There is a moment in Buddhist practice that rarely gets a clean name in everyday speech: the moment one begins to suspect that not only is there no fixed "self" inhabiting experience, but the *things themselves* — the categories, the labels, the things one took to be obviously there — were never the kind of entities one took them to be. This is the terrain of 法無我智 (dharma-nairātmya-jñāna), the wisdom by which a bodhisattva, as-it-is (如實), knows that all dharmas are of a nature that exceeds any conceptual designation, and that no dharma, nor any class of dharma, can ultimately be the object of conceptual discrimination. It is the wisdom that severs 法我執 (dharma-ātma-graha) — the deep, almost invisible attachment to phenomena as having self-nature — and is paired with 人無我智 (pudgala-nairātmya-jñāna), the wisdom that severs 人我執 (pudgala-ātma-graha), the belief in a self of persons.
The 《瑜伽師地論》(Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra) places this wisdom at an unusually high station: 「一切已得菩提、當得、今得,皆依彼智,除此更無若劣若勝」 — "All enlightenment that has been attained, that will be attained, that is now attained, depends on that wisdom; besides it there is nothing inferior or superior". That is a strong claim. The 《攝大乘論釋》 (Wuxing commentary on the Mahāyāna-saṃgraha) reinforces it from a different angle: 「非於一切所知境,不斷所執法分別,而能證得一切智,是故宣說法無我」 — "Without severing the discrimination of how dharmas are grasped on the objects of knowledge, one cannot attain omniscience; therefore the dharma-non-self is taught". These two texts, both from the Yogācāra tradition, treat 法無我智 as the structural ground of bodhi itself.
What follows is in four movements. First, what the sources actually say, layer by layer, so the technical vocabulary doesn't get flattened into "everything is empty, who cares." Second, a walk through contemporary life — commute, phone, office, intimacy, parenting — showing where each layer applies, and where it is most often mis-mapped. Third, why this particular wisdom matters to a contemporary reader who already intuits that the self is constructed. Fourth, the most common misreadings, and how to correct them.
一、法無我智在说什么
1.1 它在解脱道中的位置——与人無我智并列的双轨
In Mahāyāna analysis, the bodhisattva path requires the cutting of *two* kinds of self-grasping, not one. 人我執 is the conviction that "I am" a self-contained person who possesses experiences, makes choices, persists through change, and will be judged. 法我執 is the deeper, almost invisible conviction that the *things themselves* — emotions, persons, situations, even concepts and doctrines — exist the way their labels suggest: as bounded entities with intrinsic natures, fixed essences, definable boundaries.
Most contemporary dharma talk stops at 人無我. This is not wrong, but it leaves the second spearhead of the analysis intact. 法無我智 targets that second spearhead. The 《瑜伽師地論》 explicitly pairs the two wisdoms and treats both as 「菩提分之根本所依」 — the fundamental reliance of all factors of bodhi. They are not sequential in a simple way; they are interlocking. You cannot fully clear 人我執 without engaging 法我執, and vice versa.
A useful analogy that should not be pushed too far: in predictive-processing accounts of cognition, the brain constructs a model of "self" and a model of "world," and the seam between them is where most distress arises. Buddhist analysis goes further: not only is the self-model constructed, but the world-model is also constructed through the same conceptual-designating activity (分別 / 戲論) that produces the self-model. 法無我智 is the wisdom that sees through the world-model at its root.
Each clause here does specific work and should not be paraphrased away.
- 離言自性 (nature beyond words) — "離" means away from, beyond; "言" is verbal designation, conceptual name-and-form. Every dharma has a *nature* (自性), but that nature is not capturable by language. Words point; they do not touch. This is not a claim that reality is inexpressible *mysteriously*. It is a precise claim: the way a thing is, in itself, exceeds every conceptual designation applied to it. The redness of red, the soreness of a sore shoulder, the awkwardness of an awkward silence — none of these is reducible to the label. 法無我智 directly knows this word-defying nature, "as-it-is," without slipping into the comforting fantasy that some higher-order word will finally capture it.
- 無少法及少品類可起分別 (no dharma and no category of dharma can be discriminated) — This is the strong claim, and it is easy to mis-hear. The text does not say "nothing exists." It says: of *all* dharmas, *none* — and of *all categories* under which dharmas are subsumed, *none* — can become the ultimate object of *conceptual discrimination* (分別). Discrimination here is the dualistic activity of "this is X, not Y, and so-and-so." Every such discrimination is provisional, functional, and finally unable to lay hold of the nature of its object. The double structure — "無少法 *及* 少品類" — is important. 法無我智 doesn't just deny the existence of individual things; it denies that the *kinds* we slot them into (work/leisure, self/other, mine/not-mine, sacred/profane, signal/noise) carve reality at its joints.
- 唯取其事,唯取真如 (only take its matter, only take its suchness) — Once the proliferation of discrimination is exhausted, what remains is *事* (the simple matter / the thing-as-it-functions) and *真如* (suchness, true-suchness). The text then adds: but one does not even proliferate "this is only matter" or "this is only suchness" — 「不生『此是唯事、是唯真如』之戲論,但行於義」. Even the most refined reifications — "I see the suchness," "I take only the matter" — are themselves forms of 法我執 if clung to. The wisdom operates *within* the matter and suchness, not as a stance above them.
- 平等見、平等心、最勝捨 (equal seeing, equal mind, supreme relinquishment) — The same passage describes the experiential character of this wisdom: equality of seeing across all objects; equality of mind; a "supreme relinquishment" that doesn't prefer one dharma over another. In saṃsāric suffering of the most extreme kind, 「不退轉」 — there is no backsliding. This is striking: the wisdom is described not as a cold metaphysical insight but as something that holds under conditions that break most other attainments.
1.3 觀行方法:貫穿因性與貫穿到邊際空性
How is the wisdom actually operated? The 《瑜伽師地論》 uses a precise pair of technical terms — 「貫穿因性」 (penetrative causal nature) and 「貫穿到邊際空性」 (penetrative empty-nature reaching to the boundary). These are not casual phrases; they structure the entire observational practice.
貫穿因性 has two aspects:
- *觀察能取所顯* — observing that which the *grasper* (能取) reveals. The wisdom turns back on itself. The practitioner sees that this very 法無我智 「遠離言說自性、遠離彼分別、應捨相、有剎那」 — is itself word-defying, itself remote from discrimination, itself to-be-relinquished-as-image, itself momentary. The wisdom is not a permanent possession or a fixed state. It is a process, with causes, with arising and ceasing.
- *彼如實通達所顯* — by proper thinking (如理作意) about both the grasped (所取) and the grasper (能取) as their respective causes, an *internally-realized decisive wisdom* (內證決定智) arises in each case. This decisive wisdom is decisive precisely because it does not rest on conceptual discrimination; it is *realized* within.
貫穿到邊際空性 has one aspect:
- The wisdom manifests as it truly is. Its appearance is described by a deliberately paradoxical phrase: 「顯現業、煩惱相似相故」 — it shows a "similar appearance" (相似相) to karma and afflictions. This is a delicate teaching. The wisdom is *not* karma, *not* affliction; but its surface appearance — arising, momentary, an object that can be observed — resembles them. Why? Because this prevents the practitioner from making the wisdom itself into a new 法我 — a permanent self-thing — and from making its realization into an eternal attainment. The wisdom is 「不可言說、離言說自性、不執著、有剎那故」 — inexpressible, of word-defying nature, unattached, momentary.
The deep point of the method is that the wisdom that sees through 法我執 does not become a new object to be possessed. The seeing itself turns back on itself; the tool sees that it is a tool and is not clung to as a result.
1.4 從法住智到決定遍智:遍智的建立與隨眠之斷
The 《瑜伽師地論》 adds a further structural pair: 法住智 (dharmasthiti-jñāna, "wisdom that abides in dharmas") and 決定遍智 (niṣcaya-jñāna, "decisive comprehensive knowledge"). These mark the transition from initial settling-into-dharmas to full decisive comprehension.
- 法住智 is the earlier-stage wisdom: dharmas are known in their suchness, abided in, observed in their characteristic marks. The practitioner is at home with dharmas-as-they-function.
- 決定遍智 is the later, fully decisive wisdom: not merely abiding in dharmas, but decisively knowing, with comprehensive coverage, that there is no "I" or "mine" or "interlocking belonging" among them. The text: 「諸行都無有我,無有我所,亦無有餘互相繫屬」 — "in all formations there is no I, no mine, no mutual binding-and-belonging". This is comprehensive not in the sense of "lots of facts covered" but in the sense of "no corner of experience remains in which a self of dharmas can be located."
The same passage structures the practice threefold: 內遍智 (comprehensive knowledge of the inner), 外遍智 (comprehensive knowledge of the outer), 內外遍智 (comprehensive knowledge of inner and outer together), with the severing of latent tendencies (隨眠) parallel to each. The inner / outer distinction here is not a metaphysics of inside-vs-outside; it is a contour of practice: first one's own stream of experience, then the streams of others, then the inseparability of the two.
The crucial practical line: 「由法住智得決定遍智,數習此故捨相應隨眠,得畢竟斷」 — "From the wisdom that abides in dharmas, decisive comprehensive knowledge is attained; by repeated cultivation, the corresponding latent tendencies are relinquished, and ultimate severance occurs". Severance is not a single insight; it is the repeated operation of the wisdom until the corresponding seeds of grasping are no longer activated. Note the verb 「捨」 — relinquish, not destroy. The seeds are not annihilated; they are seen through, again and again, until they do not arise.
1.5 究竟果證:盡智、心慧解脫、無學位的依處
The fruit of 法無我智, fully matured, is described in the same treatise as 「盡智 (kṣaya-jñāna, knowledge of exhaustion)」 — knowledge that suffering and its origins are exhausted. Three features mark this fruit, and they are worth quoting carefully:
- 「觀唯有法,都無有我」 — "One observes that there are only dharmas, and no 'I' anywhere." This is not a stance; it is the settled seeing. - 「於一切有深心厭捨,不起『我當有、我當無』之加行」 — "Deep relinquishment of all forms of existence; no longer arises the impulse 'I shall be / I shall not be.'" Even the wish to have or not have a self is given up. - 「於諸煩惱斷滅諦中以寂靜行攀緣而住,暫時失念亦不能動」 — "One abides by the still-going (寂靜行) on the truth of the cutting-off of afflictions; even momentary loss of mindfulness cannot move one".
The last clause is striking in its realism. The fruit does not eliminate momentary forgetfulness — those still occur. What it eliminates is the *moving* of one's ground by forgetfulness. One returns to the seeing without effort; the seeing does not depend on continuous attention. This is paired with 「心、慧解脫不為忘念陵雜」 — "the liberation of mind and wisdom is not encroached upon by forgetfulness" — and with the establishment of the *āśaikṣa* (無學) ground as 「諦依處、捨依處、善修道、寂依處之第一」 — the first, foremost reliance on truth, on relinquishment, on the well-cultivated path, on stillness.
This is the eventual endpoint of the path that 法無我智 initiates. It is not reached in a flash; the bodhisattva-path traverses ten stages (十地) of progressive deepening.
1.6 十地漸證:每一地都在深入法無我智的某一相
The 《攝大乘論釋 (無性釋)》 frames the entire ten-bhūmi structure as a progressive entry into 法無我智: 「十無明十所治障為障而住,為斷此障修十相智,由十相智得入十地法無我智分位名地」. Each bhūmi is named for the *aspect* (相) of 法無我智 being penetrated at that stage. The progression up through the eighth bhūmi runs:
- 初地 (First) — 遍行義: the *all-pervasive* aspect. Emptiness is known to pervade all dharmas; no dharma is excluded from it; and yet 「無有少法而非是空」 — there is no dharma that is *not* empty. This counter-intuitive formulation is important: the claim is not that "emptiness is everywhere" as a magical substance, but that no dharma escapes the empty nature. - 二地 (Second) — 最勝義: the *most-excellent* aspect. Emptiness is known to be supremely excellent among all dharmas, not as a competitor to them but as their true nature. - 三地 (Third) — 勝流義: the *excellent-stream* aspect. Because the teachings that stream forth from this emptiness are themselves most excellent, the bodhisattva is willing to give up body and life for the well-spoken dharma. - 四地 (Fourth) — 無攝受義: the *non-apprehension* aspect. No dharma is grasped as "self-possessed" or "other-possessed"; the categories of "mine / not-mine" no longer bind. - 五地 (Fifth) — 相續無差別義: the *non-difference-of-continuity* aspect. The empty nature is not something that comes and goes; it is not differentiable the way successive forms and feelings are. - 六地 (Sixth) — 無雜染清淨義: the *non-defiled-non-purified* aspect. The empty nature was never defiled; it does not become purified. Both defilement and purification are seen as superimpositions. - 七地 (Seventh) — 種種法無差別義: the *non-difference-among-various-dharmas* aspect. Across diverse sūtras and diverse dharmas, the empty nature is not differentiable; the differences are functions of provisional teaching, not of ultimate nature. - 八地 (Eighth) — 不增不減義: the *non-increase-non-decrease* aspect. Because no dharma is added from outside and no dharma is destroyed from within, the empty nature is intrinsically unchanging. The eighth bhūmi is also marked by two liberations: 相自在 (freedom of characteristics) and 土自在 (freedom of land/field), i.e., spontaneous mastery over all manifest forms and all pure-fields, without grasping.
The point of this progression is not chronology for its own sake; it is that 法無我智 has many aspects, and a real bodhisattva penetrates them in order, each stage deepening the prior, each finding a more subtle form of 法我執 to release.
1.7 歸結偈:「應知一切法,本性無分別」
The 《攝大乘論釋 (無性釋)》 closes with a four-line verse that gathers the whole teaching into one breath:
應知一切法,本性無分別, 所分別無故,無分別智無。
"One should know that all dharmas, by their own nature, are without discrimination. Since the discriminated dharmas do not exist, the discriminating wisdom is also not apprehendable as a thing".
This verse is doing something precise. It is not saying "there is no wisdom" or "practice is useless." It is saying: when you truly see that the dharmas you discriminated never had the boundaries you imputed, then the wisdom that *was* discriminating them also cannot be held as an object — not because it didn't occur, but because it cannot be captured as a "thing-that-was-wisdom." This is the final sweep of 法無我智: it does not exempt itself.
二、生活里的走查
Now to bring this into the texture of contemporary life. The classical components above — 離言自性, 無少法及少品類可起分別, 唯取真如, 法住智, 決定遍智, 內遍智 / 外遍智 / 內外遍智, 隨眠之斷, 貫穿因性, 邊際空性, 相似相, 三漏解脫, 盡智, 十地分位, 本性無分別 — are technical terms, but they map onto specific places in the way modern people actually live. I'll walk through several scenes, mapping each to the relevant components, and marking the most common mis-mapping at each step.
2.1 場景一:通勤路上與「我是誰」這個分類
It is Monday morning. You are on the train. A colleague asks, "What do you do?" and you reflexively answer "I'm a designer" / "I'm a manager" / "I'm in finance." The category slots you into a kind. Throughout the day, the category will quietly shape what you attend to, what you dismiss, what you take seriously.
Where 法無我智 applies here is not the obvious place. The obvious place is "I am not really a designer" — that would be a flat denial of role, a kind of 人無我 cliché. The actual application is subtler: the *category* "designer" — the word-as-defining-the-essence — is itself a 品類 (class of dharma) under which the activity of designing has been subsumed. 法無我智 sees that 「無少品類可起分別」: no category, including professional identity-categories, can finally capture the nature of what you are doing. You are not "essentially" a designer; you are also not "essentially" anything else; the essence was never there to be captured.
This is the 無少法及少品類可起分別 component in operation. The mis-mapping almost everyone makes is to think 法無我智 means "I should drop my role identity" — which is just substituting one category ("no-role") for another ("role"). What the wisdom sees is that role-categories are functional designations (假名), useful for many purposes, but unable to lay hold of what you actually are in any given moment. The professional category does not need to be destroyed; it needs to be *seen through* — known as a designation that does not reach the nature of what it designates.
2.2 場景二:刷手機時與「事實/觀點」的分類
You are scrolling. Every few seconds you slot content into bins: *this is a fact, this is an opinion, this is a news report, this is a sponsored post, this is satire, this is from a friend, this is from an enemy.* The分类 machinery is running constantly, often invisibly.
This is where 內遍智 / 外遍智 / 內外遍智 and 法住智 → 決定遍智 are useful. 法住智 is the first operation: dwell in the content as it functions — observe the image, the headline, the rhythm of the scroll, the slight tension in your chest. Then 決定遍智 is the deeper operation: decisively know that the *categories* under which you have placed the content (fact/opinion, friend/enemy, signal/noise) do not carve the content at its joints. They are useful functional designations, but they have no intrinsic self-nature; they do not capture what the content is in its 離言自性.
The mis-mapping here is the internet-era version of the most ancient error: thinking that if the categories are not ultimately real, then "everything is just opinion" or "nothing is true." This is the converse error. 法無我智 does not collapse all categories into one undifferentiated mush. It sees categories as designations that function well within their proper range (a fact-check is a fact-check; satire is satire), while recognizing that none of them reaches the word-defying nature of what they sort. To know that "fact" is a designation is not to be unable to tell fact from fiction; it is to be able to tell fact from fiction *without making "fact" into a self-existing essence.*
2.3 場景三:加班深夜與「這件事的本質」
It is 11:47 p.m. You are staring at a project that has gone sideways. There is a strong pull to ask "what is this *really*?" — what is the essence of the project, what is the essence of the failure, what is the essence of my role in it. You want to find the "real thing" underneath appearances.
This is precisely the territory of 唯取真如 / 唯取其事. The classical text: 「唯取其事,唯取真如」. The wisdom does take *the matter* (事) and *suchness* (真如). But it does not proliferate "this is the essence" or "I have found the underlying thing." 法無我智 sees that the very asking 「什麼是這件事的本質」 is already an act of 法我執 — the assumption that there is an essence to be found, that the project has a self-nature that, if uncovered, would resolve everything.
What 法無我智 does instead is: stop seeking the essence. Take the matter as it functions, here, in this moment — the unread emails, the slipped deadline, the colleague's face in the meeting, the fact that your shoulders are climbing toward your ears. Take these as the matter. The suchness is in them, not behind them. The mis-mapping is the metaphysical one: 真如 is treated as a hidden substrate, a thing-in-itself to be discovered. The text explicitly forbids this: 「不生『此是唯事、是唯真如』之戲論」 — do not even proliferate "this is just the matter, this is just suchness". The wisdom is operational, not propositional.
2.4 場景四:親密關係中與「他就是那種人」的分類
You have been with your partner for years. There is a category you have built — "he is the avoidant type," "she is the anxious one," "he doesn't do emotions." The category is not random; it captures real patterns. But the category has also hardened: every new behavior is being routed through it, every disagreement is being resolved (or unresolved) by it.
This is a perfect demonstration of 法我執 at the level of personality-typology, and 法無我智's 「無少品類可起分別」 is exactly the right intervention — but carefully. The mis-mapping almost everyone makes is to swing to the opposite: "I shouldn't categorize him at all." This would be a new category — "no-categorizing" — and would damage the relationship further. What 法無我智 actually does is more precise: see that the *category* is a designation that has been assigned to a person, and that the assignment does not capture the 離言自性 (word-defying nature) of who he actually is in this moment. The category can be used (with care) for practical coordination; it cannot be used as a final essence. The person you are actually with, here, tonight, is not the type. The type is a model; the model is useful; the model is not the person.
This is 內遍智 / 外遍智 / 內外遍智 again, but with a relational contour: knowing your own categories (內遍智), knowing the other's actual suchness (外遍智), and knowing the inseparability of these two — you do not see the other without your categorizing apparatus, and you do not see your apparatus without the other's presence (內外遍智).
2.5 場景五:育兒中與「敏感期」「氣質」的分類
Your child is going through "a phase." The developmental-psychology literature has a name for it. The name is useful — it helps you respond appropriately, it reassures you that this is normal, it locates the behavior in a larger arc. But the name has also started to define the child: "she's in her sensitive period," "he's the shy one," "she's the strong-willed one."
法無我智's 「無少法及少品類可起分別」 is again the relevant component — but, again, the mis-mapping is the same: swinging to "no labels at all" is itself a label, and an unhelpful one. The actual operation of the wisdom is to use the developmental categories as functional designations (they do point to real regularities) while not mistaking them for the 離言自性 of the child. The child is *not* "the shy one" in any essential way; the child is a stream of becoming, with a shy tendency at present. The tendency can be supported or supported-into-flexibility; the tendency is not the child.
The classical 隨眠之斷 (severance of latent tendencies) is relevant here too, but on the parents' side, not the child's. The latent tendency to label-and-fix is, in many parents, deeply habituated. 法無我智's gradual severing of this tendency is exactly what allows the seeing to stay fresh. The seed is not destroyed by an act of will; it is repeatedly seen through until it no longer fires automatically.
2.6 場景六:自我修行中對「法無我」這個概念的執著
You have read about 法無我智. You try to practice it. You notice, with a small flush of pride, that you are no longer grasping at things. You now have a category — "I am someone practicing 法無我" — and the category is doing exactly the work 法無我智 was supposed to dismantle.
This is the precise danger that the 貫穿因性 / 觀察能取所顯 component addresses. The wisdom turns back on itself: this 法無我智 is itself 「遠離言說自性、遠離彼分別、應捨相、有剎那」 — word-defying, remote from discrimination, to-be-relinquished-as-image, momentary. The very insight into emptiness, if clung to, becomes a 法我. The practitioner who has glimpsed emptiness and made it into a possession has, classically, "spotted the snake, lifted it, and put it in their lap."
The mis-mapping here is among the most subtle and most damaging. It is the error of mistaking a glimpse (見) for completion (證), of converting an operational wisdom into an identity. The 《攝大乘論釋 (無性釋)》's closing verse names this directly: 「所分別無故,無分別智無」 — since the discriminated dharmas do not exist, the discriminating wisdom is also not an object to be had. The wisdom cannot be possessed because the wisdom is not a dharma to be possessed. It is the *operation* of seeing through. When the seeing-through stops, what remains is not a wise self; what remains is a situation that is met directly.
三、当代人为什么需要它
Why this particular wisdom for people alive now?
3.1 因為分類系統已經成為環境
A person in the contemporary information environment is sorted all day. Algorithms sort; institutions sort; tax-forms sort; HR software sorts; relationships sort; self-help literature sorts. The person is not in a neutral field; the person is in a sorting-machine, and the sorting is more granular, more constant, more invisible than at any previous time in history. To be a person now is to be, at every moment, slotted into 品類 (categories of dharma) by systems that are themselves optimized to make those slots feel essential.
人無我智 addresses the question "am I the categories?" 法無我智 addresses the deeper question "are the categories themselves, in their very nature, the kind of thing that can capture me (or anything)?" The first question is necessary; the second is more urgent in a hyper-categorized environment, because the categories have become so finely calibrated that they feel like the structure of reality itself.
3.2 因為語言已經變得可見為構造物
The contemporary person has, often without knowing it, become more sensitive to the constructed nature of language. We see AI-generated text and know it is statistical pattern-matching; we see memes mutate and know the form is not the content; we see political rhetoric work on us and we recognize the rhetoric-as-rhetoric. This is a cultural-historical opening. The classical teaching of 離言自性 — that all dharmas have a nature that words cannot reach — is more accessible now than at many previous times, because the constructedness of language has become common knowledge.
But accessibility is not realization. The danger is exactly the one the 《攝大乘論釋 (無性釋)》 closing verse names: the discriminating wisdom can be held as a thing. The contemporary person can easily turn "words don't reach reality" into a posture, a brand, an identity marker — "I am the one who sees through language" — and in so doing make language into an idol again, just a more sophisticated one. 法無我智's *self-turning*, its 貫穿因性, is the part of the teaching that addresses exactly this risk.
I should mark the limits of any neuroscience / AI analogy here. Predictive-processing accounts describe the brain as a prediction machine; LLM architecture shows that coherent language can be produced without anything resembling suchness-wisdom. These are useful analogies. They do *not* prove, and should not be claimed to prove, that 法無我智 is true. They suggest that human cognition is more constructed and more layered than naive introspection admits. The Dharma's analysis goes further: it is concerned not with the mechanism of construction but with the *seeing-through* of construction, which is a different kind of operation than any cognitive mechanism so far described. The contemporary opening is real; the technical vocabulary of "constructed mind" can introduce; only the practice itself delivers.
3.3 因為「自我」這個問題已經部分被解決了
There is a sense in which 人無我 has entered the cultural mainstream. Mindfulness, narrative-therapy, parts-work, IFS, certain strands of Buddhism-influenced psychology — all of these have, in different vocabularies, made the observation that the self is processual, not substantive. This is genuine progress. But it leaves a residue, and the residue is the terrain of 法無我智.
The residue is: if I am not a fixed self, then what *am* I in relation to? The implicit answer often given is: I am a process, in relation to other processes, in a field of experience. This is a more sophisticated story; it is still a story. The categories "process," "field," "experience" remain. The "I am a process" formulation can become a new identity, perhaps a more flattering one, but an identity nonetheless. 法無我智 addresses this residue by taking the next step: the dharmas that the process is *made of*, and the categories under which they are arranged, are also not ultimately what they appear. There is no "process" as a self-nature; there is the matter as it functions; there is no separate seer of the process.
This is why 《攝大乘論釋 (無性釋)》 can say 「非於一切所知境,不斷所執法分別,而能證得一切智」 — without severing the discrimination of how dharmas are grasped on the objects of knowledge, one cannot attain omniscience. The "omniscience" here (一切智) is not a database; it is the unobstructed knowing of dharmas-as-they-are, which cannot occur while the knower holds even the most refined categories as ultimately real.
3.4 因為不反芻的能力來自這裡
Modern mental-health language distinguishes rumination (反芻) from reflection. Rumination is the looping re-application of categories to experience; reflection is the willingness to let categories rest and look again. 法無我智 is, in part, a long-term training in non-rumination — not by suppressing thought, but by seeing that the categories one would ruminate with are, in their nature, unable to capture what one is ruminating about.
This is why 「無少法及少品類可起分別」 has a clinical, not just a doctrinal, relevance. A person caught in 「我是不是真的焦慮」「我是不是真的被愛」「這件事是不是真的發生了」 is caught precisely because they believe these categories can deliver a final yes-or-no. 法無我智, matured into 決定遍智, does not deliver a final yes-or-no; it sees that the asking assumes a category ("anxious," "loved," "real") that cannot finally bear the weight being placed on it. The result is not indifference; it is the end of the specific form of suffering that comes from demanding that categories perform a function they cannot perform.
四、常見誤讀與澄清
4.1 誤讀一:把法無我等同於「什麼都沒有」
This is the most common error, and it is the error the 《瑜伽師地論》 is preempting when it says 「唯取其事,唯取真如」 — only take the matter, only take the suchness. 法無我 is not the claim that dharmas do not exist; it is the claim that they do not exist *as the things their labels claim they are*. A chair is a chair, but the *essence-of-chair* that you imagine under the label "chair" was never there. The matter remains; the suchness of the chair remains; what is missing is the chair-as-self-nature.
The clarifying practice: 法無我智 does not delete dharmas; it deletes the *self-nature-ascribed-to-dharmas*. The chair you are sitting on is just as solid; your relationship to it is different.
4.2 誤讀二:只停在人無我智,不再深入
A second common misreading, particularly in contemporary dharma-talk, is the assumption that the path is essentially the deconstruction of self, and once that is done, the rest is icing. The classical sources explicitly contradict this. 法無我智 is named as the wisdom by which 一切智 is attained. Without severing 法我執, omniscience is impossible. The bodhisattva-path requires both. Stopping at 人無我智 is stopping halfway — and the half that remains undone is, by the classical analysis, the larger half.
4.3 誤讀三:把法無我智當成哲學命題
法無我智 is sometimes discussed as if it were a metaphysical thesis: "the claim that dharmas lack self-nature, defended by such-and-such arguments." But the 《瑜伽師地論》 repeatedly describes it as an *internally realized decisive wisdom* (內證決定智) — a knowing that arises from within through 如理作意 (proper thinking), not a thesis to be believed. The classic 「三相」 structure — 內遍智, 外遍智, 內外遍智 — is a contour of practice, not an argument structure. The wisdom is operational; treating it as propositional is treating it as the very kind of 法 (object-of-thought) it is supposed to see through.
4.4 誤讀四:把離言自性當成「不可言說的神祕」
The phrase 「離言自性」 is sometimes rendered as a kind of mystical ineffability: "reality is beyond words, and pointing to this is all we can do." The classical text does not support this. 離言自性 is a precise claim: words are conceptual designations (名言 / 戲論); dharmas have a nature that these designations cannot reach. This is not mystical; it is an analysis of what words do. The contemporary lesson: just as a map is not the territory (Borges's trope, the Zen tradition's, the cognitive-science tradition's), a concept is not the dharma it designates. This is a structural observation, not a mystery. To convert it into a mystery is to add a new category — "the mysterious beyond" — that is itself an object of discrimination, and the analysis would have to begin again.
4.5 誤讀五:把法無我智等同於「放下」或「不執著」
This is the popular psychologization of the teaching, and it loses almost everything. 「放下」 and 「不執著」 are descriptions of a *result*, not of the *wisdom*. 法無我智 is a *seeing*, not a *letting-go*. The difference matters. A practitioner who tries to "let go" without the seeing is attempting a volitional operation on an object; this is exactly the activity that 法我執 consists in. The seeing is not an act of will; it is the direct knowledge that the dharma has no self-nature to be clung to in the first place. 「捨」 in the classical text (e.g., 「數習此故捨相應隨眠」) is not "let go by effort"; it is "relinquish because seen". The relinquishing follows the seeing; it does not substitute for it.
4.6 誤讀六:忽略「數習」與「決定遍智」的功夫
The contemporary imagination often wants a single insight — a glimpse, an awakening, an aha-moment — and considers that the path. The classical text is insistent that this is not how the severing of 法我執 occurs. The decisive comprehensive knowledge (決定遍智) is not an instantaneous acquisition; it is the mature fruit of 法住智 (abiding-in-dharmas wisdom), reached through 「數習」 — repeated cultivation. The severing of latent tendencies (隨眠) happens 「數習此故」 — through repeated operation of this wisdom. The implication for a contemporary practitioner is unhurried: 法無我智 is not a state to be achieved but a seeing to be repeatedly returned to, in different conditions, on different objects, until it is not lost in the perturbations that still arise.
4.7 誤讀七:把法無我智與一切智/佛果分離開
The 《攝大乘論釋 (無性釋)》 is clear: 法無我智 is structurally tied to the attainment of 一切智. Treating it as a "philosophical insight" with no necessary relation to the bodhisattva-fruit is to treat it as the kind of object it is supposed to dissolve. The classical analysis refuses the modern bifurcation between "philosophy" and "practice" and between "wisdom" and "fruit." The wisdom is the operation; the operation is the practice; the practice is the gradual severing; the severing is the fruit. There is no separable "wisdom-content" that one can possess without the practice.
A final image. Imagine a person has spent years meditating on the self, and has come to see — clearly, repeatedly, in many conditions — that there is no fixed self coordinating experience. This is a real attainment; it corresponds to mature 人無我智. The person then walks through a market, sees a fruit, picks it up, smells it, bites in. The seeing of the fruit-as-fruit is clear. But under the fruit-as-fruit, there is still a tiny, almost invisible assumption: that the fruit has a self-nature — a fruit-essence — that the senses are tracking. The picking-up of the fruit, the smelling, the tasting, all carry this assumption. 法無我智 is the wisdom that sees this assumption too — sees that the fruit is the matter-as-it-functions, the suchness-in-this-moment, with no fruit-essence underneath the activity. The fruit is not diminished. The assumption is no longer operative. The picker picks up another fruit.
The 《心經》's 「照見五蘊皆空,度一切苦厄」 is the most concentrated classical statement of what 法無我智 does at the level of lived experience: when the five aggregates (色受想行識) are seen to be empty of self-nature, all suffering is crossed. That crossing is the activity of this wisdom — the same wisdom that sees through the self of persons and, deeper, the self of dharmas, and that does not exempt itself from its own operation. The path is long; the wisdoms are two; the seeing, when it is real, does not need to be defended.
