment in which the very split between "how I thought" and "how they actually are" loses its hold.) Second, your cognitive function, for the stretch of this seeing, is operating with remarkable ease. The perceiver is no longer compressed by the rigid mask; it perceives with full ease. 「想作自在成」 — the recognizer achieving its natural mastery.

Where the contemporary mapping goes wrong. The temptation is to call this "being present" or "mindfulness" in the modern pop sense, and to conclude that one has therefore approximated 空想. The classical source is more demanding. The turn specifically requires 真如智 being taken as object — wisdom that knows suchness as it is — not merely attentive awareness. There is a real difference between *being attentive to the content of one's filing system* and *having the filing system itself revolved by insight into the way things are*. Only the second is 空想轉. The first is most likely a calmer version of the very classifying activity 空想 is supposed to be turning.

Scene Three: The Daily Information Environment

A small experiment, briefly. Take the feed — news, social, recommendation systems, the whole stream. For most of us, the feed operates on a reflexive categorization that runs faster than we can notice: ally / enemy, in / out, safe / threat, true / false, shareable / not-shareable. The recognizer fires automatically; the world is filed before we have access to it. Three things are observable: obstruction of attainment (we cannot find what would actually nourish us in the stream), obstruction of passage (we cannot move through the stream without being picked apart or picked up by it), and a recognizer that is anything but masterful (it is exhausted, frantic, and constantly behind its own classifications).

Now imagine (this is the structural shape of 空想轉; we are not claiming to have brought it about in any durable way) that the recognizer briefly pauses its filing. Not into numbness — that is unconsciousness, not revolution. Not into suppression — that is willpower standing over the recognizer. Into a recognition that does not carve the stream into in-group and out-group at the speed of light. In that pause, the feed stops being a wall and starts being a stream. What is needed can be found. What is encountered can be passed through. The recognizer, briefly, is operating with ease rather than exhaustion.

Where the contemporary mapping goes wrong. The temptation is to call this "taking a break from social media." A break withdraws from the field; 空想轉 turns the recognizer *inside* the field. The cause specified by the text is 真如智 being taken as object — wisdom that knows suchness — not withdrawal from the world, not a calendar practice, not a "digital detox." Without that grounding, the very practice one uses to "take a break from" the field is still running on the same recognizer that 空想 is supposed to revolve.

Why Contemporary People Need This

A few coordinates.

The contemporary existential condition this concept names. Modern life is, in many respects, a runaway classification regime. Personality taxonomies (MBTI, Enneagram, the dozens of competitors), political tribes, content categories, recommendation algorithms, organizational charts, demographic identifiers, credential hierarchies. The classifying activity (想 in its classical sense) is no longer a helpful servant; it has become an unreflective master, and most of us run it without quite noticing we are running it. 空想 names what it looks like when this servant is revolved by insight rather than scrapped — and it offers a conceptual dignity to perception that most contemporary contemplative framings have quietly lost. The typical modern framing oscillates between over-identification with cognition ("just think harder, smarter, more strategically") and a quietist renunciation of thinking ("the mind is the problem, silence it"). 空想 names a third option: the perception itself, *mastered*, not by suppressing it but by revolving it. That third option is what many people are quietly hungry for.

The specific dimension 虛空藏 speaks to. Many contemporary anxieties take the form of "I won't have what I need" — not in the literal survival sense (usually), but in the social, creative, economic, recognition, attention sense. The 虛空藏 facet of 空想 turns the diagnosis around: the obstruction may not be where you think. It may not be a genuine scarcity at all. It may be the percept itself — the rigid classification that blocks what is actually available from being recognized. Once the percept is revolved, the inner register can open. (This is not "abundance thinking." It is a structural claim about the role of the recognizer in determining what reaches us.)

The specific dimension 虛空解 speaks to. The other side of contemporary social anxiety: "I cannot be with this kind of person / in this kind of context / through this kind of difference." The cultural air is full of such formulations, and they all presuppose that some categories genuinely cannot be passed through. The 虛空解 facet names the structural shape of unobstructed movement — not a denial of real difference, but the recognition that the *walls* between recognizer and world are partly artifacts of the recognizer itself. (This is not "everyone is the same." It is the recognition that the rigid feature-classification, by which some phenomena register as "incompatible with me," is doing more work than we credit.)

What contemplative and cognitive research has been circling. A few loosely adjacent findings, with caveats kept honest:

- *Predictive processing* models in cognitive neuroscience describe the brain as a hierarchy of classification-and-prediction systems whose constant work is to "file" incoming signals before they reach awareness. The "letting go of the model" — temporarily or systematically — is being studied in meditation research and (more controversially) in psychedelic-assisted therapy research. This is descriptive, not normative; and it is not at all the same as the Buddhist claim, which specifies a particular *cause* (真如智) for the turn. - *Cognitive flexibility* research consistently finds that rigid categorizers cope worse with novelty, recover less well from setbacks, and readier generate learned helplessness. Empirically, the well-being costs of rigid classification are visible. But flexibility-training produces a more *nimble* classifier, not a revolved one. Only the same recognizing activity, running faster. - *Flow-state* research (Csikszentmihalyi and successors) has mapped the conditions under which conscious categorization loosens; in flow, the agent acts without self-conscious feature-extraction interrupting the action. The phenomenological shape of flow loosely echoes 虛空解 — unobstructed passage — but flow does not entail the *grounding* in suchness-wisdom that the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra specifies. Flow can be had without 空想轉, and 空想轉 does not require flow's specific reward-circuit signature.

The Buddhist claim in the treatise is precise: the cause specified for the turn is 真如智, the realization of suchness. Without that, no amount of cognitive flexibility training, flow-state cultivation, or predictive-model "letting go" produces 空想轉; one only becomes more nimble at the very classifying activity 空想 is *turning*. The contemporary usefulness of knowing this concept is partly that it gives us a richer vocabulary for what is actually missing in our perceptual life — not a better classification system, but the revolved recognizer that can move through any system.

Common Misreadings and Clarifications

1. "空想 means daydream." The modern Mandarin false friend. In this technical context, 空想 means the cognitive function (想) informed by emptiness (空), specifically *after* the turn (轉). Daydreaming is the unregulated activity of imagination unconstrained by wisdom. 空想 is the recognizer revolved *by* wisdom. Different operations.

2. "空想 means 'emptiness is itself empty' (the nihilistic reading)." No. The treatise never makes a self-referential "emptiness of emptiness" claim. It says: when perception is revolved by emptiness, transformative power is augmented. The augmentation claim is thoroughly affirmative; nothing is being cancelled. The emptiness is the *turning medium*, not a proposition about itself.

3. "空想 means 'don't think.' " No. 想作自在成 is mastery of the perceptual function, not its abolition. The classical conflation in some transmission contexts is to read "non-conceptual" as "no-cognition" and then to map 空想 onto it. But the treatise's term for the goal of this turn is *mastery*, not absence. The recognizer is revolved, revolved, and finally at ease — which is a description of cognition at full capacity, not cognition extinguished.

4. "虛空藏 and 虛空解 are the same." No. The treatise is unusually careful to keep them distinct. 虛空藏 grounds "what is needed, obtained" — unobstructed *attainment*. 虛空解 grounds "where one goes, no obstruction" — unobstructed *passage*. Different mechanisms. Both unobstructed. Both arising from 空想轉. But not collapsing into one.

5. "想作自在成 is the same as unobstructed attainment." The treatise ends the observation passage with 想作自在成 but does not state that this is identical to either 虛空藏 or 虛空解. A careful reader leaves that hinge open — let (A)'s two powers and (B)'s mastery sit as parallel facets, each described in its own register.

6. "空想轉 is just 'meditate on emptiness.'" No. The treatise specifies that its term 空想轉 should not be flattened into 觀空. 觀空 would be a specific mental activity directed at emptiness-as-object. 空想 is the perceptual function *as such*, after it has been revolved by emptiness. Related, but distinct; the treatise insists on the distinction.

7. "This is a beginner practice." Unlikely. 空想 in the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra sits in the neighborhood of bodhisattva-vehicle descriptions of cognitive transformation after emptiness-realization. It describes what has already been turned, not what a beginner is reaching toward. Aspiring toward it is one thing. Treating it as a starting exercise misreads the level at which it operates.

8. "This is 'creative visualization' / manifestation." The contemporary pop frame of "I visualize therefore it becomes" shares a surface vocabulary with 空想 (imagining, attainment, unobstructed). But the cause specified by the text is 真如智 — wisdom that knows suchness — not affirmation, not visualization, not emotion. Without that grounding, the contemporary practice is operating on the *same* recognizer that 空想 is supposed to be turning — only with that recognizer untouched. The results of one are not the results of the other, even if both involve imagination.

A closing observation

The thing that strikes me most about 空想, on a steady re-reading, is its quiet gentleness with the cognitive function itself. Most of the contemplative vocabulary we have inherited treats cognition as either a tool to be sharpened or an obstacle to be stilled. 空想 says neither. It says: the recognizer is revolved by the realization of what is so, and then it does what it always wanted to do, but did not have the room to do — recognize without compressing, perceive without file-drawing, see being and non-being in one field. The dignity is in the cognition, not in its diminishment.

For anyone trying to find their way between the contemporary poles — over-identification with the classifying mind and quietism about it — 空想 is a useful third coordinate. Not as a practice one can compel, but as a description of what one is actually cultivating, slowly, when one stops sharpening the files and starts loosening them.
