一、這個概念在說什麼
1. 在解脫這張地圖上的位置
You hear "解脫 (vimukti, liberation)" and you imagine a single destination. The 瑜伽部 materials put a finer knife to it. 煩惱解脫 is the liberation that comes specifically from permanently cutting off the afflictions themselves — not from the suffering, not from the karmic consequences, not from any existential condition. The text literally names it after the rope, not the prison.
This is the structural move. The 《瑜伽師地論》(Yogācārabhūmi) sets 煩惱解脫 alongside 事解脫 (liberation with respect to phenomena: 「即於此無染」, being unblemished in the actual situation); the 《雜集論》(Abhidharmasamuccaya) sets it alongside 苦解脫 (liberation from suffering). Both pairings point the same direction: 煩惱解脫 is the liberation of the binding, while its partner is the liberation of the result of the binding. The deepest work is the first.
The 雜集論 also phrases this through the Four Noble Truths structure: 煩惱解脫 is the 永斷相 (aspect of permanent cessation) of the Second Truth, while 苦解脫 is the 作證相 (aspect of direct realization) of the Fourth Truth. The text says explicitly: 「永斷相、作證相各有二種差別,謂煩惱解脫、苦解脫」— the two phases are paired but distinct.
In East Asian Buddhism, the most familiar canonical echo of this whole project is the bodhisattva vow 「煩惱無盡誓願斷」 — "I vow to cut the inexhaustible afflictions." A very well-known classic that names the uncutting (rather than the cutting) is the opening of the 《心經》 (Heart Sūtra) — 「照見五蘊皆空,度一切苦厄」 — where the dissolution of the five aggregates is the *condition* under which the cutting of 煩惱 becomes visible. But 煩惱解脫 itself, as a technical term, lives mostly in the 瑜伽部 literature and not in a single line as famous as those.
2. 什麼叫「煩惱」—— 不只是負面情緒
To understand what 煩惱解脫 means, we have to understand what 煩惱 (kleśa) is, in this technical frame. The 雜集論 names the three poisons — greed, hatred, delusion (貪瞋癡) — as 隨煩惱心法 (afflictive mental factors that follow and afflict the mind). The formula is uncompromising: 「由此隨煩惱隨惱於心,令不離染、令不解脫、令不斷障」— because these factors follow the mind and afflict it, the mind does not leave defilement, does not liberate, does not cut off obstacles.
This is not a moralizing vocabulary. 煩惱 is a structural feature — certain mental factors that cling to the mind and prevent it from being free. The mind cannot liberate itself through willpower alone, because the very instrument of will is being ridden by these factors. Hence the work of liberation is not "decide to be good" — it is a gradual realignment of the field.
3. 繫縛的機制:兩套並存的比喻
The 雜集論 does not give one metaphor for the binding; it gives two interlocking systems, each preserved here with its one-to-one mapping.
Three gates (三門) — all grounded in 貪瞋癡, but each showing a different facet:
- 暴流 (floods, ogha) — 「隨順雜染」, sweeping along with defilement. Driven by 無明顛倒 (the inversion of ignorance), which keeps misreading the direction of liberation. Even the very *pursuit* of liberation and its methods can be flowing along the flood. The mind is not just drifting; it is streaming in a direction it mistakes for upstream. - 軛 (yokes, yuva) — 「障礙離繫」(blocking untying), 「違背清淨」(against purity). The yoke is the structural barrier, the shape of the harness that prevents escape. Not the active sufferer, but the very configuration that makes escape impossible. - 取 (graspings, ādāna) — 「執取諍根,執取後有」, seizing the roots of dispute and, more profoundly, the "future-becoming" — the continuity of self that persists. Not just clinging to this or that object, but to the very idea of a continuant.
Six gates (六門) — same 貪瞋癡 as essential body, but each face manifested:
- 熱 (heat) — 依三毒燒惱身心. The three poisons literally burn body and mind. Somatic, immediate. - 惱 (distress/grief) — 於可樂事愛著變壞增愁嘆. The pleasant things we love change and decay, the heart laments. Future-oriented emotional weight. - 諍 (conflict) — 執持刀杖興鬪諍. Picking up weapons and joining fight. Social-conflictual face. - 熾然 (blazing) — 為非法貪、邪法大火所燒. Burned by unwholesome greed and the great fire of wrong view. Ideological/ethical dimension — not just burning, but blazing with misplaced conviction. - 稠林 (thicket) — 於生死根本廣興染著如稠林難出. Densely attached to the roots of saṃsāra, like a forest impossible to exit. Massed, accumulated, hard to navigate. - 拘礙 (confinement) — 顧戀身財不得自在修善. Clinging to body and wealth, unable to freely cultivate good. The cage made of the very conditions that support life.
These are not interchangeable labels. Each illuminates a different facet. The classical writer is essentially saying: the binding has these specific faces, and liberation must address each — not just one.
4. 切斷的過程:五階段
The 瑜伽師地論 gives the actual lived sequence of how 煩惱解脫 unfolds:
「由正定而如實知,由如實知而厭患,由厭患而離染,由離染而得解脫。」
Five movements, packed tight:
1. 正定 (right concentration) — the mind is gathered, single-pointed, steady. Not yet liberated, but no longer scattered. 2. 如實知 (knowing as it really is) — from the stilled mind, reality is seen as it actually is. Not as the afflictions have been advertising it. 3. 厭患 (disenchantment, turning-away) — from clear seeing, the natural response is weariness. The candy doesn't look like candy anymore. 4. 離染 (separation from defilement) — the weariness becomes a genuine, irreversible distancing. 5. 解脫 (liberation) — the fetters are cut.
This is not a decision. It is a natural sequence: stillness enables seeing, seeing produces disenchantment, disenchantment produces genuine distance, and distance IS liberation. The text warns that the mind is naturally restless — 「心長夜愛樂憒鬧與五欲」, the mind loves hustle and the five desires by long habit. Even a 聖弟子 (noble disciple) placed in 善法 (good dharmas) or 內寂止 (inner stillness) finds the mind re-arising greed, hatred, delusion, restlessness, and lack of calm. Sitting the mind down is half the work.
A practical note: the text does not say these are sequential steps climbed once. The mind cycles, re-enters, sometimes slips back to 熱 after reaching 厭患. The trajectory is iterative, more spiral than ladder.
5. 兩個層次:纏 vs 隨眠
A crucial sub-distinction in the 瑜伽師地論: 煩惱 has a manifest surface and a latent root.
- 纏 (paryavasthāna, manifest afflictions) — the active, surface flare-ups. The anger that flares, the greed that grabs, the delusion that confuses right now. - 隨眠 (anuśaya, latent afflictions) — the dormant predispositions underneath. The patterns that sit quietly but condition the next flare-up.
The text maps these to two kinds of cutting:
- 纏斷 — cutting the manifest. Real but partial. - 隨眠斷 — cutting the latent. The deeper, more demanding work. - 離繫斷 (complete untying) — and this is identified as 隨眠斷.
A practitioner who has cut 纏 still has 隨眠 awaiting. A practitioner who has cut 隨眠 has a stable, irreversible liberation. The 隨眠斷 is what defines full 煩惱解脫.
There is also a directional analysis: - 從相應說斷 — because the right mental factors have arisen, the afflictions don't arise. A positive reading. - 從所緣說斷 — because the cognitive object no longer operates, the affliction has no ground. A negative reading.
Both are valid; they describe the same cutting from two sides.
And a stage analysis: - 見斷 (cut by the path of seeing) — sudden, by 現觀智 (direct insight). Hits the gross views. - 修斷 (cut by the path of cultivation) — gradual, by 修道 (repeated practice). Mops up the subtler, habitual patterns.
In the language of East Asian Buddhism, these are often called 見惑 (delusions of view) and 思惑 (delusions of thought) — the same two-stage mapping, in different idiom. Both are required for full 煩惱解脫.
6. 兩種說法:轉依 vs 離繫
The 雜集論 specifies two technical terms for the realization itself, and ties them to the corresponding liberation:
- 轉依 (āśrayaparāvṛtti, transformation of basis) — for 煩惱解脫. The "basis" (依), the substrate on which mind rides, is transformed. Structural change — not just behavior change, but the very ground on which experience stands is different. - 離繫 (visaṃyoga, untying) — for 苦解脫. The binding is released.
So 煩惱解脫 = 轉依 (transformed basis); 苦解脫 = 離繫 (untied). This is more than jargon. It tells you that the deepest claim of 煩惱解脫 is not "the rope is loose" but "the place where the rope was tied is no longer the same place." Every copy of the experience now happens on different ground.
The 瑜伽師地論 complements this with 「離繫斷」 and 「隨眠斷」 used interchangeably — the same idea, but framed as the untying of the binding.
7. 解脫後的樣子:四種心解脫果
The 瑜伽師地論 gives a behavioral fingerprint of 煩惱解脫 in four forms:
1. 貪瞋縛解脫 — the bonds of greed and hatred are released. 2. 欲貪滅斷出離 — desire-greed's cessation and exit. (Note: 雜集論 uses the word 出離 more centrally — "出離 is where greed is permanently extinguished, greed is permanently cut, greed is gone beyond, 永滅、永斷、超過貪欲故.") 3. 九結離繫 — the nine knots are untied. The "nine knots" (九結) are the deep structural fetters named in Abhidharma tradition — 隨眠 in developed, woven form. 4. 生等諸苦解脫 — liberation from birth and the suffering that follows.
The text is explicit: the first three are 因處煩惱解脫 (cause-side affliction liberation); the last is 果處諸苦解脫 (result-side suffering liberation). The four-fruit list is itself a map showing the boundary: 煩惱解脫 names the cutting, 苦解脫 names the healing.
The behavioral signature given is deceptively simple: 「眼見色乃至意知法,皆不喜不憂,住於捨、正念正知」 — eye seeing form, ear hearing sound, mind knowing dharma, neither delighted nor distressed, dwelling in equanimity (捨), with right mindfulness and right knowledge.
The 瑜伽師地論 also adds the specific skills of having cut the 隨煩惱 (the secondary afflictive factors): 「於可意境不生貪,於不可意境不生厭逆」 — toward pleasant objects, greed does not arise; toward unpleasant objects, aversion does not arise. And 「遠離法慳」 — free from stinginess about the dharma. These are not vague ideals; they are the observable marks.
8. 重要的澄清:解脫不是「成為新的」
The 瑜伽師地論 makes an often-overlooked point: 「解脫非另有一後來新生的清淨意生,而是就其本無染污說為解脫」 — liberation is not a brand-new pure mind that comes into being later; it is that the mind was never truly defiled in the first place, and the realization is the recognition of that.
This is also why 無餘依解脫 (liberation without remainder) 「唯是自內所證」 — can only be known internally; cannot be debated with categories like existence/non-existence, identity/difference. 煩惱解脫 isn't about *becoming* something you were not. It is about *recognizing* what was always the case.
二、生活裡的走查
Let's walk through one day, mapping each classical component to what is actually felt.
早班通勤 (morning commute)
The alarm goes off. You fumble for the phone before your eyes are fully open. The 雜集論 calls this 拘礙 (confinement) — body and possessions as the cage. You haven't yet differentiated from the phone; the attachment-WE, before any thought, is already small-cage.
On the subway, you scroll. The 暴流 (flood) is in full force: feed of news, videos, ads, the mind swept along. The 雜集論 specifies that 暴流 is driven by 無明顛倒 — and even your "just browsing" is going somewhere. You are not choosing; the flood is choosing.
The train is delayed. Heat rises in the chest. The 瑜伽師地論 would call this 熱 (heat) — the three poisons burning body and mind. Notice: the anger is not a thought. It is somatic. The chest tightens, the jaw locks, the shoulders rise. The cutting here, if any, is 纏斷 — addressing the manifest. But if you don't mind the 隨眠 underneath (the underlying pattern of "I should not be delayed; the world should fit my schedule"), the next delay will flare again.
You arrive at work slightly irritated. The 惱 (distress) of 雜集論 is here: 於可樂事愛著變壞增愁嘆 — the pleasant thing (smooth commute) you loved has changed, and the lament rises. Even mild resentment is 惱.
工作中 (workday)
A colleague sends an email that reads as curt. Mind jumps to 諍 (conflict) — picking up weapons, joining fight. Soon you are composing a reply in your head, your retaliation sharpening with each sentence. This is 軛 (yoke) too — the obligation of email, the harness that keeps you yoked to the response-cycle. You cannot NOT respond; the yoke is the structure.
The two cutting strategies become relevant here: - 從相應說斷 — if you bring the right mental factors to the moment (such as 慈/loving-kindness, or simply the recollection that this email is one of 200 today), the 諍 has no rising-mind to ride. - 從所緣說斷 — if you change the OBJECT (don't reread the email six times, don't simulate the colleague's tone in your head), the 諍 has no ground.
Both are valid. The 瑜伽師地論 is explicit that they describe the same cutting from two directions.
By lunch, the manifest 纏 is over. But the 隨眠 hasn't moved. Watch: when the SAME kind of email arrives tomorrow, the SAME pattern will rise. 隨眠斷 would be the work of making the pattern itself not arise, regardless of the object. That is the deeper, more demanding work, and the test of whether your 煩惱解脫 is real.
家庭 (family)
In the evening, your child asks for the fifth time. The 瑜伽師地論's 「欲恚害尋思」(desire-ill-will-harm thoughts) shows up clearly: 欲尋 (the search for what I want), 恚尋 (the search for what to be angry about), 害尋 (the search for what to harm). The mind, in its idle moments, is not doing nothing — it is searching. The afflictions are actively hunting. The 隨眠 is not a passive background; it is a predator.
Liberation here is not "still it" — it is recognize the hunting as hunting. The 解脫隨煩惱 section points to the right-mindfulness response: 「於可意境不生貪,於不可意境不生厭逆」 — doesn't form greed for the pleasant, doesn't form aversion for the unpleasant. The child's fifth request is neither a prize to be grasped nor a punishment to be resented. It is a request. When the mind is well, it responds to the request.
深夜 (late night)
You sit alone. The day is quiet. The manifest 纏 are over. But now the 隨眠 makes its presence felt differently: the regret, the rehearsal, the future-projection. 心解脫's four fruits offer a diagnostic:
- 貪瞋縛解脫 — is the greed-bond released? Or does the loop of "I should have done better" still pull? - 欲貪滅斷出離 — has desire-greed exited? Or is the late-night snack-craving (which is symbolic, not literal) still pulling? - 九結離繫 — are the nine knots releasing? The 雜集論's three gates are a beginning: 暴流 (still streaming?), 軛 (still yoked?), 取 (still grasping the future-self?). - 生等諸苦解脫 — and the suffering? This is the result-side, the fruit that follows from the first three.
The 瑜伽師地論's behavioral signature is here too: at 11 PM, when mind is still, it should be 住於捨, 正念正知 — settled in equanimity, with right mindfulness and right knowledge. If you are exhausted and numb, that is not it. If you are thrilled and inspired, that is not it either. The signature is a specific quality: untroubled responsiveness.
翻譯錯誤的重點 (where modern minds commonly mis-map)
Before moving on, let me flag the most common mis-mappings:
1. Re-mapping 隨眠 to "subconscious" — tempting because the 隨眠 IS underneath. But 隨眠 is not a content; it is a tendency. It does not store your childhood. It predisposes to certain kinds of arising. 2. Re-mapping 纏 to "behavior" — 纏 is not what you DO; it is the active coloring of mind. You can have 纏 with no external action. 3. Re-mapping 暴流 to "addiction" — addiction is one of the things 暴流 can produce, but 暴流 is a broader drift-movement. The mind at 3 AM, unable to stop re-checking, is also 暴流. 4. Re-mapping 轉依 to "becoming a better person" — 轉依 is structural transformation of the basis, not character improvement. The basis is the support on which experience stands.
三、當代人為什麼需要它
1. 設計過的暴流 (designed floods)
The contemporary 暴流 is highly engineered. Social media, news feeds, recommendation algorithms — these are not natural streams; they are 暴流 with capital. The 雜集論's line — 「無明顛倒推求解脫及方便」, even the very pursuit of liberation and its methods can flow along the flood — has a specific contemporary edge: the meditation app itself can become a feed. The wellness industry can become a new form of attachment. The classical diagnostic — that the mind is structurally swept — is more visible today than at any prior time.
2. 隨眠的肥沃土壤 (fertile soil for latent afflictions)
Modern life offers consistent watering for the 隨眠. Every phone-checked out of anxiety, every nighttime rumination, every re-read of a curt email and rehearsed reply — the pattern is reinforced. Unlike a few decades ago, the 隨眠 rarely rests. This is why 隨眠斷 work is harder, not easier, today. The conditions of life are unusually hospitable to the very patterns 煩惱解脫 aims to cut.
3. 五階段的稀少 (the rarity of the five-stage process)
The 瑜伽師地論 begins with 正定 (right concentration). But the contemporary mind rarely settles. The first step — gathering the mind — has become a luxury. The result is that the other four stages (如實知 → 厭患 → 離染 → 解脫) become harder to even aim for, because the foundation is unstable. Many contemporary seekers try to engage 厭患 or 離染 without the foundation, and the result is a kind of forced-meditative-disenchantment that doesn't last. The training in 正定 is not optional decoration; it is the doorway.
4. 兩種解脫的混淆 (confusing the two liberations)
Contemporary spirituality often pursues 苦解脫 (ease of suffering) without the underlying 煩惱解脫 (cutting the fetters). The result is real relief that doesn't last, because the fetters are still in place. The classical pairing is a diagnosis: relaxation without structural change is not liberation. Stress management, emotional regulation, anxiety reduction — these may be 苦解脫 of a sort, but they are not 煩惱解脫. The distinction protects seekers from settling for shallow good.
5. 應斷/不應斷, 世間/出世間 (what to cut, what to grow)
The materials note that 煩惱解脫 establishes the framework for 「應斷、不應斷;世間、出世間」 — what should be cut and what should not; what is worldly and what is beyond-worldly. In contemporary life, this framework is critical: there are affliction-equivalents that should be cut (greedy cleverness, hateful righteousness, deluded certainty) and capacities that should be cultivated (compassion, discernment, presence). Without the framework, one risks cutting what should grow and growing what should be cut.
6. 轉依的當代對照 (a contemporary analogy, with limits)
The 雜集論's term 轉依 (transformation of basis) is unusually relevant today. Much of contemporary self-help is about behavioral change (different actions). 轉依 is about a different kind of change — the basis itself. In contemporary cognitive vocabulary, this might be loosely compared to reconsolidation — the brain's process of updating emotional memories when they are reactivated in a new context — but the comparison is partial. 轉依 is NOT just memory-update; it is the substrate on which the mind rides being changed. The classical claim is stronger than any cognitive science can presently confirm. We can note the similarity, but we cannot say neuroscience has verified 轉依. What we can say is that the classical diagnosis — that behavior change without basis change is fragile — is well-supported by contemporary psychology of habits, while the 轉依 claim itself remains a doctrinal affirmation.
四、常見誤讀與澄清
1. 「煩惱解脫 = 永遠沒有煩惱」
誤讀: 煩惱解脫 = no more afflictions ever arising.
澄清: The classical text is precise. 煩惱解脫 is the liberation THAT COMES FROM cutting 煩惱. The achievement is the cutting, not the eternal absence. The 瑜伽師地論 signs the achievement behaviorally: facing adorable, hatable, deludable objects, greed/hate/delusion no longer arise. That is the signature, not the metaphysical claim of permanent absence. The mind that is "without afflictions" all the time may not be a mind at all.
2. 「煩惱解脫 = 苦解脫」
誤讀: Liberation from the fetters is the same as freedom from suffering.
澄清: The 雜集論 explicitly distinguishes them. 煩惱解脫 is 永斷相 (the aspect of permanent cutting); 苦解脫 is 作證相 (the aspect of direct realization). The first is the CUT, the second is the FRUIT of the cut. The first is 轉依 (transformation of basis); the second is 離繫 (untying). A practitioner can have one without the other at least partially. The contemporary mind mistakes one for the other and ends up either seeking only relief (missing the structural work) or seeking only structural change (missing the relief).
3. 「解脫就是成為一個清淨的新人」
誤讀: After liberation, the mind is new, freshly born, pure.
澄清: The 瑜伽師地論 explicitly says: 解脫 is not a later-born pure mind; it is recognized that the mind was never defiled to begin with. This is a subtle and deep point. The path is not toward a new state but toward the recognition of what was always the case. This is also why 無餘依 「唯是自內所證」 — cannot be debated with existence/non-existence, identity/difference categories. It is not a third thing.
4. 「隨眠 = 潛意識」
誤讀: The 隨眠 (latent afflictions) are the same as the unconscious.
澄清: 隨眠 is a tendency, not a content. It is not a stored memory or a hidden desire. It is a structural predisposition to arise in certain ways. The contemporary popular psychology of "the subconscious" is a different conceptual system. Similar in some respects (both are below the surface), divergent in others (the unconscious is imagined as a storage place; 隨眠 is imagined as a tendency-conditioning). When we encounter the term 隨眠, we should drop the unconscious-equivalence and let it mean "tendency that conditions how mind arises."
5. 「纏斷就夠了」
誤讀: Cutting the manifest is enough.
澄清: The 瑜伽師地論 is explicit: 纏斷 is partial. 隨眠斷 is the deeper work. 離繫斷 = 隨眠斷. The classical achievement is the cutting of the ROOT, not just the branch. Contemporary practitioners often stop at 纏斷 — they manage the flare-ups without uprooting the pattern. This is real progress, but it is not 煩惱解脫 in the full classical sense. The 隨眠斷 is what makes the liberation robust against repeated exposure to the same objects.
6. 「解脫 = 什麼都不感覺」
誤讀: The liberated mind is detached, flat, unfeeling.
澄清: The behavioral signature is 住於捨 (dwelling in equanimity), not in numbness. 捨 is a specific quality — it is the absence of being tossed by response, not the absence of response. The liberated eye sees color; the liberated ear hears sound; the mind is not catapulted into craving or aversion. The 瑜伽師地論's description 「皆不喜不憂」 is the absence of the swings, not the absence of mind. A flat, cold mind is not the achievement of 煩惱解脫; it is a different kind of disturbance.
7. 「從相應說斷 vs 從所緣說斷 — 哪個才是對的?」
誤讀: One of the two cutting methods is the true one.
澄清: The text says they are both valid descriptions of the same cutting. 從相應說斷 emphasizes the rise of antidote-factors; 從所緣說斷 emphasizes the changing of the object-support. A practitioner might engage one more than the other at different times. The classical caution is against picking one AS the only method. The integration of the two is closer to the full picture.
8. 「五階段會依次通過」
誤讀: 修行 follows the five stages one-by-one with clear markers.
澄清: The 瑜伽師地論's stages are a 軌則 (trajectory), not a single linear path. The mind cycles, re-enters, sometimes slips back to 熱 after progressing to 厭患. The text warns explicitly: even a 聖弟子 placed in 善法 or 內寂止 finds the mind re-arising greed, hatred, delusion, restlessness, and lack of calm. The stages are aspirational and iterative, not a one-time staircase. The path is more like a spiral than a ladder.
9. 「無餘依解脫是比煩惱解脫更高級的解脫」
誤讀: Once you have 煩惱解脫, you then get the higher 無餘依 liberation.
澄清: The 瑜伽師地論 says: 煩惱解脫 runs through BOTH 有餘依 (liberation with remainder) and 無餘依 (liberation without remainder). They are not stages; they are dimensions. 有餘依 is the liberation while the body remains; 無餘依 is the liberation at the body's end. The text insists 無餘依 is 「唯是自內所證」 — only known internally, cannot be debated. The mistake is to imagine 無餘依 as a "bigger" liberation; it is the same liberation seen at a different boundary.
10. 「見斷 vs 修斷 — 走哪一條?」
誤讀: A practitioner must choose one path: seeing or cultivation.
澄清: The 瑜伽師地論 states: 見道所斷煩惱由現觀智而頓斷 (path-of-seeing cuts by sudden realization); 修道所斷煩惱則須數數修道、漸次斷除 (path-of-cultivation cuts by repeated gradual practice). The first is the gross view-level cut; the second is the subtle pattern-level mop-up. BOTH are required for full 煩惱解脫. The view-only realization without the cultivation is fragile; the cultivation without the view is partial. The classical path is the integration.
11. 「煩惱解脫的目的是成為好人」
誤讀: Liberation is fundamentally about moral improvement.
澄清: The classical text is rarely framed in moral vocabulary. 煩惱解脫 is framed as structural liberation of the binding, not as ethical achievement. The four 心解脫果 include behavior-signatures (no greed toward pleasant, no aversion toward unpleasant, no stinginess about dharma) — but these are CORRELATES of the structural change, not its definition. A mind can be "good" in behavior while still 隨眠 is fully active. The frame is not morality; it is the structure of how mind arises.
12. 「有餘依解脫是部分的、暫時的」
誤讀: 有餘依 (liberation with remainder) is incomplete or provisional.
澄清: The 雜集論 distinguishes 煩惱解脫 into TWO aspects — 永斷相 (permanent cessation) and 作證相 (realization). 有餘依 is the state in which the cutting has happened but the body remains; 無餘依 is the state at the body's end. The cutting itself is identical in both. The text warns that 無餘依's nature is 「唯是自內所證」 — and cannot be theorized about. The error is to read 有餘依 as inherently less valid; the cutting is the same; only the living-body envelope differs.
