What This Concept Is About
In the cognitive experience of modern people, "learning" and "growth" often mean a kind of acquired augmentation: by absorbing knowledge, training skills, and cultivating the mind, we try to move ourselves from a state of lack and confusion gradually into a wiser, more integrated person.
But in Mahāyāna Buddhism—especially in the tathāgatagarbha (如來藏, "womb of the Thus-Gone One") approach represented by the *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* (《大佛頂首楞嚴經》)—the fundamental assumptions about "liberation" and "wisdom" are diametrically opposed. It makes an extremely startling underlying judgment: within the self-nature of all sentient beings there is already, fully and completely present, an awareness that is unborn and undying, permanent and indestructible, pure and luminously clear. This inherently complete awareness is called original enlightenment (本覺, prakṛti-prabhāsvaratā, "original enlightenment").
One-sentence definition: original enlightenment refers to the pure awareness that is inherently complete in the self-nature of sentient beings, unborn and undying, and permanently uninterrupted.
To understand "original enlightenment" accurately, one must clarify the core structure built around it in the classical scriptures and treatises. One must not fudge it with modern psychological or popular-general terms:
1. Neither Causal nor Natural: An Absolute Existence Beyond Worldly Oppositions
Every phenomenon we can encounter in the secular world is either born from the "combination of causes and conditions" (因緣和合; e.g., a seed plus sunlight and water grows into a tree, or various items of knowledge and experience recombine to form a new idea), or is attributed to the inherent property of being "spontaneous and natural" (e.g., water flows downhill).
But the *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* states explicitly that original enlightenment is "neither of causal nor of natural nature" (非因緣非自然性) [11524].
- It is not born of causes and conditions: it is by no means a product "created" through later sitting meditation, contemplation, cultivation, or the accumulation of knowledge. If original enlightenment were cultivated into being, that would mean it has a point in time when it "arises"; and since it arises, there must necessarily come a day when it "ceases." - Nor is it "natural": it is not a lifeless pattern that falls out of the void without cause or condition. Its "source of awareness" (覺元, the origin of awakening) does not depend for its existence on any conditioned or unconditioned relationship in the world [11524].
It is the unborn-and-undying nature that sentient beings inherently possess. Even as we revolve through the six realms (六道, ṣaḍgati) and undergo birth-and-death transformations for countless kalpas—the body ages and decays, deluded thoughts arise and vanish in flight—this "pure original mind" and "original enlightenment" have never been diminished in the slightest; they remain permanently present and indestructible [11524].
2. "Nature-Awareness Wondrously Bright, Original Enlightenment Bright and Wondrous": The Pure Relationship of Substance and Function
The sūtra text depicts the content of original enlightenment in language of extreme rigor, where each phrase mirrors the other—"the nature of awareness is wondrously bright; original enlightenment is bright and wondrous" (性覺妙明,本覺明妙) [11858].
- Nature-aware and wondrously bright (性覺妙明): from the perspective of the "nature of awareness" (substance, 體), awareness itself is a subtle luminosity that leaves no trace. - Original enlightenment, bright and wondrous (本覺明妙): from the perspective of the "substance of original enlightenment" (function, 用), the substance of original enlightenment is itself luminous and subtle.
In this state, "awareness" and "luminosity" are fused into one whole; there is no opposition between seeing and being seen, knowing and being known. The sūtra also calls it "original enlightenment, wondrously bright" (本覺妙明) or "the bright mind of original enlightenment" (本覺明心) [11524, 11977].
3. "Setting Up Knowledge Upon Knowledge Is the Root of Ignorance": How Does Original Enlightenment Evolve a World Through Subtle Deluded Movement?
Since original enlightenment is originally pure and complete, where do the suffering of the world, saṃsāra, and the receptacle world (器世間, bhājana-loka) come from?
The *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* reveals an extremely subtle evolutionary process of mind-only (唯識, vijñapti-mātra) and the nature of mind: in the pure state of "nature-aware and wondrously bright; original enlightenment, bright and wondrous," awareness is inherently self-luminous. However, if on top of this pure awareness one "wishes to give rise to a subject that illuminates and perceives" (what the sūtra calls "that which is illuminated is nothing other than the establishment of illumination" [所明無他,建立夫明], or "awareness upon illumination" [有明明覺]), a crisis is born [11858].
The moment one tries to "add another act of perceiving" on top of awareness, the originally pure and undivided knowing is instantly split into a subject (the perceiver) and an object (the perceived) [11858]. This subtle deluded movement produces clinging and entanglement; awareness degenerates into deluded thought, which then evolves into the "six sense faculties" (六根, ṣaḍ-indriya) of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind; the "six sense objects" (六塵, ṣaḍ-viṣaya) of form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and mental objects; and even the vast, complex receptacle world of mountains, rivers, and the great earth [11858, 11869].
4. "Awareness of Conditions Is Not an Eye Disease": When Sunk in Confusion, Original Enlightenment Remains Undamaged
This is the most consoling and subversive point in the teaching of original enlightenment. The sūtra says: "The bright mind of original enlightenment, aware of conditions, is not an eye disease" (本覺明心覺緣非眚) [11524]. ("眚" refers to an eye affliction, a pathological condition.)
The meaning is: even if sentient beings are now in the midst of extremely severe anxiety, inversion, and clinging, blown about by the wind-force of various delusive conditions, that "bright mind of original enlightenment" which can perceive all of this has not contracted any eye disease; its substance has never been polluted in the slightest [11524].
Just as the sky is covered by dark clouds—clouds may gather densely and even pour down rain, yet the sky itself is never stained wet or torn apart; or just as gold ore, though mixed with sand and mud before refining, has a physical and chemical nature that never changes within the mud.
In the fruition stage or perfected state, it is called the "jewel-awareness true mind" (寶覺真心) or the "jewel-awareness, perfectly bright, true, wondrous, pure mind" (寶覺圓明真妙淨心) [11862]. The sūtra states categorically that sentient beings and all Buddhas and Tathāgatas are "each perfectly complete," without duality or difference, in the "jewel-awareness true mind" [11862]. The reason sentient beings have not yet manifested it is solely that they are wrapped in "defiling toil and deluded thought" (塵勞妄想); the completeness of their substance has not been reduced by half a fraction [11862].
5. The Place of Original Enlightenment in the Entire Path of Liberation
In the coordinate system of the entire path of liberation, "original enlightenment" is both the end point and the starting point (that is, the unity of the "mind of the causal ground" and the "awakening of the fruition ground").
If liberation required establishing from scratch something that did not originally exist, then such liberation would be impermanent. Precisely because "original enlightenment" is inherently complete, the essence of practice is no longer "seeking outward" or "building something new," but rather "removing obscuration" and "returning."
As the sūtra summarizes the path of return: "When the sense faculties and sense objects dissolve away, and one no longer follows the various conditioned marks, then awareness-luminosity naturally restores its round and wondrous substance" (根塵銷落,不循諸有為相,則覺明自然恢復其圓妙之體) [11869]. As long as one no longer chases after all the conditioned, arising-and-ceasing false appearances of the world, the obscuration is removed, and the luminosity of original enlightenment naturally reveals itself in full [11869].
A Walkthrough in Daily Life
To avoid misunderstanding "original enlightenment" as some kind of abstruse philosophical concept, let us walk through it step by step, following the structure of the classical sūtra, in a scene with which modern people are extremely familiar—"scrolling through one's phone late at night and irritability from overtime work."
Scene: 2 a.m., exhausted after overtime, lying in bed scrolling short videos
- The opening move: subtle deluded movement and "awareness upon illumination": You have just returned home from overtime work, and your body is extremely tired. In that moment, there is actually an extremely pure, acute perception of "knowing that you are tired." But immediately afterward, the mind moves subtly: "I've had it so rough; I'm so tired today; I have to do something to relax (giving rise to the split between a perceiving subject 'one who' and an object 'what is perceived')." This is the arising of "awareness upon illumination" (有明明覺) within "nature-aware and wondrously bright" [11858]. You are trying to build, on top of the pure perception, a "subject that goes looking for stimulation/relaxation."
- The construction of the wind-force of delusive conditions and the receptacle world (forms): Next, you open your phone. The algorithms in the short-video app push funny sketches, consumerist advertisements, and anxiety-inducing news. Your eye faculty locks onto the screen (forms, 色塵), and your ear faculty takes in sounds (聲塵). As the sūtra teaches, all these appearances of worlds and beings are "turned by the wind-force of delusive conditions" (妄緣風力所轉) [11977]. The information stream in the videos (delusive conditions) sweeps your thoughts along like a violent wind: one moment you are angry, the next you are laughing wildly, the next you feel a shopping impulse.
- Obscuration by defiling toil and "pathological deluded perception": You scroll until 3 a.m. Your eyes are sore, your head is numb, and your heart is filled with emptiness, self-blame, and anxiety: "I have to get up early tomorrow. How did I lose control again? I'm such a useless person." At this point, you are deeply sunk in "defiling toil and deluded thought" [11862]. You have completely taken the false appearances on the screen and the arising-and-ceasing anxiety in your mind (deluded thought) as the real "me."
- The crucial revelation: right now, where is your "original enlightenment"? Most people mis-map this point most easily: they think that only when they calm down, sit in meditation, enter concentration, and are free of stray thoughts does that state count as "original enlightenment"; and that in the present anxious, out-of-control, phone-scrolling self, "original enlightenment" has been lost or damaged. The hard-hitting point of the classical scriptural meaning is precisely revealed here: When you feel extremely anxious at 3 a.m. and are looking at the phone screen, has that awareness which "knows that you are anxious," that which "clearly sees the light of the phone," been polluted by anxiety? Anxiety is an arising-and-ceasing psychological phenomenon (the aggregate of formations, 行蘊 / the aggregate of feeling, 受蘊); the light of the phone is an arising-and-ceasing physical phenomenon (form, 色塵). But that "awareness-nature" which can "illuminate" and "perceive" the anxiety and the light—it itself is neither anxious nor luminous [11524]. This is precisely "the bright mind of original enlightenment, aware of conditions, is not an eye disease" (本覺明心覺緣非眚) [11524]! Even if you have fallen into the deepest mire of afflictions, that "substance of awareness" which can perceive suffering is like sunlight shining on a garbage heap: the garbage stinks, but the sunlight is never polluted in the slightest. Your original enlightenment has been there all along, without any diminishment [11524].
- The method of return: the dissolution of sense faculties and sense objects When you suddenly realize this, you no longer continue acting out the logic of "I'm so anxious, I need to watch one more video" (not following the various conditioned marks, 不循諸有為相). You place the phone face-down on the table and close your eyes. In the moment your eyes leave the screen (the instant the sense faculty and sense object separate), those plots, products, and anxieties that just had you spellbound vanish like smoke. "When the sense faculties and sense objects dissolve away, and one no longer follows the various conditioned marks, then awareness-luminosity naturally restores its round and wondrous substance" [11869]. You settle back into that pure awareness which does not arise and cease with the short videos, which does not arise and cease with anxiety.
Why Contemporary People Need It
Contemporary life places extreme value on "addition" and "construction." The training we receive from childhood is: you are not perfect now; you need to earn higher degrees, accumulate more wealth, build a more perfect physique, and gather more connections before you can become a "person of value." When this logic is carried into the spiritual realm, it turns into frantic "mental anxiety"—people continually attend various psychological therapies, meditation check-ins, and spiritual trainings, trying to "cultivate" a strong inner mind.
Yet this logic based on "lack—augmentation" often leads to a deeper exhaustion: If you believe that wisdom and peace are "cultivated" later in life, then you will constantly worry that they will "leak away" or "regress." Today you meditate for twenty minutes and feel great; tomorrow you lose emotional control at work, and you fall into self-blame: "I've regressed again."
The teaching of "original enlightenment" has an extremely striking detoxifying function in the contemporary era:
1. The ultimate anchor for breaking through the "sense of spiritual lack": Original enlightenment tells you that at the most fundamental level, you are already complete (each one perfectly complete) [11862]. You do not need to go into the external world to "earn" your self-nature, nor do you need to "beg" wisdom from any master. Your suffering, anxiety, and confusion are only clouds in the sky; they are not the sky itself. This recognition can instantly rescue a person from the chronic inferiority and mental attrition of "I am not good enough."
2. Redefining the "view of self" (in dialogue with contemporary AI and brain science): In the contemporary era, brain science attempts to explain human consciousness as "a combination of electrical signals in brain neurons" (the evolution of neural networks); AI technology, through massive data training, simulates extremely lifelike linguistic and logical responses. This has triggered an existential crisis in contemporary people: Are we just a complex biological computer? Is our consciousness just a product of algorithms and electrical signals? - The comparison between original enlightenment and contemporary science, and the revelation of their limits: What brain science studies—"memory, emotion, reflex, cognition"—is, from the Buddhist perspective, at most the reflection of the "six sense objects" upon the "six sense faculties," belonging to the arising-and-ceasing "deluded thought" and "defiling toil" [11862]. What contemporary brain science excels at observing is the objectified phenomena of consciousness (electrical signals measurable by instruments); what "original enlightenment" points to is that awareness-substance which is able to perceive all these electrical signals, able to sense "existence itself." Science can explain how the brain processes data (which is precisely like the operation of algorithms and wind-force) [11977], but science to this day cannot explain the "sensory quality of subjective experience" (what philosophy calls the Hard Problem of Consciousness). The teaching of original enlightenment is rooted precisely here: awareness-nature is not a by-product of material evolution; it is an absolute substance that transcends the combination of causes and conditions [11524]. Understanding original enlightenment allows contemporary people, in an age pressed upon by algorithms and technology, to reconfirm the dignity in human nature that is most irreplaceable by machines and least subject to the perishing of matter.
3. It offers an extremely light view of practice: Practice is no longer "clenching one's teeth to fight against one's bad self," nor is it "forcibly scrubbing the mind clean." Practice is simply "recognizing original enlightenment" and "no longer mistaking a thief for one's father." When you understand that afflictions are only illusions "turned by the wind-force of delusive conditions" [11977], you no longer need to "kill" afflictions; you only need to not follow them (not following the various conditioned marks), let the sense faculties and sense objects dissolve naturally, and the luminosity of original enlightenment naturally manifests [11869].
Common Misreadings and Clarifications
Because the concept of "original enlightenment" is extremely vast and points directly at the root, it is极易 in modern dissemination to be abused or misunderstood. Below are several of the most typical misreadings and the clarifications from classical doctrine:
Misreading 1: "Since my original enlightenment is inherently complete and equal to the Buddha, I don't need to do anything at all; even reckless wrongdoing is original enlightenment." (Falling into a soul-theory or annihilationist emptiness)
- Clarification: This is the extremely dangerous error of "clinging to principle while discarding phenomena" (執理廢事). Although the *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* says that sentient beings and Buddhas are "each perfectly complete" in the jewel-awareness true mind [11862], the sūtra simultaneously devotes a great deal of space to analyzing how sentient beings are entangled by "defiling toil and deluded thought" [11862]. To use an analogy: a gold mine does indeed contain nothing but gold (original enlightenment), but the ore is still buried in thick mud and sand (deluded thought and karmic force). If you took unrefined ore and tried to buy things with it as pure gold, you would only be taken for a madman. "Original enlightenment" is the completeness of "principle-identity with Buddhahood" (理即佛) or "inherent possession" (性具); but on the level of phenomenal marks (事相), sentient beings, because of subtle deluded movement, have long established a solid subject-object opposition and karmic inertia [11858]. If one does not remove the obscuration through "the dissolution of sense faculties and sense objects," strict observance of pure precepts, and deep meditative observation, original enlightenment will forever remain only "the sky covered by dark clouds," and you will continue to feel real suffering of saṃsāra within illusions [11869].
Misreading 2: Equating "original enlightenment" with psychology's "subconscious," "self," or brain science's "brain awareness."
- Clarification: This is a typical case of "fudging through term-matching." - Subconscious/unconscious: The subconscious of which depth psychology (e.g., Freud, Jung) speaks is still a psychological sediment shaped by personal history, racial memory, and experiential causes and conditions. In Buddhist mind-only theory it belongs to the category of the "storehouse consciousness" (阿賴耶識, ālayavijñāna); it is the arising-and-ceasing, causally-conditioned "aggregate of formations" (行蘊) and "aggregate of consciousness" (識蘊), and is by no means the "neither causal nor natural" original enlightenment [11524]. - Brain awareness: The awareness of which brain science speaks depends on the cerebral cortex, neurotransmitters, and organ function; it is entirely a product of "causes and conditions." If the brain is damaged, awareness changes or is lost. Original enlightenment, by contrast, is that which is "not belonging to combination or non-combination" (覺元不屬和合與不和合) [11524]; it does not depend on the existence or destruction of biological organs.
Misreading 3: Misunderstanding "original enlightenment" as some kind of deified "Great Self" (Brahman) or an idealist creator god.
- Clarification: Many people, upon hearing that "original enlightenment gives rise to the receptacle world" [11858], assume that original enlightenment created the world the way God creates things. The classical scriptures have an extremely strict definition of this: original enlightenment is absolutely not a creator. The world appears not because original enlightenment "actively creates," but because a single subtle deluded movement arises on awareness ("awareness upon illumination") [11858]. This deluded movement is like an eye that develops a cataract (a pathological condition): looking at the sky, one sees wild flowers falling. The substance of original enlightenment is "apart from all marks"; it is neither born of causes and conditions nor is it natural [11524]. It does not posit a subject, nor does it preside over all things. It is pure awareness that transcends the opposition of subject and object.
Misreading 4: "Original enlightenment" is an extremely blissful, luminous state "produced" after practicing to the highest level.
- Clarification: If original enlightenment were "produced" by practice, it would become a "conditioned dharma" (因緣法) and would necessarily undergo "arising, abiding, change, and ceasing." The sūtra repeatedly emphasizes that original enlightenment is "not causal" (非因緣) [11524]. Practice is not about "fabricating" original enlightenment, nor about "cultivating a light"; it is "ceasing is bodhi" (歇即菩提). The fantastic lights you see in meditation and the extreme bliss you feel still belong to the categories of "form" (色塵) or the "aggregate of feeling" (受蘊); they are arising-and-ceasing illusions. The true original enlightenment is that absolute awareness which "can see light and can also see darkness; can perceive pleasure and can also perceive pain, but is itself neither light nor darkness, neither pleasure nor pain" [11524]. Not clinging to any conditioned mark, awareness-luminosity naturally restores its original face [11869].
